A Chennai VPS is not guaranteed to receive YouTube video from a nearby cache or over a short, uncongested route. First check whether playback buffers only on the VPS, then compare quality and connection. If the VPS path is the problem, give your provider time-stamped route, packet-loss, and throughput evidence so it can investigate its upstream routing and peering.
First identify where YouTube is playing
The right fix depends on what “on a VPS” means in your setup. You might be watching YouTube in a browser running on the VPS, or the VPS might relay a stream to a separate viewer. Those setups use different network paths. Record which one applies before changing settings or asking your host to investigate.
- Browser on the VPS: YouTube playback travels from Google’s video-serving infrastructure to the VPS, then to your remote desktop or viewing device. Buffering could arise on either leg.
- VPS relaying video: The VPS receives video and sends it onward. The route from YouTube to the VPS and the VPS’s outbound route to the viewer are separate things to check.
If you are simply watching YouTube on a local device while connected to a VPS for another purpose, the VPS may not be carrying the video traffic at all.
Try YouTube’s basic playback checks
YouTube’s official troubleshooting guidance recommends trying a different internet connection and manually adjusting playback quality when a video buffers or loads poorly. See YouTube’s video playback troubleshooting steps.

- Note the video, time, selected quality, and whether buffering is continuous or intermittent.
- Manually choose a lower quality and see whether playback becomes steady. If it does, the available throughput on at least one part of the playback path may not be keeping up with the selected quality.
- Try the same video over a genuinely different connection, such as a separate internet connection or another VPS location if available. Keep the video and quality as similar as possible.
- Compare results. If the problem occurs only when playback uses the Chennai VPS, focus on its network path. If it also occurs on other connections, the VPS location alone is unlikely to explain it.
A generic speed test can be useful context, but a fast result does not prove that the route carrying YouTube video is healthy during the buffering period.
Why a Chennai location does not guarantee a nearby YouTube route
Google says cacheable, high-volume YouTube content may be served from a local Google Global Cache (GGC) node, or from Google core locations through peering and transit. Google chooses a serving location based primarily on overall application performance, while also considering demand, capacity, maintenance, legal requirements, and DNS resolver configuration. Its Content Served documentation says ICMP ping latency is not an accurate measure of application performance for that decision and is not used to select the serving location.

Google’s Media CDN cache-location documentation lists Chennai as a point of presence, but says active locations can change without notice. That documents Google edge presence in the city; it does not establish that a particular YouTube request from your VPS uses that point of presence, or that the video is cached there.
Google explains that its edge points of presence connect its network to the wider internet through peering, and that GGC nodes can temporarily cache popular content, including YouTube, inside ISP networks. The interconnection between a VPS host and Google’s network can therefore matter. But Google’s peering infrastructure overview does not reveal the route used by an unnamed VPS provider.

Likewise, Google’s Cloud Interconnect provider list names DE-CIX and Equinix in Chennai for Cloud Interconnect. That is not evidence that a particular VPS company uses either provider or has a specific YouTube peering arrangement. See Google’s supported Cloud Interconnect providers.
Gather evidence if the buffering follows the VPS
If playback is consistently worse through the Chennai VPS than through a separate connection, collect evidence during the actual buffering period. A single ping result cannot identify the cache serving a video or establish how the application performs.

- Record the date and time, video, selected quality, VPS location, playback setup, and whether buffering is constant or intermittent.
- Measure sustained throughput while the problem is happening, not only in a separate speed test. Note the tool and test destination.
- Collect route and packet-loss observations to relevant Google or YouTube endpoints. Include the destination and time with the results. Treat ICMP measurements as clues about the observed network path, not as proof of YouTube’s serving location or video performance.
- Where possible, compare the same test from another network or VPS location. Note whether the problem changes by provider, route, or time of day.
Ask the VPS provider targeted questions
Send the provider your timestamps, route observations, packet-loss evidence, and sustained throughput results. Ask it to investigate—not assume—that an upstream path issue is present.
- Is there outbound congestion or packet loss affecting the route during the reported times?
- Which transit and peering paths carry traffic toward the affected Google or YouTube endpoints, and have those paths changed?
- Could the public IP or its announced prefix be routed differently from other addresses or locations the provider offers?
- Can support compare the route and performance with another VPS location or network?
No provider, instance IP, route trace, or performance measurements are available here, so a particular host or interconnection cannot be identified as the cause. Avoid switching providers based only on a city label or a ping number; compare sustained throughput, packet loss, route stability, and results during the hours when the buffering occurs.

Check for a regional incident, but verify its dates
Google Cloud Service Health documented a June 2026 incident involving traffic originating from Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, and surrounding areas, with intermittent elevated latency and possible packet loss. Its incident record says recovery was complete on June 26, 2026 PDT. This is historical context, not evidence that the incident is ongoing or that it caused an individual VPS’s buffering. Check Google’s incident record and current service-status information if symptoms are regional or time-dependent.
