How to Configure OBS Retry Delay and Maximum Retries for YouTube Streaming

Set OBS Automatic Reconnect in Settings → Advanced, learn how retry waits increase, and troubleshoot the network problems retries cannot fix.

In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced and find Automatic Reconnect. Enable it, set Retry Delay for the initial wait in seconds, then set Maximum Retries for how many attempts OBS should make. OBS doubles the wait after each retry, so Retry Delay is not a fixed interval. These controls can help OBS recover from a brief interruption, but they cannot repair an unstable internet connection or guarantee recovery from every YouTube-side interruption.

Configure OBS automatic reconnect

  1. Open the Advanced settings. In OBS Studio, select Settings → Advanced, then locate Automatic Reconnect. The exact labels or layout may vary by OBS release; the OBS Overview Guide identifies Automatic Reconnect as an Advanced setting.
  2. Enable automatic reconnect. Turn on the reconnect option if it is disabled.
  3. Set Retry Delay. Enter the starting wait, in seconds, before OBS attempts to reconnect. The OBS output API documents that this wait doubles on each retry to avoid overloading services. For example, if the starting delay is 2 seconds, the documented sequence of waits grows rather than remaining at 2 seconds; actual recovery depends on the connection and service.
  4. Set Maximum Retries. Enter how many attempts OBS should make before it stops retrying. In the documented output API, a value of zero disables reconnecting. Choose a limit that gives a short-lived outage time to clear without treating repeated retries as a fix for a persistent problem.
  5. Apply and test before broadcasting. Save the settings and test your stream operation before going live, as the OBS overview recommends. Do not rely on reconnect behavior for the first time during an important broadcast.

The official OBS overview confirms where reconnect settings live, but does not establish a current default-value table for the GUI. Use the values shown in your installed release as your starting point rather than assuming a particular default.

What the two settings mean

Setting What it controls Practical effect
Retry Delay The initial wait before a reconnect attempt, in seconds. OBS’s output API says the retry wait doubles on each retry. A longer starting delay means OBS waits longer before its first attempt; later waits increase. It is not a promise of the same pause between every attempt.
Maximum Retries The cap on reconnect attempts. The OBS output API documents that zero disables reconnecting. A higher limit lets OBS continue attempting for longer, but does not make an unreliable route stable.

There is no universally correct retry delay or maximum count established for YouTube streaming. The right balance depends on how much interruption you can tolerate and whether the cause is transient. OBS describes the retry interval as doubling on each retry to prevent overloading services.

Why retries may not restore a YouTube stream

OBS treats reconnect as recovery behavior, not a network repair. Its troubleshooting guide explains that dropped frames can mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames may disconnect the output. Intermittent disconnections are typically caused by network conditions outside OBS’s control. A reconnect setting cannot resolve congestion, packet loss, weak Wi-Fi, inadequate sustained upload, or a service-side problem.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The official OBS sources do not establish a YouTube-specific recommended retry delay, the current default values for these GUI fields, or a guarantee that YouTube will resume every event seamlessly after an encoder reconnect. Avoid treating any particular retry value as a YouTube rule.

Troubleshoot repeated disconnects

  • Check sustainable upload capacity. OBS suggests using a bitrate around 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point. This is a general OBS suggestion, not a guaranteed YouTube setting: use stable upload performance and the platform’s applicable limits, and lower the video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it.
  • Prefer Ethernet over Wi-Fi where practical. OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. A cable can reduce one source of instability, but it will not fix every network problem.
  • Look for software interference. OBS lists security software, VPNs, and network-optimization software among possible factors. Review whether any of them is affecting OBS’s connection.
  • Check drivers and network hardware. Update relevant drivers and consider the router and other network hardware as potential causes, following OBS’s troubleshooting guidance.
  • Consider the service and route. If local connection checks do not explain the interruption, the issue may involve the route to the ingest server or service conditions rather than OBS’s retry controls.

Change one likely cause at a time, then test again so you can tell whether the change helped. Increasing Maximum Retries alone may only keep OBS attempting for longer while the underlying issue persists.

Keep YouTube settings organized with OBS Profiles

If you switch between streaming services or configurations, an OBS Profile can keep stream and output settings organized. OBS’s Profiles guide describes profiles as a way to save those settings and gives a YouTube-specific profile as an example. This is optional; it does not change how retry backoff works.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos live on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving OBS running on a home computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery attempts to resume if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video on YouTube, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or start your free day.
