For repeatable unarmed attacks, consider Open Hand Monk/Thief; for a simpler martial character, Battle Master Fighter is easier to pilot. The ranking below is an editorial guide for a general campaign, not a measured tier list or an Honour Mode-only ranking. It weighs combat impact, survivability and party value, ease of piloting and leveling, and reliance on particular gear or a respec. Builds with exceptional burst do not automatically outrank safer or more versatile choices.
The list reflects Patch 8, which Larian described as its last major patch when it added 12 subclasses in April 2025. Platform hotfixes can still affect specific interactions, so check current behavior before committing to a mechanics-dependent multiclass. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement and current build guides offer useful context, but none establishes a shared scoring method, damage test, or Honour Mode completion rate for these twenty choices. PC Gamer’s build guide and HowToPlayHub’s Patch 8 ranking also prioritize different playstyles.
The 20 best BG3 builds, ranked
Splits below are included where the cited build guides give one. A strong eventual build can still have awkward early levels: use the trade-offs to judge both the destination and the journey, especially if you do not plan to respec.
| Rank and build | Why it ranks here—and what to consider |
|---|---|
1. Shadow Sorcerer / Paladin (Sorcadin) |
The strongest all-round candidate on this list: it can bring melee burst, Charisma-based magic, and useful party spells to the same character. HowToPlayHub ranks a Sorcadin first, and PC Gamer also covers a Paladin/Sorcerer combination. The exact level split changes the balance between martial features and higher-level spellcasting, so choose it for the role you want rather than treating one split as universally best. 2. Open Hand Monk / Thief Rogue |
A high-action unarmed attacker that combines Open Hand Monk features with Thief’s bonus-action flexibility. PC Gamer’s example is Monk 9 / Thief 3. Tavern Brawler and Strength-focused gearing or elixirs can materially shape the build, so its peak setup is not the same as its least gear-dependent version. PC Gamer’s progression and gear discussion. |
3. Berserker Barbarian / Thief / Fighter thrower |
A distinctive throwing build built around repeatable throws and extra bonus-action opportunities. PC Gamer gives Barbarian 5 / Thief 4 / Fighter 3; the mix is a deliberate trade between class features, not a free upgrade over staying in one class. Its effectiveness also depends more on the right throwing setup than a basic weapon build does. PC Gamer. |
4. College of Swords Bard / Fighter archer |
One of the broadest ranged packages: it can deal weapon damage while retaining Bard skills, spells, and control options. PC Gamer’s example is Swords Bard 10 / Fighter 2; its gear progression shifts from hand crossbows toward a longbow and spell-enhancing equipment. That progression makes the eventual build stronger than its earliest levels may suggest. PC Gamer. |
5. Gloomstalker Ranger / Assassin Rogue / Fighter |
A strong opener for players who like initiative and front-loaded ambush damage. HowToPlayHub lists Ranger 5 / Rogue 4 / Fighter 3. Its appeal depends on being able to exploit the opening of an encounter; it is not a claim that every fight will begin on those terms. HowToPlayHub’s multiclass guide. Special offer. 6. Hexblade Warlock |
Patch 8’s Hexblade gives Warlock a spellsword or ranged-hybrid identity without requiring a multiclass. PC Gamer discusses a pure Warlock 12 version and describes a Shadow Blade/Resonance Stone synergy. That combination is gear-dependent; do not confuse a powerful equipped version with the subclass’s baseline performance. Patch 8 subclass announcement; PC Gamer. |
7. Bladesinger Wizard / Oath of the Ancients Paladin |
A higher-complexity spell-and-blade hybrid for players who want defensive tools and versatility as well as weapon combat. PC Gamer presents Wizard 10 / Ancients Paladin 2 and emphasizes its buffs and flexible playstyle. It is a less direct recommendation if you mainly want easy, consistent damage. PC Gamer. |
8. Sorcerer / Warlock (Sorlock) |
A flexible Charisma-based caster that trades some class-specific progression for a mix of Sorcerer metamagic and Warlock options. HowToPlayHub lists Sorcerer 7 / Warlock 5. The split determines how much access you retain to each class’s features; decide whether metamagic, invocations, or Warlock progression matters most before leveling. HowToPlayHub. |
9. Paladin / Warlock (Lockadin) |
A Charisma-led martial caster that can combine Paladin durability and support with Warlock features. HowToPlayHub lists Paladin 5 / Warlock 7. Do not assume Extra Attack features from different classes stack: HowToPlayHub notes they do not, and any interaction-sensitive plan should be checked on the platform and patch you play. 10. Tempest Cleric / Storm Sorcerer |
A lightning-focused burst caster whose payoff comes from combining damage synergies and setup. HowToPlayHub gives Cleric 2 / Sorcerer 10. It can be potent when you plan the setup, but that added preparation and sequencing make it less straightforward than a caster that can simply act without arranging conditions first. HowToPlayHub. |
11. Death Domain Cleric / Circle of the Stars Druid |
A close-range area-caster concept that pairs the Patch 8 Death Domain with Stars Druid utility. PC Gamer details Cleric 10 / Druid 2. It is a flavorful hybrid with concentration and form choices to manage; it is better suited to players who enjoy overlapping spell and subclass systems than those seeking a simple attack loop. Larian’s Patch 8 subclass list; PC Gamer. |
12. Arcane Archer Fighter / War Priest |
A comparatively direct ranged martial build that uses Arcane Archer’s special arrows. PC Gamer gives Fighter 11 / War Priest 1 and calls Arcane Archer simple and effective. Fighter 11 is a major class-level breakpoint for its Improved Extra Attack, so dipping elsewhere means giving up part of the pure Fighter progression. Patch 8 introduced Arcane Archer; PC Gamer’s build. |
13. Swashbuckler Rogue / Hexblade Warlock |
A mobile melee character with a mix of martial and magical progression. PC Gamer’s example is Rogue 7 / Warlock 5. Watch the action economy: using a bonus action for one feature can compete with spending it on dual wielding. This one rewards planning each turn more than its swashbuckling theme might suggest. 14. Pure Battle Master Fighter |
A lower-complexity martial pick with tactical maneuvers and no multiclass leveling puzzle. It earns a place for reliable, flexible weapon combat rather than spell breadth or a highly specialized damage setup. PC Gamer contrasts its maneuver flexibility with Arcane Archer; specific feat and level recommendations depend on the character’s role. PC Gamer. |
15. Path of the Giant Barbarian thrower |
Patch 8’s Path of the Giant makes throwing central to the subclass, with Giant’s Rage and Tavern Brawler synergy highlighted by HowToPlayHub. It is an appealing alternative to the Berserker thrower above if you want a single subclass built around the theme. The guides cited here do not establish one definitive split or progression, so this is a playstyle recommendation, not a prescribed level plan. Patch 8 announcement; HowToPlayHub. |
16. Pure Bladesinger Wizard |
For players who want Patch 8’s melee-caster subclass without adding another class. Larian’s announcement describes Bladesong and its climactic ability, but the cited build guides do not establish a top-tier pure progression. It is included as a distinct playstyle pick, not as a claim that multiclassing is necessary or that this is a validated damage leader. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement. |
17. Shadow Magic Sorcerer |
A pure-caster alternative to the Sorcadin at rank 1. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement highlights teleportation and a Hound of Ill Omen, making Shadow Magic a distinct subclass choice even if you do not want a Paladin dip. Its inclusion here reflects those tools and playstyle, rather than a source-backed claim about comparative damage. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement. What’s actually slowing this PC down? 18. Circle of the Stars Druid |
A flexible, thematic Druid choice whose Starry Form offers combat and healing bonuses according to Larian’s Patch 8 announcement. It contributes a different mix of support and offense from the more burst-oriented entries above. It is ranked as a useful playstyle option; the cited sources do not provide a tested level plan or comparative ranking for a pure Stars build. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement. |
19. College of Glamour Bard |
A party-support and control choice, with Mantle of Inspiration and Mantle of Majesty among the features named in Larian’s Patch 8 announcement. Its strength is helping shape the party’s turns, not competing directly with the list’s most damage-focused builds. Choose it when protecting and enabling allies sounds more appealing than maximizing personal weapon or spell burst. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement. |
20. Oath of the Crown Paladin |
A protective, support-oriented Patch 8 Paladin option and an alternative for a party that values staying power. It belongs at the bottom of this damage-weighted general ranking, not because it is a proven weak subclass, but because the cited guides do not establish it as a top damage build. Consider it when keeping allies safer matters more than winning a burst comparison. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement. |
What multiclassing costs in BG3
BG3 removes tabletop ability-score prerequisites for multiclassing. Larian’s Community Update #21 puts it plainly: “We’ve removed Ability Score Prerequisites.” You choose a class at each level-up, and the game provides respec opportunities for experimenting. That freedom does not erase the cost of a split: class features, feats or ability improvements, and major combat breakpoints depend on levels in a particular class. Larian’s multiclassing overview.
- Count class levels, not just character level. PC Gamer notes that feats and ability improvements accrue by individual class level; several martial classes gain Extra Attack at class level 5, while Fighter’s Improved Extra Attack arrives at Fighter 11. A split can delay or forfeit those features.
- Do not count on Extra Attack stacking. HowToPlayHub warns that Extra Attack does not stack across classes. Check the specific split’s current behavior instead of assuming two class features create additional attacks.
- Full-caster spell slots are shared across multiclasses. That does not mean every class’s spells or other features progress as though you had stayed single-classed. PC Gamer’s multiclass guide explains the spell-slot rule; HowToPlayHub’s guide covers split and attack-feature trade-offs.
- Respec when the route is the problem. Because the game allows respecs, a build that feels weak or awkward during leveling need not lock you into a poor sequence. Rework the class order or split if the features you expected have not arrived when you need them. Larian describes respec opportunities in Community Update #21.
How to choose for Honour Mode
There is no evidence in the cited guides establishing win rates or survival percentages for these builds. A damage ranking is not automatically an Honour Mode ranking: reliable control, protection, and a smooth leveling curve can matter as much as peak burst. If Honour Mode is your priority, favor builds whose plan works at the levels you will actually play, and be cautious about choices that rely on a particular item, a narrow opening-round advantage, or an interaction you have not confirmed on your platform. The ranking above gives those considerations weight but does not claim to be an Honour Mode tier list.
Why the ranking is not universal
Patch 8 added twelve subclasses, one for each class, including Hexblade, Bladesinger, Shadow Magic, and Path of the Giant. That widened the set of viable character concepts, but it did not create a single best build for every party or difficulty. Some entries here are detailed progressions in current guides; the last five are deliberately framed as playstyle choices because the cited sources do not establish them as top-ranked, fully prescribed builds. Larian’s April 15, 2025 announcement; HowToPlayHub; PC Gamer.
