YouTube Live Stream Limits: Scheduled Broadcasts vs. Active Streams

YouTube publishes limits for concurrent active streams, not a numeric cap for future scheduled broadcasts. Here’s how to distinguish them and resolve common errors.

YouTube’s published concurrency limits are 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; both apply at the same time. These are limits on streams running now, not a published maximum for future scheduled broadcasts. YouTube’s API does recognize that a channel can create too many live or scheduled broadcasts, but it does not publish a numeric schedule cap.

How many YouTube live streams can be active at once?

YouTube Help states that a channel can have up to 10 active streams, with a separate limit of 3 active streams per stream key. Because both constraints apply together, a channel that is under one limit can still be blocked by the other. For example, having fewer than 10 active streams overall does not permit starting a fourth active stream on a key already carrying three. See YouTube’s Get started with live streaming guidance.

These figures refer to active streams. They do not say how many future events a channel may schedule.

Is there a limit on scheduled YouTube broadcasts?

YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents the userBroadcastsExceedLimit error. Its description says the user has created too many live or scheduled broadcasts and should stop or delete some. This confirms that a broadcast-creation limit can be reached, but the API documentation gives no numeric maximum for scheduled events and no reset interval. It is therefore not accurate to describe scheduled broadcasts as unlimited or to state a specific schedule cap.

The error is documented on the API’s LiveBroadcasts: insert method.

Why YouTube’s stream and broadcast counts differ

A broadcast represents the event viewers watch, while a stream carries transmission settings for sending video to YouTube. They are related API resources, but they do not mean the same thing. The distinction matters when interpreting a schedule or diagnosing an error: a count of active transmissions is not the same as a count of scheduled event resources.

YouTube’s API guide describes a recurring-event workflow in which multiple broadcast resources can be bound to one reusable stream when the events share transmission settings and take place at different times. That is a way to reuse a stream configuration; it does not establish that reuse bypasses any YouTube limit. Details are in the YouTube Live Streaming API guide to broadcasts and streams and its implementation guide.

What to check when YouTube blocks a stream or event

If you cannot start another stream

  • Count streams that are active now on the channel. YouTube Help’s stated channel limit is 10 active streams.
  • Count active streams using the specific stream key. The stated limit is 3 per key.
  • Check both counts: reaching either limit is sufficient to prevent another stream from starting.

If the API returns userBroadcastsExceedLimit

The API error directs the user to stop or delete some broadcasts. It does not specify how many to remove or when the ability to create broadcasts will return, so neither a particular deletion count nor a reset time can be promised.

If the API rejects a scheduled event

Before treating the problem as a count limit, check that the request includes a title, a scheduled start time in the future, and a privacy status. The start time must also be close enough to the current date for YouTube to schedule reliably. YouTube’s insert-method documentation lists permission errors separately, including insufficient live permissions and a live-permission block. These validation and permission issues are distinct from the broadcast-count error.

For channel eligibility, YouTube Help says live streaming requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. See YouTube’s live streaming requirements.

Keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 is a separate problem

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a continuous YouTube stream, a service cannot remove YouTube’s account-side broadcast or active-stream limits. StreamNeo is a cloud option for running an uploaded-video stream, not a way around YouTube’s limits.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it accepts video up to 4K 60fps as uploaded at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and offers the first day free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera. Visit StreamNeo or start your free day.
