Compare OBS → View → Stats with YouTube Studio → Go Live → Live Control Room → Stream health while the stutter is happening. In OBS, rendering lag and encoding lag point to work your computer is struggling to do; network-dropped frames point to trouble delivering the encoded stream. YouTube’s timestamped health messages report issues with the incoming stream or its settings. Match the timestamps before deciding what to fix.
What “dropped frames” means in OBS
OBS separates three stages of its work. Open View → Stats during a stream and watch which counter increases when the symptom appears. A session-wide percentage can hide a brief burst, so note the time the stutter starts and ends.
Frames missed due to rendering lag
OBS did not render a frame on schedule. This points to local rendering load, often involving GPU resources or other system workload. Complex scenes and sources, or a game using most of the GPU, can contribute. If this counter rises, reduce local workload before changing network equipment.
Skipped frames due to encoding lag
OBS could not encode frames fast enough for the configured output. This is a local encoder or system-performance issue. Check encoder workload and resource pressure, then free up system resources if OBS reports an encoding overload.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Dropped frames (network)
OBS encoded frames but could not deliver them reliably to the remote ingest server at the configured bitrate. OBS says this usually points to connection stability or bitrate capacity, and that “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames” in this network-counter context. That statement does not describe rendering or encoding lag.
What YouTube Stream health can tell you
In YouTube Studio → Go Live → Live Control Room, check Stream health and its status messages while the issue occurs. YouTube’s messages include specific errors and instructions, with timestamps; persistent issues continue to appear. Red and yellow severities indicate critical and moderate problems, respectively. Read the actual error rather than treating a dashboard label as proof of exactly where data was lost.

YouTube’s error guidance covers issues such as format and bitrate. For non-variable-resolution entry points, the configured bitrate must match the selected ingestion setting. If bandwidth is insufficient, YouTube advises lowering the selected resolution and checking its encoder settings guidance. YouTube’s encoder settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the row for your actual output rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
Live Control Room and YouTube Analytics are different reports. YouTube says Analytics is processed and despammed and measures different information; it is not a synchronized, per-frame receipt log from OBS.

Match the symptom to the evidence
| What you observe | What it points toward | First response |
|---|---|---|
| OBS rendering-lag counter rises at the time of the stutter | Local rendering or GPU/system workload | Reduce local load and simplify the scene or sources. |
| OBS encoding-lag counter rises at the time of the stutter | Local encoding performance | Review encoder workload and free system resources. |
| OBS network-dropped counter rises | Delivery from your computer to the remote ingest service | Check stable upload capacity, bitrate, and the network route. |
| YouTube reports a timestamped stream-health error | An incoming-stream or configuration issue reported by YouTube | Follow the message and verify encoder and ingestion settings. |
| OBS and YouTube indicators show no matching issue, but a viewer reports stutter | Possibly a playback or viewer-network issue; creator-side indicators alone do not establish smooth playback for every viewer | Test from another device and network, and distinguish buffering from judder in the source. |
A YouTube error at the same time as OBS network drops strengthens the case that delivery or ingestion is struggling, but does not by itself identify where a packet was lost. The useful clue is whether the counters and timestamped messages align with the visible symptom.
Isolate the problem step by step
- Reproduce the issue briefly. Use motion and audio similar to the real stream. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion before going live.
- Open both dashboards. Keep OBS Stats and Live Control Room Stream health visible. Record the clock time when the stutter starts and which OBS counter changes.
- For rendering or encoding lag, reduce local load. Free GPU and system resources; for a game stream, try reducing game frame rate or GPU load, and simplify scenes or sources. Check whether OBS reports encoder overload.
- For network drops, check the route and bitrate. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate, not a guarantee of stable delivery or compliance with platform limits. Test on a wired connection, and consider another ingest server if the service offers one. OBS also identifies Wi-Fi instability, VPN or security software, bundled network-prioritization software, outdated drivers, router or modem problems, and faulty network hardware as possible causes.
- For a YouTube error, follow its specific instruction. Check that encoder settings match the selected ingestion settings and YouTube guidance for the codec, resolution, and frame rate in use.
- If creator-side indicators look healthy, test playback elsewhere. Compare another device and network. Determine whether the viewer is buffering or seeing judder already present in the source. A single viewer’s report does not establish a stream-wide frame-drop problem.
Bitrate figures: use the matching setting
YouTube’s current Help encoder-settings table, accessed in 2026, recommends H.264 at 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are specific table entries, not universal targets: codec, resolution, and frame rate change the appropriate recommendation. OBS’s 75%-of-total-upload suggestion is a starting point from its connection troubleshooting guidance dated September 30, 2024; stable speed and the service’s limits still matter.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than diagnose a camera or gameplay stream from OBS, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. For India, UPI and cards are accepted; card checkout is available worldwide. This is for looping uploaded video to YouTube, not live camera streaming.
