You can use FFmpeg to send a repeating playlist of Malayalam movie-song files to a YouTube live event, but the files and stream setup do not grant music rights. Before broadcasting, get permission for the specific recordings and musical works, confirm that the license covers live streaming and your intended territories, and ask relevant Content ID owners to allowlist your channel. Then build and test the playlist, configure YouTube’s ingest details, and monitor the broadcast for interruptions.
1. Clear the rights before preparing the playlist
A Malayalam film song can involve rights in both the underlying musical work and the particular sound recording. A license to download a track or listen to it personally is not necessarily permission to broadcast it live. For each track, identify the label, distributor, publisher, or other relevant rights holders and get written permission that covers the actual use.
- Confirm permission for public online live streaming, the territories where viewers may watch, any monetization, and whether the live broadcast may be archived.
- Ask the relevant Content ID owners to add your YouTube channel to their allowlist. YouTube Help says licensed third-party content can still cause a live stream to be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted.
- Keep records of permissions and the tracks they cover, and check that the permission applies to the exact recording in your playlist.
For India-related rights questions, the Copyright Act distinguishes musical works from sound recordings and includes rights concerning communication to the public. Those general provisions do not establish who owns an individual film song or whether a particular license covers your stream. Do not assume that a statutory broadcasting-license route automatically applies to a creator’s 24/7 YouTube broadcast; eligibility for this use is not established here. If the scope is unclear, seek advice from a qualified rights professional.

2. Prepare compatible files and a playlist
Use only files you are authorized to stream. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a plain-text list and presents the listed media files sequentially. Its documentation requires compatible inputs with the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Incorrect duration information can create artifacts, and differences in stream lengths can cause gaps when timelines are adjusted.
Create the file list
Make a text file such as playlist.txt with one entry per media file, in the order you want them played:

Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg. If a path contains an apostrophe or other special character, follow the concat demuxer’s escaping rules rather than assuming the example syntax will work unchanged. Keep the list and files accessible to the FFmpeg process.
Check the playlist before going live
- Confirm that every listed file opens and contains the expected audio and, if applicable, video streams.
- Check that the inputs have matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases before relying on concatenation.
- Review durations and listen or watch across several transitions. A sequential list does not guarantee gapless playback.
- If the files are not compatible, prepare a consistent set of media and retest the resulting transitions. Technical normalization does not change your rights obligations.
Loop the list
A concat list plays its entries in sequence; it does not, by itself, describe an endless playlist. FFmpeg builds and input combinations can differ, so test the looping behavior with the installed build before scheduling a long stream. The following is a command template, not a copy-and-run command: replace each angle-bracketed item with the encoder, muxer, and ingest URL appropriate to your files and YouTube event.

Here, -stream_loop -1 requests repeated input, while -re reads at real-time rate. Verify both options’ behavior with your FFmpeg build and media before using the command for a continuous broadcast. The video and audio encoder options, muxer, and ingest URL depend on the selected YouTube ingest workflow and your source files; the example intentionally does not prescribe one universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or command for every channel.
3. Create the YouTube live event and protect its stream key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live event and select the ingest method available for your channel.
- Open the event’s stream settings and retrieve the ingest details, including the stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public playlist, paste it into a public post, or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Put the event’s ingest details into your encoder configuration, replacing the placeholders in the FFmpeg template. Check that the selected muxer and encoded media are suitable for the ingest method you chose.
- Start with a test broadcast and confirm that YouTube reports an incoming stream before relying on the event for a long run.
YouTube’s API describes a live event as a liveBroadcast associated with a liveStream; creators can configure the corresponding event and ingest details in Studio. Check the current labels and availability in your own Studio account, since channel eligibility and features can vary.

Use the ingest path configured for your event rather than copying settings from a different protocol. HLS is an option with its own implementation requirements; its settings are not universal instructions for a basic RTMP workflow.

4. Set encoder values from the event and the media
Do not pick bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval by guesswork or by copying an HLS setting into another protocol. The correct values depend on the ingest path, the source files, and YouTube’s current instructions for that event. Check YouTube Studio and the applicable encoder guidance, then configure FFmpeg to match. If your source files differ, test the actual playlist rather than assuming a setting that works for one track will work for all of them.
The cited HLS requirements are specific: M2TS muxing, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, one audio track, closed GOP, and bounded segment lengths. They do not supply a universal FFmpeg command for every creator or establish universal numeric encoding targets for a non-HLS stream. Validate the output format and transitions in a test event before switching to a public broadcast.

YouTube for Artists says first-time live-stream access should be enabled at least 24 hours before the first broadcast. If this is your channel’s first stream, verify access early rather than waiting until the planned start time. YouTube for Artists also recommends testing with an unlisted broadcast and coordinating with a label or distributor when using protected music.

- Start an unlisted test using the same playlist, FFmpeg build, output settings, and ingest method planned for the real event.
- Confirm that sound and picture are present, the live status is healthy in YouTube Studio, and playback continues across several track changes and at least one playlist repeat.
- Watch Studio for stream-status warnings and copyright notices. Resolve errors before making the event public.
- During the public stream, keep a way to monitor the encoder and Studio dashboard. A process that is still running locally does not prove that YouTube is still receiving or allowing the stream.
6. Understand Content ID interruptions and archived streams
YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects protected material, it may replace the picture with a placeholder, warn the operator, or interrupt or terminate the stream if the material continues. A live stream can therefore be disrupted even when the operator believes the music is licensed; YouTube specifically advises asking the owner to allowlist the channel through Content ID.
If you archive the event, a Content ID claim can arrive after the live stream has ended. Make sure your rights cover the archived replay as well as the live transmission, if you intend to keep the archive available. An allowlist request and a license are related safeguards, but neither should be treated as a substitute for confirming that the permission covers your planned use.
7. Troubleshoot common failures
