You can use a Windows VPS to send a prerecorded video or playlist to YouTube Live around the clock, but a VPS does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream. The machine must sustain the encoder’s workload and upload rate, and the encoder must keep working after you disconnect from Remote Desktop. Verify channel eligibility first, then test the exact VPS plan and setup before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before buying a VPS or scheduling the broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup instructions.
- A Windows VPS plan that can sustain your chosen encoder workload, outgoing bitrate and media storage needs.
- An encoder configured to send video to YouTube Live. OBS is one option listed in YouTube’s verified encoder directory; that listing does not guarantee OBS will work reliably on every VPS.
- Permission to stream every video and audio element, including the necessary rights in the territories where the stream is available.
Choose a VPS for the workload, not a generic spec
There is no established universal CPU or RAM configuration that guarantees a 24/7 YouTube stream from a Windows VPS. The requirements differ depending on whether your software decodes and re-encodes video or forwards a feed that is already encoded. A plan that works for one workload may not work for another.
Before choosing a plan, write down the resolution, frame rate, codec and output bitrate you intend to use, whether the encoder will re-encode, and how much video you need to store locally. Ask the provider to clarify:
- Whether Windows is available and supported under the plan’s terms.
- What sustained CPU resources are available, rather than only a burst or advertised peak.
- Whether a usable virtual display, GPU or hardware encoder is available if your chosen software needs one.
- Whether graphics and the encoder remain usable after an ordinary Remote Desktop disconnect.
- The sustained outbound capacity, monthly data-transfer allowance, and overage charges.
- What happens to the VPS and its applications after a restart or host maintenance.
Do not assume that a successful desktop login proves the VPS can encode continuously. If the VPS provider cannot confirm a relevant capability, treat it as unknown and test it with the exact software and settings you plan to use. Historical user reports about OBS and Windows VPS/RDP setups are not an authoritative compatibility ruling; see the OBS forum discussion for context.

Estimate upload capacity and monthly transfer
YouTube recommends RTMPS and says to allow 20% upload headroom above your stream’s bitrate. For example, a 6 Mbps output calls for at least 7.2 Mbps of sustained upload capacity under that recommendation. This is a planning calculation, not a guarantee of a stable route or of a VPS plan’s performance. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and streaming tips.
A continuous stream also uses outbound data throughout the month. As a rough estimate, multiply the output bitrate in megabits per second by 10.8 to estimate gigabytes transferred per 24 hours (using decimal gigabytes and ignoring protocol overhead). At 6 Mbps, that is about 64.8 GB per day, or roughly 1,944 GB over 30 days. Actual transfer can be higher because of protocol overhead and any other outbound traffic. Compare the estimate with the plan’s monthly quota and overage rules before you start.

Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Enable live streaming. Verify the channel, check that it has no active live-streaming restrictions, and enable live streaming if it is not already available. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or select a live stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the event you intend to use. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions.
- Install an encoder on the VPS. Choose software that supports the workload and operating environment you have verified. OBS appears in YouTube’s encoder directory, but YouTube’s encoder documentation does not certify a particular VPS or promise that OBS will run reliably on it.
- Enter the YouTube ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, scripts, or public logs. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio.
- Add the prerecorded video. In the encoder, add the video as a media source or configure a playlist, then enable looping using the controls provided by that software. Labels and exact controls vary by encoder version, so confirm the source repeats instead of assuming it will.
- Set output parameters the VPS can sustain. Use a resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate supported by both the encoder and YouTube’s current guidance. Prefer RTMPS, then test representative footage with the same audio, movement and output settings you expect to use. A configuration that looks acceptable on a static clip may behave differently with more motion or a heavier encode.
- Start with a test audience setting. Where appropriate, run the event as unlisted or private. Wait for the Live Control Room preview, inspect stream-health messages, and check the event’s watch page, picture and audio before using a public event.
Prove the setup survives unattended operation
Test the whole path on the actual VPS plan, not just a short desktop session. Keep the selected settings and media source in place, start the stream, and check playback from the viewer’s side. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality; its live-streaming tips explain the broader preparation and monitoring process.
- Disconnect Remote Desktop in the way you expect to use it. Confirm the encoder continues sending and that its display or graphics path does not fail.
- Restart the encoder and the VPS separately. Confirm the media source, loop and stream configuration recover as expected.
- Watch for encoder errors, dropped ingest, stalled playback, missing audio and VPS resource pressure during representative video.
- Check that your chosen restart and recovery behavior actually works. Do not assume an application will relaunch or reconnect unless you have tested it.
- If you configure a backup encoder or backup ingest, test failover rather than treating the backup as protection merely because it is configured.
No test of a brief session establishes guaranteed 24/7 uptime. Your provider, the VPS workload, the network route, the encoder and YouTube ingest are all part of the operating chain, so continue checking stream health after launch.

Plan the broadcast and its archive separately
A continuous 24/7 feed is not the same thing as a single complete archived 24-hour video. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not promise that one uninterrupted stream lasting 24 hours or longer will produce one complete replay; check current archiving behavior in YouTube Studio and plan shorter sessions if a complete archive matters.
Rights and YouTube policy still apply to replays
Streaming a recording does not make it exempt from copyright or platform rules. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions say that live content must comply with the Community Guidelines and require the streamer to have the necessary rights to exploit the content worldwide, including music rights. Check the live-stream restriction guidance before broadcasting. A video being public or previously uploaded does not by itself establish that you have permission to rebroadcast it.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely checks and next steps |
|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | Check channel verification, current live-stream restrictions and whether first-time activation has finished. YouTube says first activation may take up to 24 hours. |
| The Live Control Room does not receive video | Confirm the selected event, ingest URL and stream key. Check the encoder’s connection status and stream-health messages. If the key may have been exposed, rotate it rather than continuing to use it. |
| The stream works only while Remote Desktop is connected | Test the VPS’s graphics and session behavior after disconnecting. Ask the provider whether the relevant virtual display or encoder remains available; do not assume an RDP session is safe to close. |
| Video stutters or the encoder falls behind | Check sustained CPU or encoder load, the selected bitrate, and the VPS’s sustained upload. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom. Reduce the workload or choose a plan that can sustain it, then repeat a representative test. |
| Playback has no sound or stops at the end of a clip | Check the source’s audio routing and whether the encoder’s media source or playlist is configured to loop. Verify both behaviors in a test broadcast. |
| The stream drops and does not return | Inspect encoder and host logs, then test the restart or reconnect behavior you have configured. YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee that a VPS or encoder will recover automatically. |
| You need a complete replay of the broadcast | Check current archive behavior in Studio. YouTube’s encoder instructions state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer uninterrupted session will yield one complete archive. |
