Preview the feed in YouTube Studio before going live and monitor it while it runs. This loops playback on the streaming computer; it does not guarantee that the YouTube broadcast itself will stay live indefinitely.
Before you set up the stream
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check eligibility before planning a church broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Get permission for the songs and recordings
Make sure the church has the rights needed for each recording and for its use in both the live feed and any resulting archive. The required permissions depend on the recording, rights holders, territories, and intended use. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for necessary rights on the person providing the live content, including relevant music licensing rights.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can lead to a warning, a placeholder replacing the picture, interruption, or termination. For licensed material, a rights holder may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist; permission alone does not ensure that a stream will avoid interruption. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and ask the rights holder about allowlisting where applicable.

Choose how to loop the songs in OBS
Use a VLC Video source when the broadcast should move through multiple files in a chosen order. For a single recording, a Media Source is simpler.

OBS documents both options in its Media Sources guide. A source’s loop setting repeats local playback; it does not reconnect OBS or restart a YouTube broadcast if either is disconnected.

Set up a looping playlist and connect YouTube
- Prepare the files. Use song recordings the church has permission to broadcast. Keep local copies on the streaming computer and arrange them in the desired play order.
- Add the playlist in OBS. Add a VLC Video source, add the local files to its playlist, and turn on Loop Playlist. Install VLC if needed; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. For just one file, add a Media Source and enable Loop instead.
- Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to the stream. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s stream-settings guidance.
- Check the feed before going live. Start the encoder and inspect the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that both the picture and audio are correct, then go live.
- Monitor the broadcast. Watch YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages, and keep an eye on OBS and the internet connection. Test the setup ahead of the service, not for the first time during it.
Choose stream settings your connection can sustain
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS encoder settings and recommends RTMPS. Follow its current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Choose a bitrate the church’s upload connection can sustain with headroom, rather than setting it at the connection’s theoretical maximum. Test the outbound connection and stream before the broadcast; interruptions can break the feed. YouTube also provides streaming tips.
Plan for the limits of a continuous broadcast
A playlist can keep cycling while OBS and the source are running, but playback looping is different from keeping one YouTube broadcast live without interruption. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive guidance is not a promise that an individual stream can remain live forever. Plan a human check-in and a deliberate restart or broadcast schedule rather than assuming a loop runs indefinitely. See YouTube’s encoder live-stream instructions.

If a broadcast stops, check YouTube Studio for restrictions or copyright notices before restarting. Resolve rights or policy problems first; restarting without addressing them may not help. YouTube’s live-stream restriction guidance explains possible restrictions.

- The playlist stops after the last song: Check that the source is a VLC Video playlist and that Loop Playlist is enabled. For a single Media Source, enable Loop.
- OBS cannot use the VLC source: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, OBS specifies installing 64-bit VLC.
- YouTube shows no incoming feed: Confirm OBS has the correct stream URL and key, that the encoder has been started, and that the YouTube preview is receiving video. Reset an exposed key in Live Control Room.
- The feed is unstable or drops: Check stream health and the outbound upload connection. Reduce settings to a resolution and bitrate the connection can sustain, with headroom, and test again.
- The picture or audio is wrong: Inspect the Live Control Room preview and test the actual files and audio path before going live.
- YouTube interrupts or terminates the stream: Check for copyright notices, restrictions, or strikes. Resolve the issue with the relevant rights holder or YouTube before restarting; a local playlist loop cannot prevent a rights-related interruption.
