You can run a math tutoring channel around the clock with OBS, but treat it as a sequence of planned live sessions—not one endless broadcast—if you need reliable replays. Verify that your channel can go live, build a legible lesson scene, connect OBS to YouTube with a stream key, and keep a local recording. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured in the archive, and DVR may be limited or unavailable past that point.
Before you build the stream, check channel eligibility
In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and confirm the channel is allowed to stream. YouTube requires channel verification and says the channel must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its current guidance also says a person must be at least 16 to live stream. If a teacher or participant is younger, check YouTube’s current rules for minors and adult presence before planning the broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and restrictions
If you are managing several simultaneous programs, YouTube’s guidance states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These limits are unlikely to matter for a single tutoring stream.
Build an OBS scene that works for a math lesson
In OBS, create a scene around what students need to see: a large, high-contrast area for equations, diagrams, or worked examples; an instructor camera only if it adds value; and a restrained label for the topic or lesson. Check that equations remain readable at the size viewers are likely to watch. A microphone, camera, or drawing input can be useful, but the right setup depends on the lesson; no specific hardware is required by the YouTube encoder workflow.

A USB drawing tablet is one possible way to write equations on screen. Check its compatibility with your computer and the software you plan to use rather than assuming a particular model will work.
Use only material you have the right to broadcast. That includes textbook pages, commercial problem-bank questions, worksheets, diagrams, photos, and background music. Connect OBS to YouTube and start a session
- Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab to create a stream, or open Manage to schedule one. Scheduling gives students a watch page in advance and lets them set reminders.
- Choose OBS as the encoder connection. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key for the broadcast. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select the YouTube integration/service if it is available, or enter the server URL and key supplied by YouTube. - Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not show it on screen or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live control settings before using the stream again.
- Send the encoder signal. Start streaming in OBS. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming signal and preview to appear. For a scheduled stream, use YouTube’s control room to start the live broadcast when you are ready.
- Check the viewer experience. Confirm the lesson image and audio are present, then monitor the broadcast from YouTube. A short opening slate can tell late arrivals what topic is being covered and where to find the current lesson materials.

Plan a 24/7 schedule around YouTube’s archive limit
A continuous stream is not a dependable way to preserve a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is an operational way to reduce archive risk, not a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting; each handoff involves ending one stream and starting another.
Keep a local recording when the lesson must be preserved. YouTube recommends a local backup, but the disk space and recording settings you need depend on your computer and OBS configuration. Check the local file for intact audio and video rather than assuming that a recording completed successfully.

Choose audience settings and interaction features carefully
Set the audience designation to match the content and intended audience. Do not mark a stream Made for Kids simply because some students are children; use YouTube’s audience guidance to make the designation accurately. If a stream is marked Made for Kids, YouTube disables live chat and Super Chat and does not serve personalized ads on livestreams, though contextual ads may appear. YouTube also says live chat may be disabled when a stream features 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult. Review the current policy if minors participate. If chat is available, decide who will moderate it and how questions will be handled. A tutoring broadcast may attract personal details or off-topic messages, so set clear participation expectations and use YouTube’s live moderation controls.

Eligible channels may have access to live ads, Super Chat or Super Stickers, and channel memberships. Eligibility and feature availability depend on YouTube’s rules, and ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. A continuous broadcast does not establish predictable revenue.

YouTube’s August 12, 2026 post says qualified public watch hours for YouTube Partner Program eligibility include archived livestreams and exclude livestreams that are not archived. Since a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured, retaining a replay can matter to watch-hour calculations, subject to all current Partner Program requirements. Troubleshoot common setup problems
- YouTube does not accept the stream. Confirm the channel is eligible to stream, then check that OBS is using the current server URL and stream key from the intended YouTube stream. Replace a key that was exposed or entered incorrectly.
- Live Control Room shows no incoming preview. Make sure OBS is actually streaming and that the correct YouTube service or server destination is selected. Recheck the stream key and return to YouTube’s control room for the selected broadcast.
- The replay is missing or incomplete. Check whether the stream ran longer than 12 hours; YouTube does not assure an archive for longer broadcasts. Use shorter sessions and retain a local recording when preservation matters.
- Chat or Super Chat is unavailable. Review the audience setting and whether the stream features minors. Made for Kids disables live chat and Super Chat, and YouTube may disable chat for streams featuring 13–15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult.
- A lesson or audio is blocked or restricted. Review all on-screen and audible material for copyright permissions, including textbook content, worksheets, problem-bank material, and music. Copyright claims or strikes can affect live-stream access.
