You can run a continuous YouTube stream from a Mumbai VPS by looping prepared video through FFmpeg and sending it to YouTube with an RTMPS stream URL and key. The ongoing cost is not just the VPS rental: estimate outbound data at your chosen bitrate, then verify each provider’s transfer allowance, overage charges, sustained network capacity and renewal price before you buy. No current first-party Mumbai VPS plan and price is established here, so there is no defensible “cheapest plan” or guaranteed monthly total to name.

Before you start: confirm the channel can go live

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current help page also says creators must be at least 16 to live stream. Check the current YouTube live-stream prerequisites for your account and location.
  • Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream, and follow YouTube’s applicable terms and Community Guidelines. A looping video is still a live broadcast for these purposes; see YouTube’s livestream terms.
  • Decide whether you need a YouTube replay. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so plan shorter sessions and test your channel’s restart behavior if replay capture matters. YouTube’s archive guidance says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Keep a separate local or cloud recording if you need a dependable copy.

Choose the VPS by total cost, not its headline port speed

A Mumbai location may suit your audience or workflow, but it does not by itself guarantee a stable route to YouTube ingest. For a VPS comparison, confirm all of these details directly with the provider before committing:

  • Recurring monthly price and renewal price, including any taxes or introductory-rate changes.
  • Included outbound transfer, fair-use limits, egress charges and the policy for exceeding the allowance.
  • Whether a stated port speed is a shared maximum or a sustained allocation. A “1 Gbps port” does not establish how much monthly transfer is included.
  • CPU allocation and whether the VPS can sustain your chosen software-encoding workload. For simple looping, avoid unnecessary real-time filters or transcoding.
  • Actual route and stability from the chosen Mumbai host to YouTube. Treat location and advertised capacity as items to verify with a live test, not performance guarantees.

There is no verified current first-party Mumbai plan price available to support a specific “cheapest” recommendation. Budget for the VM plus any transfer or overage charges, and test the selected host before relying on it for a continuous channel.

Estimate the monthly outbound transfer

For one continuous output, estimate decimal data as: bitrate in megabits per second ÷ 8 × 3,600 seconds × 24 hours × 30 days. This assumes the configured bitrate runs continuously; it excludes protocol overhead and retries, and the results are arithmetic estimates rather than platform measurements.

Configured bitrate Approximate outbound data over 30 days Context
4.5 Mbps 1.46 decimal TB Example calculation for a single output.
8 Mbps 2.59 decimal TB YouTube-recommended H.264 rate for 720p30.
14 Mbps 4.54 decimal TB YouTube-recommended H.264 rate for 1080p30.

YouTube’s current encoder settings recommend 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30 and 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. Those are recommendations, not a requirement to use those exact settings; a lower bitrate reduces transfer but needs a quality test on your content. Separately, Google recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the combined primary and backup bitrates. Under that rule, a 4.5 Mbps single output needs at least 5.4 Mbps of stable outbound capacity. Capacity headroom is not the same thing as a monthly transfer allowance; see YouTube’s streaming tips.

Configure YouTube and prepare the source

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the scheduled live stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  2. For ingest, use RTMPS when supported. YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS encoder ingest and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1. Follow the current values in its encoder settings; for H.264, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Match the resolution and frame rate to the source and the quality you can sustain.
  3. Prepare a video file or playlist with permission to use every visual and audio element. Check duration, audio levels and playback from beginning to end before uploading it to the VPS. If the program is only a repeating file, a headless FFmpeg process is usually simpler than maintaining a graphical desktop.
  4. Calculate transfer using the bitrate you actually configure, then check that the plan’s included egress covers the expected monthly volume. Include margin for overhead, retries and any other traffic on the instance.

Run a looping video with FFmpeg

Install FFmpeg on your Linux VPS using the package method appropriate to its distribution, then send a looped source to the RTMPS ingest URL shown in your Live Control Room. A typical single-file pattern is:

The Psychology of Money: Timeless lessons on wealth, greed, and happiness

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Replace the file path and ingest URL with your own values; do not paste a real stream key into public logs, shared shell history or a public script. This example encodes H.264 at 4.5 Mbps video and 128 kbps audio, at 30 fps with a 60-frame GOP (a two-second keyframe interval). It is a starting configuration, not a tested command or a reliability guarantee. If the source already matches your intended output, encoding still consumes CPU; validate performance and stream health before leaving it unattended. YouTube’s current recommendations should take precedence over this example where they differ.

Preview before you leave it running

  1. Start the process and wait for YouTube’s Live Control Room to show the incoming stream.
  2. Use the preview to check picture, audio, resolution, frame rate and stability before starting the public broadcast.
  3. Stop and start the encoder once during a test so you know how the channel behaves after a reconnect. Confirm that the key and ingest destination are correct.
  4. Watch VPS CPU, memory, network traffic and FFmpeg output during the test. If encoding overloads the CPU, simplify the workflow, lower the output demand or choose a VPS that can sustain it.

Keep the process recoverable

A VPS can stay powered on while the encoder process exits or loses its network connection. Use a process supervisor to restart the encoder after a failure and configure alerts for process exit, network loss and stream health. Protect the stream key in the service configuration and restrict access to it. Test recovery deliberately before relying on it: a process restart alone does not prove that YouTube has resumed a healthy broadcast or that an archive will be created.

When OBS makes more sense

Use OBS on a VPS when you need graphical scene composition, overlays or a workflow that depends on OBS features. A desktop environment and graphical encoder add operating-system and resource overhead compared with a simple headless FFmpeg loop. Check that the VPS can sustain the chosen output and test the full scene and reconnect path; do not assume that a low-cost instance can encode any resolution or frame rate continuously.

Self-managed VPS or managed streaming?

The trade-off is operational control versus the work of administering the stream. A VPS gives you control over the operating system and media process, but you must account for infrastructure charges, protect keys, monitor the encoder and arrange recovery. A managed service moves the ongoing stream workload off your VPS connection after you upload the source, but you should verify its actual terms and limits before choosing it.

Consideration Self-managed Mumbai VPS Managed streaming service
Cash cost VM charge plus any transfer or overage fees; provider-specific current cost must be verified. Service fee and included limits depend on the service and plan.
Setup effort Install and configure an encoder, protect the stream key, supervise the process and review logs. StreamNeo’s service description uses source upload and stream-key setup; check the current service details.
Control More control over the operating system, process and media handling. Less infrastructure to administer; available controls depend on the service.
Recovery You arrange process restarts, monitoring and any failover. StreamNeo says it provides automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; this is a vendor description, not an independent reliability benchmark.
Network accounting The continuous stream consumes outbound transfer from the VPS connection. After uploading, StreamNeo’s cloud sends the continuing stream to YouTube; your VPS is not needed for that ongoing output.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only managed service for playing uploaded videos as a continuing live stream. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays the uploaded file rather than broadcasting a camera feed.

Troubleshooting a VPS stream

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not detect the stream. Wrong ingest URL or key, encoder not sending, or a connection problem. Re-copy the server URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the process is running, and check FFmpeg output and VPS connectivity. Keep the key private.
The stream starts but buffers or drops. Unstable outbound capacity, insufficient headroom, or host route issues. Check sustained outbound capacity against the configured bitrate and Google’s 20% headroom recommendation; test the route and inspect network loss before increasing bitrate.
Video stutters or the VPS is overloaded. Software encoding, filters or scene composition exceed the instance’s sustained CPU capacity. Inspect CPU usage, remove unnecessary processing, reduce output demands or move to an instance capable of sustaining the workload.
Picture quality is poor. Bitrate is too low for the source’s resolution, motion or detail. Test a higher bitrate within your VPS capacity and transfer allowance, or use a lower resolution. Compare against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
The encoder stops and the channel goes offline. The FFmpeg process exited or the VPS lost connectivity; no recovery supervision is configured or working. Review process logs and host status, configure a supervisor and alerting, then test that a restart restores an incoming stream in YouTube’s preview.
A replay is missing after a long broadcast. The session exceeded YouTube’s archive duration guidance. Keep sessions under 12 hours when archive capture matters, test automated restarts in the channel and keep a separate recording if you need a copy.
