How to Set OBS to 30 FPS for a More Reliable YouTube Stream

Set OBS to 30 fps, choose a suitable output resolution and encoder bitrate, then test the connection and plan a local backup for long YouTube streams.

In OBS Studio, go to Settings > Video and set Common FPS Value to 30. Then confirm the output resolution and encoder settings separately. Choosing 30 fps is a frame-rate setting, not a nonstop-stream switch: reliability also depends on your encoder, computer, and upload connection.

Set OBS to 30 fps

  1. Open OBS Studio and select Settings.
  2. Select Video.
  3. Set Common FPS Value to 30. OBS advises matching this value to your intended output frame rate. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
  4. Check Output (Scaled) Resolution. This is the resolution OBS sends to YouTube. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace used to arrange your sources; it does not determine the stream’s output resolution by itself. Choose an output resolution your connection and system can sustain.
  5. Apply the settings, then test a stream using representative gameplay, movement, and audio before relying on it.

OBS labels or available encoder options can vary by operating system, hardware, and OBS version. If your interface differs, check the current OBS guide rather than assuming every setup has identical controls.

Choose 720p30 or 1080p30

Thirty frames per second is a reasonable target when you do not need 60 fps, but the best resolution depends on visual detail, content, upload capacity, and encoder performance. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection or computer will sustain the stream. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

Output YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate When to consider it
720p30 6 Mbps When a lower bitrate is important for a stable connection, or the content does not need the additional detail of 1080p.
1080p30 10 Mbps When the extra image detail matters and your connection and encoder can sustain the higher bitrate reliably.

YouTube’s recommendations do not establish one resolution as best for every channel. Lowering resolution can reduce the bitrate needed for a stable stream; test the choice with your actual content.

Set encoder output and leave upload headroom

In OBS’s streaming output or encoder settings, use settings compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Choose the bitrate for your selected codec and resolution using YouTube’s current encoder guidance.

YouTube recommends upload bandwidth sufficient for the total outgoing bitrate plus 20% headroom. Treat that as capacity to preserve above the stream bitrate, not as a promise that the connection will remain stable. Other network use or interruptions can still disrupt a stream. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing ahead and monitoring the stream.

Test and monitor a long stream

  • Test before going live. Use the intended resolution, bitrate, audio sources, and representative gameplay. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  • Watch stream health. Monitor YouTube Live Control Room during the broadcast and keep an eye on audio and video throughout operation.
  • Check your local recording. If you record a backup, verify that the file is being written and can be played. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive when stream capture matters.
  • Prepare a backup encoder if your setup supports one. Test the failover rather than assuming it will work during an outage.
  • Consider system load. OBS notes that 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps and recommends testing. Hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, but a new encoder or computer is not automatically necessary; consider one only if your existing setup cannot encode reliably or you need a higher-production setup. See OBS’s hardware encoding guidance.

What “nonstop” can and cannot mean on YouTube

Setting OBS to 30 fps does not guarantee an uninterrupted or indefinite broadcast. Network disruption can break a stream, and a computer or encoder can fail. YouTube also warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive; its DVR rewind feature may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If a complete copy matters, keep a local recording and plan around YouTube’s stated limits. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot an unstable 30 fps stream

Symptom What to check Practical next step
Stream health reports connection problems or the broadcast drops Whether upload capacity can sustain the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and whether other network activity is competing for capacity. Test again with less network use; if needed, reduce the output resolution or bitrate and test the revised setup. Network disruption can still occur.
Video stutters or the system struggles Whether the computer can encode the chosen resolution and frame rate reliably. Test at 30 fps and, if necessary, reduce resolution. Consider hardware encoding only if the existing system cannot encode reliably; consult the OBS hardware encoding guide for available options.
Video looks softer than expected Whether OBS’s Output (Scaled) Resolution is set to the intended YouTube ingest resolution. Check that setting separately from Base (Canvas) Resolution, then confirm the selected bitrate matches YouTube’s current guidance for the codec and resolution.
The stream is live but the archive is missing or incomplete Whether the stream exceeded 12 hours; YouTube warns such streams may not be captured as an archive. Keep and verify a local recording if archive completeness matters, and account for YouTube’s stream-length caveat when planning the broadcast.
Backup encoder does not take over as expected Whether the backup path is configured and has been tested. Test failover before relying on it during a live broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
