How to Use a YouTube Stream Key for a 24/7 Lecture Stream in OBS

Connect OBS to YouTube Live with the right stream URL and key, then test the computer, source, network, publishing steps, and archive plan needed for a continuous lecture stream.

To stream a lecture from OBS to YouTube, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enter them in OBS, then start the encoder and confirm the preview. A stream key authorizes OBS to send video to YouTube; it does not keep your computer, lecture source, power, or internet connection running. A dependable 24/7 broadcast needs those pieces—and a recovery plan—to stay available.

Before you start: make sure the channel can go live

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  • First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast.
  • Have the lecture video or live production ready, plus a stable internet connection and a computer that can remain on if you are encoding locally.

You do not need to buy a microphone or other hardware just to configure a stream key. For a live lecture, a microphone can be a useful audio source; YouTube also notes that expensive equipment is not necessary.

Connect OBS to your YouTube stream

  1. Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. On the Stream tab, create a stream or select the one you intend to use. You can reuse settings or create a custom reusable key.
  2. Copy the stream URL and key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with viewers.
  3. Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, select YouTube as the service if that option is available, then enter the key. If configuring the encoder manually, put YouTube’s stream URL in the server field and the key in the stream-key field. OBS labels and menus can differ by version.
  4. Start the encoder. Choose Start Streaming in OBS. Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Check picture and audio before publishing.
  5. Publish the event if needed. For a scheduled stream, the encoder feed and the public event can be separate actions. If the stream’s settings require it, click Go live in Live Control Room after confirming the preview. Check the event’s auto-start settings rather than assuming that starting OBS publishes it automatically.
  6. End the broadcast cleanly. Follow the event controls in YouTube Studio when ending the published stream, then stop the OBS encoder as appropriate for that workflow.

Keep the URL and key paired with the intended stream. If you think a key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in OBS. Only channel owners or managers can reset a key.

What makes a lecture stream stay up around the clock

The key only lets YouTube accept the encoder feed. For a local OBS setup, continuous operation also depends on the OBS process, the lecture source, the computer, power, and network service. YouTube does not promise 24/7 uptime from OBS or a stream key, so test the complete setup and decide who or what will respond to a failure.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Test the whole chain before relying on it

  • Run the exact OBS scene and source you plan to use, including audio, for a realistic test.
  • Test recovery behavior by simulating an interruption, such as stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting Ethernet, and check whether the stream returns as expected.
  • Check that any local archive file is growing, if you are recording locally.
  • Open the watch page on desktop and mobile, and monitor audio and video quality.
  • Confirm the behavior of the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings before relying on encoder start and stop actions alone.

These checks help reveal failure points; they are not a guarantee that an unattended stream cannot drop.

Schedule, latency, and archive decisions

Scheduled events and publication

A scheduled event can provide a watch URL and reminders in advance. YouTube’s encoder workflow calls for starting the encoder, waiting for the preview, then publishing with Go live when the event settings require it. Confirm whether auto-start is enabled for the specific stream and whether a person must approve publication.

Latency and DVR

YouTube offers latency settings and DVR. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, and YouTube says it matters less when the stream is not interactive. DVR lets viewers pause and rewind. For a lecture intended for study, weigh those viewer needs against playback reliability rather than automatically choosing the lowest latency.

Plan for broadcasts longer than 12 hours

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single stream longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete video. For a 24/7 channel, plan deliberate stream segments or a separate local recording and archive process, and verify current Studio behavior before launch.

Choose an operating method for the lecture

Method Best fit What to account for
OBS on a local computer A lecture with scenes, screen sharing, or locally connected audio/video sources, when you can keep the setup operating. The computer, OBS, source, power, and internet all need to keep working; test monitoring and recovery.
Encoder software or hardware Productions using screen sharing, external audio/video hardware, or more advanced setups. YouTube lists third-party products but does not make them; evaluate which fits your production and operating needs.
Cloud or continuous-streaming service Unattended streaming of prerecorded material or more complex video-processing workflows. YouTube’s encoder list includes Gyre for continuous streaming of prerecorded videos and AWS Elemental MediaLive for broadcast-grade live-video processing. Neither is established as necessary for a straightforward OBS setup.
