You can keep a recorded nursing course running as a YouTube Live stream by sending prerecorded video through a hardware encoder or cloud streaming service. First enable YouTube Live, create a stream in YouTube Studio, and connect the encoder with the stream URL and key. Before launching a continuous feed, plan for YouTube’s archive limit, clear rights to every course asset, and decide whether the activity needs to meet nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) requirements.
Choose how to keep the course on air
A 24/7 prerecorded broadcast needs an encoder or service that can continuously send video to YouTube Live. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists both a hardware option and a cloud service as examples; these are third-party products, not YouTube products.

The practical choice depends on local equipment and staffing, scheduling and recovery needs, visibility into stream health, and how the broadcast will handle session archives. If learners may receive credit, the ability to verify individual participation is a separate requirement from keeping the video live.
Set up YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Check channel eligibility. Verify the channel and confirm it has no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until launch day. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. YouTube’s encoder guide explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming. Follow the stream setup prompts to obtain the stream URL and stream key. - Protect the stream key. Enter the URL and key in the encoder or service, and give access only to the people and systems that need it. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to the stream.
- Configure prerecorded playback. Load the course video or playlist into a workflow that supports continuous prerecorded playback. Confirm the order, transitions, audio, and any captions or learner instructions in the actual player. Available source guidance identifies scheduling as a product capability for the named examples, but it does not establish one universal encoder configuration or bitrate.
- Start a test broadcast. Start the encoder and check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before going live to learners. Test the full path, including audio, captions, the learner-facing page, and what happens after a restart or dropped connection.
- Go live and monitor the first cycle. Confirm that the public or unlisted viewing page behaves as intended and that the video continues into the next item or loop. Keep an operator responsible for checking the broadcast rather than assuming a successful preview proves continuous operation.
Plan sessions and YouTube archives
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for streams longer than 12 hours. A single 24/7 broadcast therefore needs an explicit recording and archive plan rather than an assumption that YouTube will preserve a complete replay.

- Consider shorter sessions and test the handoff between them before launch.
- If a separate recording workflow is needed, decide where the recording will be stored and how learners will access it.
- Test any transition for gaps, duplicate playback, and loss of the learner-facing link. Do not treat archive behavior beyond YouTube’s stated under-12-hour case as guaranteed.
Clear course rights and YouTube policy
Before broadcasting, confirm that the course operator has permission for all included slides, music, photographs, video clips, and recorded voices. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the live broadcast or the stream to be interrupted or terminated. Even if the operator has a license, a rights holder may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist to prevent an interruption. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
The stream must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Keep documentation of permissions and resolve any Content ID allowlisting issue with the relevant rights holder before relying on licensed material in a continuous broadcast.

Decide whether the course can award nursing contact hours
A public YouTube stream does not, by itself, award nursing continuing education contact hours. In the United States, ANCC’s NCPD requirements describe eligible activities as addressing a knowledge, skill, or practice gap for professional registered nurses, using evidence or best-available evidence, and being planned independently from ineligible-company influence. ANCC describes routes that include becoming an accredited provider, becoming an approved provider through an accredited approver, or obtaining approval for an individual activity. Confirm the course operator’s actual status and the applicable accreditor’s requirements before advertising contact hours. See the ANCC NCPD FAQ.
A continuously looping public stream may also make it difficult to demonstrate who participated, for how long, or whether they completed the learning activity. If credit is offered, plan learner engagement, evaluation, completion verification, and contact-hour criteria appropriate to the activity format; video availability alone is not evidence of an individual learner’s completion.

If you offer the recording as an enduring activity
ANCC defines enduring material as an on-demand, learner-paced activity: the participant chooses whether and when to complete it. Its 2025 NCPD provider manual says enduring activity content must be reviewed at least once every three years, or sooner when developments require, and the expiration date cannot exceed three years. ANCC also treats a live recording offered to a new learner group as a new activity; engagement, evaluation, and contact-hour criteria should suit that format. These provisions should not automatically be equated with every continuously looping YouTube feed. Confirm the provider’s interpretation and tracking method. Troubleshoot common launch problems
