Open the active stream, go to its settings, choose the edit control, change the title or description, and save. The exact label or placement may change as Studio’s interface evolves. If you are streaming through another platform, use that service’s live dashboard; the YouTube steps are not universal.
Change the metadata on a live YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio. Go to YouTube Help’s live stream settings guide if you need the current instructions for finding the controls.
- Open Go Live / Live Control Room and select the active stream.
- Open the stream settings and choose Edit. Update the title, description, or both, then save the changes. YouTube documents editing metadata from the stream settings page; controls can move or be renamed as the interface changes.
- Verify the result. Check the stream’s details in Studio or its public watch page to confirm the saved metadata is what viewers see.
These instructions apply to an encoder or mobile YouTube livestream. A scheduled stream is not the same as an already-running one: select the active broadcast when making a live change.
Edit the broadcast, not the encoder connection
YouTube separates the viewer-facing broadcast from the incoming encoder feed. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API broadcast documentation describes the broadcast as the video viewers watch and says its title, description, category, privacy status, and other video metadata can be updated. The separate LiveStreams API documentation covers the encoder feed; its title and description are not visible to YouTube users.
So changing a stream key, encoder profile, or connection setting is not how you change the title and description shown on the watch page. Make the edit on the active broadcast in Studio.

If you started the show with StreamYard or another multistream tool
StreamYard’s guides document setting a title and description when creating a live stream, with destination-specific customization when sending to multiple platforms. See How to Create a Live Stream and How to Multi-stream. Those setup instructions do not establish that a change made in StreamYard after a broadcast starts will update every destination.
For a live show, edit through the destination’s own live dashboard if the multistream service does not expose a suitable edit control. Then check each destination’s live page: platforms can handle post-start edits differently. StreamYard also distinguishes scheduling from going live: scheduling can create an audience-facing post, but the host still needs to enter the studio and click Go Live at showtime.

Check before you save
- Title: Make it clear that the program is live and identify the episode or subject without promising content the show does not contain.
- Description: Correct any outdated episode details, links, or timing information. Confirm that the first lines accurately describe the current broadcast.
- Destination: If you are multistreaming, verify the title and description on each platform rather than assuming one edit propagates everywhere.
- Saved state: Reopen the Studio details or refresh the public watch page after saving to confirm the change took effect.
Troubleshooting a title or description that has not changed
The encoder settings have no title field
That is expected: encoder connection settings govern the incoming feed, while viewers see the broadcast’s video metadata. Return to the active broadcast in YouTube Studio and edit its settings.
The stream is not listed as active
Confirm you selected the correct broadcast in Live Control Room. A scheduled event or a different stream is not the running broadcast you intend to edit.

Only one destination shows the new details
Check the other destination’s live dashboard and update its metadata there if necessary. A per-destination setup workflow does not guarantee synchronized post-start edits.
You cannot find the same control label
YouTube may adjust Studio’s layout. Start from the active stream’s settings and consult the current YouTube live stream settings help rather than changing encoder settings.
