How to Stream H.265 Video to YouTube Live From a Remote Server

YouTube’s HLS guide explicitly supports HEVC, while its RTMP documentation conflicts. Here’s how to prepare a remote-server stream, choose settings, and test it.

For the clearest documented HEVC route, send H.265 to YouTube over HLS. YouTube’s HLS guide explicitly accepts HEVC, while its current encoder settings page and protocol comparison page conflict about HEVC over RTMP/RTMPS. HLS is segment-based and usually has higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC, so verify your exact ingest protocol in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on RTMPS.

Choose HLS or RTMPS before configuring the server

Consideration HLS RTMPS
HEVC documentation YouTube’s HLS guide explicitly lists HEVC. YouTube’s encoder settings page lists H.265, but its protocol comparison page lists H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS. Verify current support in Live Control Room.
Latency Usually higher because delivery is segment-based. YouTube describes RTMPS as suitable for ordinary content, including low-latency use.
Media and transport Muxed M2TS with HEVC video and AAC audio; upload media playlists and segments over HTTPS. RTMP carried over TLS using the correct ingest URL and application path, port 443, and SNI.
HDR Supported with HEVC and the required 10-bit color metadata. YouTube says HDR over RTMP(S) is supported with H.265, but the protocol documentation conflict still applies.
Best fit Use when you need an explicitly documented HEVC path and can accept higher latency. Consider when lower latency matters, but test HEVC compatibility before depending on it.

For HLS, obtain the HLS ingestion address through the YouTube Live API or creator interface. The creator-interface route is described as beta and may change. YouTube’s HLS guide says segments are one to four seconds and that HLS typically has more latency than RTMP or WebRTC. The protocol comparison page was last updated 2026-06-01 UTC; the conflicting HEVC listings have not been reconciled in the cited documentation. Inspect the source file and server first

Before passthrough, identify the file’s video codec and profile, pixel format and bit depth, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio codec, and container. A file can contain valid HEVC video but still need its audio or container changed for YouTube HLS. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding streams; transcoding decodes and re-encodes them, which can reduce quality and uses more CPU or GPU. These are workflow distinctions: YouTube’s requirements do not validate a particular file or FFmpeg command.

  • Confirm that the source plays correctly from beginning to end and includes the audio track you intend to send.
  • Check that the remote server can read the entire source and has stable outbound bandwidth above the selected stream bitrate. Allow practical headroom for protocol overhead and network variation; YouTube does not prescribe a specific headroom percentage in the cited encoder guidance.
  • For HDR, verify that the source’s actual color metadata matches your output configuration. Do not label SDR material as HDR by changing tags alone.

Meet YouTube’s HLS requirements

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room or the Live API, obtain the HLS ingest address for the intended stream. Keep the stream key and ingest credentials private.
  2. Prepare a muxed M2TS output with HEVC video and AAC audio. The cited HLS guide supports up to 60 fps and requires a closed GOP. It supports a single audio track.
  3. Send the media playlist—not a master playlist—and its media segments to YouTube using HTTPS with HTTP PUT or POST. The guide specifies segments lasting one to four seconds.
  4. Configure the playlist as rolling, use TS segments, avoid byte ranges, and upload over HTTPS as described in YouTube’s HLS requirements. Check the current guide for details relevant to your encoder or muxer.

HLS is a protocol workflow, not simply an RTMP URL with a different prefix: it involves playlists and separate media segments. Confirm that the encoder or software on your server can produce the required M2TS and HLS uploads before scheduling an event.

HDR-specific requirements

YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for HEVC, 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, PQ or HLG transfer characteristics, Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix, and matching source metadata. Confirm all of these in the actual output and source; a codec label by itself does not make a stream HDR. See YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance.

Set HEVC bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its encoder settings page recommends up to 60 fps and gives these HEVC bitrates. These are YouTube service recommendations, not independent performance measurements.

Output resolution and frame rate YouTube HEVC recommendation
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps
4K at 30 fps 30 Mbps
4K at 60 fps 35 Mbps

Choose the row that matches the output you will actually send, not just the resolution of the source file. YouTube publishes codec-specific recommendations; do not substitute H.264 figures for HEVC. For current minimums and other output combinations, consult the live encoder settings page.

If you use RTMPS, verify HEVC before going live

RTMPS can be a reasonable option when the encoder and stream configuration support it, but the official YouTube pages currently disagree about HEVC over RTMP/RTMPS. Do not assume that an RTMPS stream key accepts H.265 just because a general encoder page lists it.

  1. Get the RTMPS ingest address and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room or the Live API.
  2. Use the provided server and application path with the rtmps protocol. Connect over TLS on port 443 and send the correct server hostname using SNI.
  3. Check that the stream configuration and encoder support HEVC for that exact ingest route. If this is not clear, use the documented HLS route or test RTMPS before the event.
  4. Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings before broadcasting again.

YouTube’s RTMPS guidance notes that SSL errors can point to an incorrect endpoint or port, while timeouts can occur when plain RTMP is used instead of RTMPS. See the RTMPS ingestion guide.

Test from the remote server and monitor the live event

YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, and monitor stream health and warning messages while it is live. A useful rehearsal uses the same source, server, protocol, bitrate, audio path, and approximate duration as the event.

Troubleshoot common remote-server failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube rejects the video or no video appears HEVC is not accepted on the selected ingest route, or the container/output does not meet the route’s requirements. For an unambiguous documented HEVC path, use HLS with muxed M2TS and AAC; if using RTMPS, confirm compatibility in the current Live Control Room configuration.
Video appears but audio is missing Audio is absent, unsupported, or not muxed as required. Confirm there is one AAC audio track in the HLS output and that the server is sending it.
Connection times out Wrong transport, endpoint, or network route; plain RTMP may have been attempted instead of RTMPS. Check the exact ingest URL, application path, protocol, and outbound network access.
TLS or SSL error on RTMPS Incorrect endpoint or port, or missing/mismatched SNI hostname. Use the supplied RTMPS address, port 443, TLS, and the ingest server hostname for SNI.
Stream health warns or playback breaks up Unstable outbound capacity, unsuitable bitrate, or source/encoder interruption. Compare actual output bitrate with YouTube’s HEVC recommendation, check network stability, and repeat the test under representative conditions.
HDR looks wrong or is not recognized Color metadata does not match the source or required HDR output. Verify 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, PQ or HLG, Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix, and matching metadata.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than operate your own remote-server pipeline, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; the cloud loops the uploaded video and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It is YouTube-only and does not broadcast a live camera feed.

Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. Each slot includes one always-on stream and 10 GB storage pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo pricing for the available billing periods and details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use FFmpeg to send an H.265 file to YouTube Live?

FFmpeg may be part of a server workflow, but the required output depends on the ingest protocol. YouTube’s HLS requirements specify M2TS, HEVC, AAC, and playlist/segment uploads; the documentation here does not validate a specific FFmpeg command.

Does HLS have a fixed end-to-end delay?

The cited YouTube material says HLS usually has higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC, but does not provide a measured end-to-end delay for this workflow.
