To recover from a crash, use an external watchdog or operating-system launcher to start OBS again, optionally with the --startstreaming launch parameter. Test the complete recovery path before relying on it for a live podcast.
First identify what stopped: OBS or the stream connection
If OBS is still open and only the stream output has disconnected, configure OBS’s built-in automatic reconnect and troubleshoot the connection. If OBS has exited, automatic reconnect cannot help: it runs inside OBS, so another process must detect the exit and launch OBS again.
OBS documents automatic reconnect in its Overview Guide. For dropped frames or an unstable connection between your computer and the ingest server, follow the separate Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance. Repeatedly restarting OBS will not repair a failing network path.
Set up recovery for an OBS process crash
The recovery chain has two separate parts: an external supervisor restarts the OBS process, and an OBS launch parameter can tell the newly launched instance to start streaming. OBS documents launch parameters and automated launches, but does not prescribe one universal watchdog setup for every operating system.

1. Choose what should happen when OBS opens
Decide whether a restarted instance should merely open OBS or immediately go live. If you want it to begin streaming as soon as it launches, OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter. This does not verify that your podcast is ready, that the selected scene is correct, or that YouTube accepted the stream.
OBS launch parameters can also select a profile, scene collection, or scene. Use these options when your recovery launch needs a particular setup; check the OBS Launch Parameters guide for the supported parameters and syntax.

2. Configure a supervisor outside OBS
Use an operating-system scheduler, watchdog, or other process supervisor that can notice when OBS exits and launch it again. Configure it to start OBS with the parameters you chose. The exact setup depends on your operating system and how you run OBS; the OBS guide describes automated launching but is not a complete cross-platform crash-recovery recipe.
Set the launcher’s working directory to the folder containing the OBS executable. OBS specifically calls out the working directory for scheduled or otherwise automated launches. Without the correct directory, an automated start may behave differently from opening OBS normally.

3. Add safeguards before enabling unattended restarts
- Add a short delay before relaunching and use bounded retries. These are prudent safeguards, not a universal interval specified by OBS.
- Prevent duplicate instances so a slow launch does not trigger overlapping OBS processes.
- Log restart attempts and outcomes so you can distinguish a crash loop from a successful recovery.
- Decide whether someone must confirm the scene, microphone, recording, and destination before going live. Automatic launch does not establish that the broadcast is safe to resume.
- Check your operating system’s login-session and GPU requirements. The OBS guidance does not establish one cross-platform method for launching reliably behind a locked desktop or service session.
Use OBS WebSocket for monitoring or control, not process relaunch
OBS WebSocket can let an external controller monitor or control a running OBS instance, but it cannot relaunch OBS after the process has stopped; the watchdog still needs to run outside OBS. OBS WebSocket is included by default beginning with OBS Studio 28.0.0. Its protocol includes output-state events such as stopped, reconnecting, and reconnected.
The OBS Project’s Remote Control Guide describes WebSocket as a way to automate or control scenes and sources with external tools. Protect the interface with authentication and a password: the OBS Project’s obs-websocket README recommends password protection against unauthorized control. Do not expose an unauthenticated control interface.

Troubleshoot failed recovery
- OBS stays open, but the stream drops: Configure OBS automatic reconnect and investigate the network-to-server path rather than treating this as a process crash.
- OBS opens but does not stream: Confirm that the launch includes
--startstreamingif immediate streaming is intended, and check the selected OBS profile, scene collection, and scene. - The scheduled launch fails or behaves differently: Check the executable path and set the working directory to the folder containing the OBS executable.
- OBS restarts repeatedly: Use logs to identify the failure, limit retries, and avoid relaunching while an earlier instance is still starting. Restart loops will not resolve an underlying connection problem.
- The output reports dropped frames: OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance includes trying another server or lowering bitrate.
- The computer rebooted or lost power: A supervisor configured only for process exits may not cover startup after reboot. Configure and test the operating system’s startup behavior separately, including whether the required user session and graphics resources are available.
An OBS forum discussion from March 2024 considers startup-folder and scheduled-task approaches after a reboot, but it is community advice rather than a universal official procedure: “Autostart after e.g. Reboot”. Separately, a June 2026 forum post reports a crash under the specific conditions OBS Studio 32.1.2, Windows 11, SRT output, Stream Delay enabled, and network recovery before the first automatic reconnect attempt. That report does not establish a generally confirmed defect or a resolution: read the report.

Run a controlled test with the intended profile, scenes, microphone, destination, and launch settings. Verify that the supervisor detects an OBS exit, starts one instance from the expected working directory, and produces the intended output. Confirm the stream at YouTube rather than assuming that OBS launching or showing an active output proves the destination accepted it. Also test the reboot or login scenario separately if that is part of your recovery plan.
