To run a podcast as a repeating YouTube Live broadcast, add your prepared audio or video to OBS, use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled, connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room with your stream key, and start the broadcast. VLC handles the playlist; OBS encodes and sends it. Your computer and internet connection must remain available while the stream runs.
Before you set up the stream
- Confirm that your YouTube channel can livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, and streamers must be at least 16. Check the channel’s Live Control Room for its current status. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements
- Install OBS and VLC. The OBS VLC Video source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources documentation
- Prepare the podcast files and any visual you intend to show. A prerecorded audio playlist with a static visual does not require a microphone, camera, capture card, or hardware encoder.
- Make sure you have rights to livestream every audio, video, and artwork item. Owning a copy, or using OBS and VLC, does not grant permission to rebroadcast someone else’s work. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance
Build a looping playlist in OBS
- Open OBS and create or select the scene for the broadcast. Add a visual source if you want viewers to see a cover image or other static artwork.
- In the Sources panel, select + → VLC Video Source. Create a new source, then open its properties. Add your podcast audio or video files to the playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist to restart playback at the end of the last item. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed episode order; enable it only if you want items played in a randomized order.
- Arrange the source and visual in the scene. For audio-only episodes, check that the scene still has a suitable visual for the live broadcast.
- Play the source and watch the OBS audio mixer. Confirm that the intended audio meter moves and that playback is audible in a short test. OBS’s quick-start guide covers selecting audio devices under Settings → Audio and checking mixer levels. OBS Quick Start Guide
For a single file that should repeat, OBS’s built-in Media Source can loop one local file. Choose VLC Video when you need a multi-item playlist or playlist shuffle. See OBS’s source documentation for supported formats and source properties.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Follow the encoder setup flow to obtain the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s steps are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if it is available, or configure the service using YouTube’s server URL and your stream key. The labels can vary with the OBS version and connection method.
- Keep the stream key private: YouTube describes it as the address and password for the stream. Anyone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS. Manage live stream settings
- Start the source playback and select Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming feed and preview in Live Control Room; select Go live there when you are ready for viewers to see it.
Set output quality and protect stream stability
Choose a resolution and frame rate your computer can encode and your upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends outbound bandwidth with about 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate. Its current encoder guidance recommends RTMP/RTMPS, H.264 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval for the listed workflow. Exact bitrate needs vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance · YouTube streaming tips
| Output example | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
Those figures are YouTube’s recommendations for the stated H.264 output, not a guarantee that a connection or computer will sustain the broadcast. Test with representative playback before going live. Check OBS’s output and audio, the YouTube preview, and Live Control Room’s stream health; monitor them while the show runs. If upload capacity is variable, reduce the output bitrate or resolution rather than operating at the edge of the connection.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Plan for long broadcasts and replays
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one complete, automatically available replay will be created for a continuous 24/7 broadcast. If you need a replay, plan local recording or divide the programming into separate sessions, then check how the resulting replays appear on your channel. YouTube’s encoder stream guidance
Troubleshoot common problems
- The channel cannot go live: Check Live Control Room for verification status, an active restriction, or incomplete first-time activation. Activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The VLC Video source is missing or will not start: Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Reopen the source properties and check the playlist files.
- The playlist stops after one pass: Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. Check that the intended files are actually in the playlist.
- The stream is live but has no sound: Confirm the VLC source is playing, inspect the OBS mixer meters, and check the selected devices under Settings → Audio. Make a short test before relaunching publicly.
- The YouTube preview does not appear: Confirm OBS is sending to the correct server URL and stream key, and that you started streaming in OBS. Wait for the preview before selecting Go live.
- The feed drops or becomes unstable: Check upload bandwidth and leave YouTube’s recommended headroom. Lower bitrate or output resolution if needed; network disruption can break a stream. A wired connection may help diagnose unreliable Wi-Fi, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted service.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: Check the broadcast duration and the resulting channel replay. YouTube’s automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed single archive for a longer continuous stream.
