Set YouTube playback to Data saver or a lower fixed resolution: that is the direct way to reduce the video data delivered while a recorded lecture plays. On Android, you can also set lower quality preferences for mobile networks and Wi-Fi. There is no reliable universal data-per-hour figure for this lecture; check your device or carrier’s counter during a representative playback interval to see what your setup actually uses.
Lower playback quality in the YouTube player
- Start the recorded lecture in YouTube and open the player’s Settings.
- Select Quality.
- Choose Data saver if it is offered. Otherwise, open Advanced and select the lowest resolution that still makes the lecture comfortable to follow.
- Check the displayed quality during playback. Recheck after changing the video, device, or network.
YouTube describes Data saver as lower picture quality. Higher picture quality uses more data and may take longer to start or buffer more often. For a lecture made mostly of speech, lower resolution may be acceptable; slides, equations, or small on-screen text may require a higher setting for legibility. The right choice is the lowest one you can comfortably use.
YouTube’s controls and labels vary by platform, and Advanced may not be available for every video. The player may also behave differently across app and device versions. YouTube’s guidance for Android is at Change the quality of your video.
Set a lower default on Android
- Tap your profile picture.
- Go to Settings > Video quality preferences.
- Choose Data saver for mobile networks and Wi-Fi, or choose Advanced and a low resolution where available.
The preference menu also offers Auto and Higher picture quality. A default preference is useful, but verify the quality in the player when a long session begins; the available controls and resulting quality are not guaranteed to be identical for every video or device.

How to check your actual use over a long session
Data use accumulates for as long as video plays, but the total depends on playback quality and the stream representation YouTube delivers. No universal 24-hour or per-hour total is established for this lecture, so avoid treating a generic estimate as a promise.
- Note the device’s or carrier’s data counter before a representative playback interval.
- Play the lecture at the quality you intend to use and confirm that quality in the player.
- After a practical interval, compare the counter. Use the measured rate as a planning guide for your own device, network, and video—not as a guaranteed figure for other sessions.
- If the measured use is still too high, lower the quality and repeat the check; if slides become hard to read, choose a more legible setting and account for the greater use.
Keep viewer settings separate from live-stream settings
This is a recorded lecture being watched continuously. YouTube’s live encoder settings configure a creator’s incoming broadcast; they do not let a viewer reduce the data used to watch an already-recorded video. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that is a separate stage from the quality selection in your player. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Similarly, low latency is a live-broadcast delay setting, not a data-saving control for a recording. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes low latency in terms of how soon video becomes visible to viewers.

If the goal is to keep uploaded lecture videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than watch a recording on a device, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. This does not change the data used by a device watching the stream; it removes the need to keep your own computer running the broadcast. Try StreamNeo free.
