A busy disk might matter if OBS is recording locally or reading stream media from that drive, but disk activity alone does not prove why viewers see buffering. OBS reports network drops, rendering lag, and encoding lag separately; check which signal changes during the problem, then compare it with the recording, upload connection, YouTube stream health, and playback latency.
Does a busy disk cause YouTube stream buffering?
Not necessarily. YouTube’s published live-stream guidance does not set a minimum disk speed or establish that a busy disk by itself causes viewer-side buffering. Disk activity is a lead to investigate when OBS is writing a local recording or reading media files from the affected drive. A coincidence between disk activity and buffering is not proof of cause.
Start by identifying where the symptom occurs. If OBS shows network drops, investigate the connection and bitrate. If rendering or encoding lag rises, investigate OBS performance. If the local recording stalls or stops growing, investigate that recording workflow and its storage. If the broadcaster’s indicators remain stable while viewers report buffering, playback latency or viewer-side conditions may be relevant.
Check what is using the disk
- Identify the workload. Check whether OBS is recording an archive, using a replay-buffer or other recording workflow, or reading media-source files from the busy drive.
- Watch the timing. Note whether the disk activity and the stream symptom begin and end together. Treat that timing as a clue, not a diagnosis.
- Inspect the local recording. Check that the archive file is intact and that its size continues to grow during the stream. YouTube’s guidance recommends these checks for local archives; they do not establish a general disk-speed threshold.
- Check the destination and available space. OBS exposes disk-space information. Confirm the recording destination is the one you intend to use and that it has room for the file.
- Compare with a test without local recording. If it is practical, briefly test the stream without recording locally. If the symptom changes, that supports investigating the local recording workload; it does not by itself identify the drive as the cause.
Read OBS’s performance signals separately
During the symptom, check OBS’s statistics for three distinct counters: frames missed due to rendering lag, skipped frames due to encoding lag, and network-dropped frames. Record which one rises; each points toward a different part of the setup. The labels may vary by OBS version, and the interface terminology shown in the OBS project’s current English locale source is not pinned here to a particular release.

| What changes during the symptom | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Network-dropped frames rise, with a yellow or red connection indicator | The connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS says it drops frames to compensate and keep the stream playing. | Test outbound upload speed, check YouTube stream-health messages, and compare total stream bitrate with stable upload capacity. |
| Frames missed due to rendering lag rise | OBS may not be rendering frames in time; GPU load or scene/rendering complexity may be involved. | Inspect GPU/rendering load and scene complexity using the OBS performance guide. |
| Skipped frames due to encoding lag rise | Encoding performance may be constrained. | Inspect encoder load and settings. This counter alone does not show that disk speed is the problem. |
| The local recording stalls, fails an integrity check, or stops growing while disk activity spikes | The local recording or storage workflow deserves investigation. | Check its destination, file growth, free space, and whether the symptom persists without local recording. |
| Broadcaster-side indicators look stable, but viewers report buffering | Playback-side conditions, viewer connection or device, or stream latency may be relevant. | Review YouTube latency settings and ask affected viewers for details about their device and connection. |
OBS’s encoding-performance guidance discusses GPU load and rendering/encoding resources as possible sources of choppy output or an “encoding overloaded” warning. That warning is not proof of a slow disk. Keep encoder and rendering trouble separate from network drops and from a recording destination that is demonstrably struggling. See the OBS Help Portal and its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.
Test upload speed and connection stability
The stream’s total bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate and advises testing outbound upload speed; download speed alone does not establish that the upload connection can sustain the stream. Test under representative network load, since other network use and connection disruptions can affect streaming. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages while testing.

For example, a stream sending at 10 Mbps needs at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity to preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. That is a calculation from the recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection with that speed will remain stable. See YouTube’s Streaming tips and YouTube live streaming tips.

| H.264 output | YouTube live bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 options, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (not more than 4 seconds). Test using movement and audio representative of the real stream, then monitor stream health. These settings help isolate configuration and connection issues; they do not establish a storage-speed requirement. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Consider stream latency when viewers report buffering
A stable-looking broadcaster-side stream does not rule out buffering during playback. YouTube warns that “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” If OBS counters and stream-health indicators remain stable, review the selected latency setting and collect viewer-side details instead of assuming the local disk is responsible. See Manage live stream settings.

Should you buy a faster drive?
Only consider an external SSD or other storage change if the evidence points to local recording or disk-based media reads. The reviewed YouTube and OBS guidance does not specify a minimum disk throughput for a 24/7 stream or demonstrate that buying an SSD will fix viewer buffering. First check recording integrity and growth, destination, free space, and whether the symptom persists when local recording is off.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud rather than from OBS on your home computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video; it does not go live from a camera.
