Set it up with YouTube Live Control Room and OBS, then rehearse at the actual streaming location before going public. A 24/7 goal is not a guarantee: the laptop, power, network or YouTube connection can fail, so plan how to monitor and restart the broadcast.
Check YouTube live access before setting up
In YouTube Studio, confirm that live streaming is available for the channel and complete verification if prompted. YouTube’s current Help guidance says the channel must not have had a live-stream restriction during the preceding 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the intended start. Clear the rights to every part of the devotional stream
Use only music recordings, performances, artwork, photographs and video that you own or have permission to broadcast. A devotional subject, traditional melody or public-domain composition does not automatically make a modern recording or performance free to use. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content and may interrupt or end a broadcast. Even licensed material can trigger a match if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Confirm the rights and any allowlisting requirements with the owner before going live. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance describes this process.
Set up the laptop as an encoder
- Create the broadcast: Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. In Live Control Room, use the current encoder instructions and stream details shown for that broadcast.
- Install OBS: YouTube lists OBS among its software encoder options. OBS is open source and available at no charge, including for commercial use. Follow the current OBS download page for the version compatible with your laptop.
- Add the source: In OBS, create a simple scene with the devotional image or video and audio you have rights to use. A still image or low-motion loop, with few overlays and no unnecessary browser sources or animated effects, is a sensible starting point for older hardware.
- Connect the stream: Enter the stream details from YouTube’s Live Control Room in OBS, following YouTube’s current encoder instructions. Treat the stream key as a password: never publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Choose settings by testing: Run OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard, then test the resolution, frame rate and encoder settings it recommends on this specific laptop. There is no one bitrate or resolution that can be promised for every old machine. CPU demand varies with the encoder, output settings and scene complexity; OBS warns that system compatibility alone does not guarantee adequate streaming performance. Test upload stability where the stream will run
A speed-test result is only a snapshot; the key question is whether the connection in the laptop’s actual location can sustain the configured stream. Use TRAI MySpeed as one check, then run an extended private or unlisted rehearsal from the room and network you plan to use. Watch OBS’s dropped-frame indicators and YouTube’s stream health. OBS says rising dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one unable to sustain the configured bitrate. A wired connection is a prudent option when available, but no connection type is reliable in every location. National telecom statistics cannot establish the upload stability of your particular ISP, router, building or mobile signal.

Prepare power, cooling and restart arrangements
- Keep the laptop connected to its AC adapter and ensure vents are unobstructed.
- Set the operating system to avoid sleep and automatic shutdown during the broadcast; menu names vary by operating system and version.
- If short power interruptions are a concern, consider a UPS sized for the laptop adapter and the router or modem. Check the actual equipment load and expected runtime: a UPS cannot keep the stream online through an ISP or upstream-network outage.
- Before launch, rehearse what the operator will do after a power loss, laptop restart, OBS crash or internet outage. Decide who can restart the encoder and check in YouTube Studio that the broadcast is live again.
Keep YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and OBS status accessible to whoever is monitoring the stream. Check audio, stream health, rights notices and dropped frames during operation. A continuous broadcast needs an operator and recovery plan, not just an initial click on “Go Live.”
Choose how viewers will replay the stream
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, either schedule shorter sessions and verify the current archive behavior or make a local recording and confirm the laptop has enough storage and processing headroom. Recording locally adds machine load, so include it in the rehearsal. YouTube recommends a local recording backup for long streams; see its live-stream archive guidance.
