A full Linux filesystem could have disrupted your streaming process, but the timing alone does not prove it caused YouTube to stop receiving the broadcast. Compare the time the stream stopped with YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped health errors and your server and encoder logs. Then check both filesystem space and inodes, find what is consuming them, make room without destroying useful evidence, and restore the stream using the procedure for your setup.
First, establish what stopped and when
- Record the incident time and timezone. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the stream’s status and health information. Note whether YouTube reports the broadcast as ended, disconnected, or still receiving an encoder feed, and record any error timestamps. YouTube explains its live-stream error messages at Live streaming error messages.
- Check whether YouTube received the stream. If the broadcast remains active or reconnects, review the stream metrics as well as the health display: YouTube live-stream metrics.
- Compare that timeline with the Linux host. Inspect the streaming service’s logs, the encoder log if it runs separately, and the system journal around the recorded time. Look for failed writes, a process exit or restart, and network disconnects. If you use OBS, its connection troubleshooting guidance treats dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of an unstable connection to the remote ingest server—a possible explanation distinct from disk exhaustion.
A disk-full condition can interfere with software that needs to write logs, temporary data, or application state. But without matching log or health evidence, do not conclude it was the sole cause of the stopped stream.
Check filesystem space and inodes
Run these commands on the Linux host:
df -h
df -i
df -h reports filesystem capacity in human-readable units; df -i reports inode use. Inodes are the filesystem’s records for files and directories. A filesystem can run out of inodes—and thus be unable to create files—even while its byte capacity is not exhausted. The GNU df manual documents both reports.
Check the filesystems holding the streaming application’s logs, media or cache, temporary files, and service data—not just the root filesystem. If the service uses a separate mounted volume, a healthy / does not establish that the service’s own filesystem has room.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Find what is consuming storage before deleting anything
Start with a shallow directory scan on the affected filesystem. For GNU du, for example:
sudo du -xhd1 /var 2>/dev/null | sort -h
Replace /var with the relevant path. The -x option keeps the scan on that filesystem, while -d1 limits depth; flags differ on some systems, so check the installed du implementation. Repeat at a deeper level in the directory that stands out. The du manual describes its directory-tree usage estimates.

Treat the output as a locator, not an exact reconciliation with df. They measure usage differently, and a mismatch can have several explanations, including open-but-deleted files, mount boundaries, permissions, reserved space, or filesystem-specific behavior. These are possibilities to investigate, not established facts about your server.
Identify whether a large item is active media, application data, or retained logs before removing it. Deleting a file that a running process still has open may not free the expected space until that process closes it. Preserve logs needed to understand the interruption before rotating or removing them.

Inspect the system journal and control log growth
Check journal storage with:
journalctl --disk-usage
systemd-journald may store persistent journal data under /var/log/journal or volatile data under /run/log/journal, depending on configuration. Review the relevant entries around the outage before cleaning up. The journalctl manual documents journal inspection, rotation, and vacuum controls; the systemd-journald manual describes the service and its storage.
If the journal is consuming substantial space, retain what you need for diagnosis, then use supported rotation or vacuum controls intentionally. Vacuuming targets archived journal files; limits depend on journald configuration. Cleanup can reclaim room, but it does not fix a service that is continuously generating excessive logs.

Once you identify the source of ongoing growth, configure appropriate retention and rotation for that service. Logrotate supports time- or size-based rotation, compression, and removal according to configuration. Confirm the service’s logging setup before adding or changing rules.

- Free enough space—or resolve inode exhaustion—on the filesystems the streaming service must write to. Confirm the service can create files normally.
- Check the actual process and service state using the tools for your installation. There is no single restart command that applies to every encoder, supervisor, container, or server setup.
- If the process stopped, restart or reconnect it according to that setup. If it is still running, address the specific error in its logs rather than blindly restarting.
- Confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed and inspect the health display for new errors. If the stream drops again, compare its new timestamp with the server and encoder logs before deciding whether the cause is still storage-related.
YouTube’s error timeline can help distinguish an ingest problem from a local process failure; it cannot, by itself, establish what happened on your Linux host. If OBS is the encoder, use OBS’s connection guidance only for that part of the diagnosis.

Prevent the same failure from recurring
- Track both bytes and inodes. A byte-capacity alert alone can miss inode exhaustion.
- Monitor the relevant mount points. Include the filesystems used for logs, media, caches, temporary files, and service state.
- Set log retention deliberately. Find the service producing growing logs and configure rotation, compression, and retention appropriate to its needs.
- Keep enough diagnostic history. Avoid emergency cleanup that removes the only evidence of why the process stopped; balance retained logs against the volume’s capacity.
- Choose capacity changes based on the confirmed cause. Expanding a volume may help if its byte capacity is genuinely insufficient and it can be expanded. It will not necessarily fix inode exhaustion, runaway logging, or a network disconnect. Confirm the server type and filesystem before changing storage.
