A freeze when a playlist returns to a large video file does not, by itself, prove the file is too large or that YouTube is at fault. First find where the freeze appears: in the source or local playback, in the encoder output, or only on YouTube. Then test the repeat boundary while checking YouTube’s stream health and a local recording.
Find where the freeze starts
At the next failure, note the time and compare three views: the source file in a local player, the encoder preview or local archive, and playback in YouTube. The first place that freezes narrows the likely cause; the title alone cannot identify it.
- The file or local player freezes: Check whether the file plays through its end and starts again correctly outside the streaming setup.
- The encoder preview or archive freezes: Investigate the media source, loop configuration, and system workload. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality and checking local archive integrity. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance and guidance on stream errors.
- The local output stays healthy, but YouTube playback freezes: Check encoder errors, the outbound connection, and YouTube’s Live Control Room health messages. YouTube identifies outbound internet as a possible cause when encoder output appears healthy. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.
Check whether the local archive is still growing and whether it also freezes at the playlist boundary. A healthy archive alongside a freeze on YouTube points away from local media playback, but does not by itself identify the cause.
Check the playlist source and loop setting
In OBS, identify whether the item is a Media Source or a VLC Video source. They use different loop controls, so confirm the setting for the source type you actually added. OBS documents a per-file Loop option for Media Source and Loop Playlist for VLC Video; VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. Consult the OBS media sources guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open the source’s properties in OBS and confirm the intended file or playlist is selected.
- For a Media Source, check its Loop setting. For VLC Video, check Loop Playlist.
- Play the file through its end in a local player, then observe whether it restarts cleanly. This distinguishes a file or playback issue from a problem that occurs only during streaming.
- Test the full playlist repeat in OBS and inspect the preview and local archive at the boundary.
OBS also provides a hardware-decoding option for Media Source, but its documentation does not present enabling it as a universal fix. If practical, compare the current setting with the opposite setting, change only that variable, and keep a note of the original configuration.
Test whether system workload is involved
High-resolution media and complex scenes can demand more system resources. OBS recommends simplifying scenes or using lower-resolution media when performance is a problem; that makes a reduced-workload test useful for diagnosis, not proof that every large file causes freezes. See OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.

- Run the same playlist with the scene simplified, leaving other settings unchanged.
- If the freeze persists, try a lower-resolution copy of the file as a separate test.
- Compare the preview, archive, and YouTube playback at the repeat boundary.
- Restore or retain changes based on the result, and avoid changing several settings at once.
If lowering resolution or simplifying the scene changes the result, that is evidence to investigate workload further. It is not a diagnosis on its own.
Check YouTube ingest and stream settings
If the local output remains smooth while YouTube playback freezes, inspect the Live Control Room’s health indicator and timestamped errors, then check the encoder’s reported errors and outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting steps include checking CPU load, the local archive, encoder errors, and the outbound connection.

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the recommendation for your actual output rather than treating one bitrate as universal. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Check that the encoder is configured for the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Inspect the Live Control Room health status and note any errors at the time of the freeze.
- Compare local archive playback with the YouTube stream to see whether the problem appears before or after output leaves the encoder.
- Use YouTube’s live-streaming error guidance to interpret reported errors.
Run a repeat-boundary test before relying on the stream
A short test that ends before the large file returns will not exercise the suspected failure point. Use a private or unlisted stream, let the entire playlist complete at least one repeat, and check the local archive and YouTube playback around that boundary. Continue monitoring stream quality during the test, as YouTube recommends in its live-streaming guidance.

- Record the source type, file resolution, relevant loop setting, and encoder configuration before changing anything.
- Start a private or unlisted test and note when the playlist should reach the large file again.
- At the repeat, check the encoder preview, whether the local archive continues and plays smoothly, and the Live Control Room health indicator.
- If the test fails, use the first point of failure to choose the next controlled change: source or loop, workload, encoder configuration, or outbound delivery.
Common symptoms and next checks
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The source freezes or fails to restart in a local player. | Check whether the file itself plays through its end and whether its restart behaves as expected. |
| OBS preview and archive freeze at the boundary. | Confirm the source type and loop setting; test a simpler scene or lower-resolution copy while changing one variable at a time. |
| The archive is smooth, but YouTube playback freezes. | Inspect Live Control Room health messages, encoder errors, and outbound connection conditions. |
| A setting change appears to help, but the stream has not crossed the boundary again. | Repeat a test long enough to pass the full playlist repeat and compare the archive with YouTube playback. |
No specific hardware purchase is established as a reliable remedy without evidence identifying the cause. The same applies to changing storage or conversion software: first use the comparisons above to locate where the freeze begins.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a computer and home connection running for a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, but moving hosting is an operating-model choice—not a proven fix for a repeat-boundary freeze.
