Start by testing 1080p at 30 fps if your study scene includes text or desk details viewers need to read and your connection can reliably sustain YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate of 10 Mbps—with upload headroom. It is a practical starting point, not an official YouTube preset for study streams. If 720p keeps the stream more stable and the scene remains legible, use 720p instead. YouTube does not specify one best resolution for a 24/7 study stream, and a broadcast running longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Choose resolution by legibility and reliability
The right resolution is the lowest one that shows the useful parts of your study scene clearly without pushing your connection beyond what it can sustain. For a mostly static desk, notebook, timer, or ambient scene, 60 fps is often unnecessary; prioritize readable text and a steady stream over maximum resolution.
YouTube’s live encoder guide provides general settings rather than a study-stream-specific recommendation. Its H.264 bitrate figures below are platform recommendations for the stated resolution and frame rate, not guarantees about the minimum internet speed you need. Leave bandwidth headroom and test on the network that will carry the stream. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance can change, so check it again before configuring a new broadcast.
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | When it may suit a study stream |
|---|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | Lower-bandwidth option; confirm that notes, a timer, or other text remain readable. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | Use when motion benefits from the higher frame rate; a static scene may not. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | A useful first test when viewers need to see notes or desk details. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | More motion detail, with greater bitrate demand. |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | More detail if the source and viewing experience justify the extra bandwidth. |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | High detail and motion; usually difficult to justify for a static scene. |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 4K where the source detail warrants the higher stream and recording demands. |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | The highest listed combination here; choose it only for a specific quality need. |
YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for different devices, so you do not need to send a separate encode for every viewer’s screen. The available bitrate recommendations also vary by codec: consult the encoder guide if using AV1 or H.265 rather than H.264.

Should you use 1080p or 720p?
Choose 1080p at 30 fps when text or fine details are important and your upload connection can sustain the recommended 10 Mbps H.264 rate with headroom. Choose 720p when lower bandwidth is more reliable or when the scene remains clear at viewers’ likely screen sizes. A higher resolution is not automatically better if it causes buffering, dropped frames, or interruptions.
Compare candidate settings by checking the actual scene on a phone and desktop, then consider these factors together:

- Upload capacity: Can the connection sustain the selected bitrate with room for variation?
- Motion: Does the scene actually benefit from 60 fps?
- Viewing experience: Is low latency important, or is a stable, quiet stream the priority?
- Recording plan: Can you retain a local backup if the YouTube archive is incomplete?
Set bitrate, keyframes, and latency
For H.264, use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate in the table above. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These settings apply to the encoder sending the stream; confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s live encoder guide.
For a study stream without live interaction, start by testing normal latency. YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more buffering and is less important when the creator is not interacting with viewers. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance for latency options and their current behavior.

Test the stream before leaving it on
- Check your upload connection. Run a speed test on the network you will use for streaming. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; treat a speed-test result as a planning input, not proof of round-the-clock stability. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Run a private or unlisted test. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a test stream and configure the encoder for your intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Use the stream key for that broadcast, keep it private or unlisted, and do not share the key.
- Use the real scene and audio. Include the same lighting, movement, overlays, and audio you expect in the long-running stream. Check text legibility on both a phone and a desktop display.
- Monitor stream health. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test. If delivery is unstable, lower the resolution or bitrate and test again rather than relying on a short speed test alone.
- Verify a local recording. If you plan to keep a backup, confirm that the recording file is growing and can be played. YouTube recommends checking the local archive’s growth and integrity in its live streaming tips.
Plan for archives, DVR, and a true 24/7 broadcast
“Recorded” needs a qualification for a continuous stream: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; its note that 1440p and 2160p streams are automatically archived is not a guarantee that a 24-hour broadcast will be preserved. If the replay matters, use shorter sessions and make a local recording. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.
There is no supported storage-size figure that fits every creator: the space required depends on the recording bitrate, codec, and how long you keep files. Estimate storage from your own recording settings and retention period, then make a plan to rotate, check, and retain files. A live stream appearing on YouTube does not prove that a local backup is being written.

DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream began. Disabling DVR prevents seeking while the stream is live, though a recording may still become available later. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

- Text is hard to read: Check the scene at the viewer’s screen size. If the connection can sustain it, test 1080p at 30 fps; otherwise simplify or enlarge the text, or keep 720p if it remains legible.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: Check stream health and available upload capacity. Reduce resolution or bitrate until delivery is stable, then retest with headroom rather than aiming for the highest possible setting.
- 60 fps adds no visible benefit: For a mostly static scene, test 30 fps. YouTube’s recommended H.264 rates are lower for 30 fps than for the corresponding 60 fps setting.
- The stream is live but no local file appears: Check that local recording is enabled and that the file is growing. Verify the recording after the test; do not treat the YouTube broadcast itself as a local backup.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter sessions and a local archive if preserving the full content is important.
- Viewers cannot rewind far enough: Long streams may have limited or unavailable DVR, and DVR never provides access to before the broadcast began. Set expectations accordingly or use shorter sessions.
