You can run a continuous YouTube livestream of a podcast archive by hosting an encoder such as FFmpeg on an always-on VPS. First create a YouTube Live event, then configure the VPS encoder to send the archive to that event using YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key. The VPS keeps the encoder running; YouTube Studio manages the broadcast and its viewer-facing page. This is a deployment pattern, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery.
How the VPS and YouTube Live fit together
YouTube treats the viewer-facing event and the incoming media feed as separate resources. Its API documentation describes a broadcast as an event viewers can watch and a stream as the feed carrying audio and video. The VPS runs the encoder process that sends the feed; it does not create or publish the YouTube event by itself. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
The basic path is: prepare the archive, create or schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio, configure FFmpeg with the event’s ingest details, start the encoder, verify its preview, and bring the event live if Studio requires that action.
Prepare the podcast archive
Choose what the audience will see
Inventory the episodes and decide their order, how they will repeat, and what visual treatment accompanies the audio. You might use a prepared video file or a static image with the episode audio. Ensure the selected files are in a location the VPS process can read, and check that transitions and audio/video synchronization behave as intended.

Check rights before broadcasting
Confirm that you have permission to livestream every episode and any music, clips, artwork, or other third-party material it contains. Rights depend on the specific content and permissions; no general setup guide can establish that your archive is cleared. YouTube’s encoder guidance also does not determine whether a particular repeatedly played archive qualifies for monetization or satisfies channel-specific rules. Treat rights and monetization eligibility as separate checks, not as a consequence of successfully connecting an encoder.
Create the YouTube Live event

In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live.

Create a stream or schedule one from the Manage tab. Scheduling can let viewers find the event and set reminders.

In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL (ingest endpoint) and stream key for the event. YouTube’s instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Keep the stream key secret. It functions like a credential: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, source control, or logs. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.

YouTube allows creators to reuse stream settings for later broadcasts. The API’s separate broadcast and stream model is useful when planning a long-running feed: the feed can continue while broadcasts are started and completed separately. See LiveBroadcasts and LiveStreams.
Run FFmpeg from the VPS
Install and stage the encoder inputs
Choose a Linux VPS and install FFmpeg using the method supported by that server’s operating system. Place the archive media where FFmpeg can access it. There is no universally established minimum VPS size for this workload: requirements depend on the media, any video processing, output format, and sustained encoder load. Check the VPS plan’s sustained CPU capacity, storage, network transfer limits, region, and support terms, then measure the chosen configuration rather than assuming a particular plan is sufficient.
Configure playback and output deliberately
Set up FFmpeg to read the intended episode or playlist, play at real-time speed, and send the output to YouTube’s supplied ingest endpoint with the event’s stream key. For a continuous archive, explicitly configure the playlist or repeat behavior you want; test how files transition and whether sound and picture remain synchronized. FFmpeg supports RTMP workflows; consult its current protocol documentation for protocol details.
The cited workflow does not establish a command, codec, bitrate, resolution, or VPS specification that is right for every archive. Choose those settings for the actual source files and verify them against YouTube’s current encoder guidance before launch. Do not assume a command copied from another setup is suitable without testing it with your media.

Use secure ingest
When supported by your encoder, use RTMPS. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through an SSL connection and specifies that the endpoint, application path, and port must be correct; its documented port is 443. Follow the endpoint details supplied for your event rather than guessing or substituting a URL. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
Keep the process from silently stopping
Consider running FFmpeg under a service manager or equivalent restart policy, and add health checks and alerts so an encoder exit or VPS reboot is noticed. Keep a recovery procedure for reconnecting the encoder and confirming the event’s status. These are operational safeguards, not a promise that a VPS or stream will never fail.

Check Live Control Room for an incoming preview. Confirm that the intended picture and audio arrive.

If the event is scheduled and Studio prompts you, click Go live in Live Control Room.

Watch from a separate viewer session. Check sound, episode order, playback stability, and the visual treatment rather than relying on the encoder process alone.
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe waiting for the preview and then starting a scheduled event in Live Control Room. A connected encoder is not, by itself, confirmation that the viewer-facing event is live.

Plan for YouTube archives and replays
YouTube states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That is a duration condition, not a promise of a complete automatic replay for a continuous event lasting 12 hours or more. If preserving a complete replay matters, design event lengths and restart or scheduling behavior around that limit, then check the resulting archive in Studio. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
