Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFFmpeg’s “Broken pipe” message means it could not write to its output connection. It does not, by itself, tell you whether the cause was YouTube ingest, a network interruption, the configured endpoint, or something else. Save the FFmpeg log and compare its first error with the timestamped stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room before changing settings.
What “Broken pipe” means—and what it does not
In this situation, FFmpeg reports a failed write to its output connection. That is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The message alone does not prove YouTube caused the failure, that your internet connection dropped, or that a particular encoding flag is wrong. Official documentation describes YouTube ingest checks and FFmpeg output-recovery controls, but does not assign one universal cause to this exact error across all FFmpeg and YouTube configurations.
Before restarting, preserve the evidence. Record the complete command with the stream key and other secrets removed, the full log around the first error, your FFmpeg version and build information, and when the failure occurred and how long the stream had been running. Also note the corresponding YouTube Live Control Room health messages. YouTube displays errors with timestamps and distinguishes critical from moderate errors (YouTube Live streaming error messages).
Troubleshoot the failure in order
1. Find out what actually stopped
Check whether FFmpeg exited, whether only the output write failed, and whether the input loop was still reading or repeating the video. Save logs before restarting: a restart can remove useful context. The log and process status help distinguish an output-connection problem from an input or loop problem, but neither alone establishes the underlying cause.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Match the local error to YouTube’s health report
In Live Control Room, find the error whose timestamp is closest to the first FFmpeg write failure. Follow the specific message: YouTube may flag stream format, bitrate, audio or video settings, keyframe frequency, resolution, or consistency between primary and backup streams. Correct the reported issue rather than changing unrelated options (YouTube’s error guidance).
If YouTube shows no matching error, that does not identify the cause; continue checking the endpoint, connection, and FFmpeg log rather than assuming the stream settings are valid or invalid.

3. Check the encoder settings against the active configuration
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS, video codec options including H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency with a four-second maximum. These are not a substitute for the settings expected by your chosen ingestion configuration: use the actual configuration and any specific Live Control Room warning, rather than treating a generic bitrate or resolution as universal.
YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Its guidance also recommends testing representative content and monitoring stream health during the event (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For the “Incorrect stream format” error case described in YouTube’s error guidance, H.264 video and AAC audio are required. Check the exact error and the current guidance for your protocol and stream configuration; do not apply that requirement as a diagnosis for every broken-pipe message.
4. Verify the RTMPS endpoint and port
Compare the configured server address and port with the current YouTube and encoder instructions. Google’s RTMPS documentation notes that an SSL error can result from connecting to the wrong port (Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS). Never include your stream key in a public log, screenshot, or support request. If it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s streaming settings.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
5. Consider FFmpeg output recovery only after saving a baseline
FFmpeg’s muxer documentation describes output recovery controls such as attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time, and recover_any_error. It also includes an RTMP example that continues at real-time rate while attempting recovery (FFmpeg muxer documentation).
These controls are not a guarantee of seamless recovery, frame-accurate resumption, or that YouTube will keep the same live event open. Depending on configuration, recovery may drop or delay media. Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg release before using an option; available settings can differ. Capture a baseline first so you can compare the original failure with the recovery attempt.

6. Test one change at a time
Before relying on a long-running loop, test with representative audio and motion and watch Live Control Room’s stream-health report. Change one setting, then compare its FFmpeg log and YouTube health messages with the baseline. This makes it easier to tell whether a change addressed the reported problem or merely changed when the stream failed.

| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports a write failure and exits | Save the surrounding log, note the timestamp, and look for a matching Live Control Room error before changing the command. |
| YouTube flags an incorrect format | Follow the specific error guidance; for this error case, YouTube requires H.264 video and AAC audio. Verify the active protocol and configuration. |
| YouTube reports bitrate, resolution, audio/video, or keyframe issues | Correct the value or setting identified by Live Control Room. Do not substitute a generic target when the active ingestion configuration provides a specific expectation. |
| An SSL error appears with RTMPS | Check that the endpoint and port match the current YouTube and encoder instructions. |
| The input appears to continue but the output does not | Inspect the first output-write error and its timestamp; do not assume the video loop itself stopped. |
| A recovery option changes the result but interruptions remain | Compare logs and health reports. Recovery controls may drop or delay media and do not guarantee that the live event remains open. |
