To run a 24/7 ocean waves meditation livestream on YouTube with FFmpeg, prepare a rights-cleared video-and-audio loop, activate live streaming for your channel, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, and send the loop to YouTube’s ingest server with your stream key. Test it before announcing the broadcast, then monitor the stream and plan how to restart FFmpeg if the connection drops. A local FFmpeg setup depends on the computer, power, and internet connection staying available.
Before you start: check channel access and media rights
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and its encoder setup guide.
Use audio and visuals licensed for the whole use
Use your own ocean recording and visuals, or media whose license expressly permits continuous public livestreaming, looping, and any archive you intend to keep. Save the license and confirm whether it allows monetization or edited/combined versions if those matter to you. “Royalty-free” by itself does not establish those rights. For licensed third-party material, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist: YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches, and a license alone may not prevent an interruption. Prepare a seamless ocean loop
Make one audiovisual file that can repeat for the duration of the broadcast. Before encoding, listen to the beginning-to-end transition on headphones and watch the visual transition. An audible swell, abrupt cut, or flash at the join will repeat throughout the stream; fix the edit in your source file rather than expecting FFmpeg to hide it.

- Choose a resolution and frame rate suited to the visual. For a mostly static meditation scene, 1080p30 is often sufficient; this is a practical recommendation, not a YouTube requirement. Audio-only ambience does not need 4K.
- Keep the audio level clean and consistent, without clipping or distracting changes between the end and start of the file.
- Check that the source file plays from beginning to end and that the installed FFmpeg build supports its codecs.
- Keep a separate copy of the original recording and the media license details.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. Create a live stream, or schedule it if you want a listing before broadcast. Choose visibility appropriate for your test; private or unlisted lets you verify the feed before promoting it.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. FFmpeg needs both values to publish to the correct YouTube stream. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public post, screenshot, repository, or shared command transcript.
- Review the stream details and preview. Confirm the intended stream is selected in Live Control Room and that its title, description, visibility, and schedule are correct before starting the encoder. Follow YouTube’s encoder instructions for the current Studio interface.
Choose FFmpeg output settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds; and RTMPS for encrypted ingest. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s current settings table lists 14 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate. Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain with headroom; a bitrate that regularly saturates the connection can make the live feed unstable. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
The command below is an illustrative starting pattern for a single prepared file. It has not been tested against your media or FFmpeg build. Replace the ingest host and key locally with the exact values shown in YouTube Studio, and adapt bitrate and frame rate to the source and connection. The example’s 6 Mbps video setting is below YouTube’s listed 14 Mbps recommendation for H.264 at 1080p30; it is not a match for that recommendation.

-f flv "rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST/STREAM_KEY"Here -re reads the file at its normal playback rate, -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping, and -g 60 at 30 frames per second sets a two-second GOP/keyframe interval. The RTMPS destination must use the actual YouTube server URL and stream key; do not publish a real key or leave it in logs or shell history accessible to others. Check your installed FFmpeg documentation and test the exact command and input file before relying on it.
Test, go live, and keep watch
- Start with a private or unlisted test using audio and motion representative of the real stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring its stream health and messages.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the selected stream is the one you intended and that YouTube receives a stable signal.
- Listen for clipping, silence, level changes, and the loop seam. Watch for visual stutters or unintended transitions.
- Check the connection and stream health while the test runs. If the feed is unstable, reduce output quality or bitrate to a level the available upload connection can sustain, then test again.
- Only after the test is acceptable, make the stream public or announce it to viewers.
Plan for disconnects and archives
A local FFmpeg process can stop because of a network interruption, host shutdown, or process failure. Arrange a way to notice and restart it—such as monitoring the process and YouTube stream state, or using a process supervisor configured for your system. FFmpeg documents reconnect options for supported protocol inputs, including retry and delay controls; its reconnect_at_eof option treats end-of-file as an error for live or endless input. These input-protocol options do not establish that every RTMPS output disconnect will resume seamlessly. Verify behavior with your own setup and check YouTube’s state after any restart. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24-hour broadcast therefore should not be assumed to produce one complete automatic archive under that rule. If keeping a full-day recording matters, plan and test a separate recording and storage workflow, and make sure your media rights cover the resulting copy.

FAQ
Can I use ocean sounds I found online?
Only if the rights actually cover continuous public livestreaming and any archive you plan to retain. Check the license and any Content ID allowlisting requirement before broadcasting.
Can a 24-hour livestream give me one complete YouTube archive?
Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for that: the encoder guidance states the automatic archive rule for streams under 12 hours. Arrange a separately tested recording workflow if a complete day is important.
