A single YouTube stream drop cannot prove that a CGNAT timeout caused it. First record the exact time and YouTube Live Control Room status, then check your encoder, local recording and connection stability. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet and, if possible, another access network. Only after that should you ask your ISP whether your connection is behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) and whether it can check the matching session logs. A public-IP mismatch can indicate upstream NAT; it does not establish that a NAT timer caused your stream to stop.
This guide answers: “How do I check whether a YouTube stream drop is caused by a CGNAT timeout in India?” The steps help narrow down the cause and give your ISP useful evidence, but the timer and connection details needed to confirm a CGNAT timeout may only be available to the provider.
Does a stream dropping after a few minutes prove my ISP’s CGNAT is timing out?
No. A repeatable drop after a particular number of minutes is a pattern worth investigating, not proof of a timeout. Encoder faults, an unstable or overloaded connection, Wi-Fi interference, routing or firewall behavior, and YouTube errors or policy actions can also interrupt a stream.
OBS describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. Those symptoms identify a problem somewhere along the path; they do not identify CGNAT as the cause. YouTube likewise distinguishes encoder or source trouble from an unhealthy outbound connection and recommends checking both.

It helps to separate two questions:
- Is the connection behind CGNAT? A router WAN address that differs from the externally visible public IPv4 address can be a clue to upstream NAT. Your ISP can confirm whether the carrier, rather than just your router, performs NAT.
- Did a CGNAT mapping timeout cause this drop? That requires evidence tying the interruption to a particular flow and mapping event. A public-IP mismatch alone does not provide it.
What to record when the stream drops
Capture the event before changing settings or restarting equipment, if practical. Live Control Room status and error messages can provide time-linked clues, while your encoder logs and local recording help separate source problems from an ingest or network interruption.
- Write down the local date and time, including your time zone, and how long the stream had been running.
- Copy the exact Live Control Room stream-health status or error text. Note whether viewers lost the feed at the same time and whether the stream ended for everyone or only your encoder appeared disconnected.
- Save encoder logs and statistics around the event, including dropped frames, disconnects, and any error messages.
- Check whether the local recording is complete and playable, and note any missing, corrupted, frozen, or silent sections.
- Record the encoder, stream destination and settings you used. If you compare runs, keep these the same wherever practical.
Run the checks in this order
1. Check the encoder and source
Look at encoder logs and dropped-frame statistics around the recorded time. Check CPU load and confirm that the audio and video sources remained available. Review the local archive: if it is damaged or contains the same freeze or interruption as the live feed, investigate the source or encoder before blaming the ISP. YouTube’s livestream troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking encoder health, CPU use and the local archive. OBS notes that excessive dropped frames can lead to a disconnection from the ingest server.
2. Check upload capacity and stream settings
Run a sustained upload test under conditions similar to your broadcast, including any other devices or uploads that normally share the connection. Compare the available upload capacity with the bitrate configured in your encoder. If the connection has little headroom, test again at a more conservative bitrate or other reliable setting. YouTube advises testing the connection and choosing settings it can sustain; consult its current encoder settings guidance for supported protocols and bitrate recommendations rather than assuming a setting that works on one connection will work on another.

Use the same encoder, destination and content in comparison runs as far as possible. If lowering the bitrate changes the result, that points toward a capacity or stability issue; by itself, it does not show whether NAT, congestion or another network factor was involved.
3. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
Run a controlled test over Ethernet if available, with other heavy uploads paused. Compare the stream-health status, encoder statistics and exact time of any failure with a Wi-Fi run. A Cat6 Ethernet cable can be used for this wired comparison, but it is not a CGNAT detector or a guaranteed fix. If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, investigate the local wireless path first; the result does not rule out other problems.
4. Compare a second access network if practical
For a short, controlled test, use a different ISP or a mobile hotspot with the same encoder, settings, content and YouTube destination. Note whether the original connection and the second network fail in the same way. If the second network succeeds, the original access path becomes more suspect, but that still leaves several possibilities—including congestion, routing, local network conditions, firewalling and ISP policy—as well as NAT.

5. Check whether your connection is behind carrier NAT
Compare the router’s WAN IPv4 address with the public IPv4 address visible to an external service. If they differ, or the router shows a private or shared-range address, that can indicate another NAT layer upstream. It is a clue, not a standalone diagnosis: the mismatch does not tell you which party performs the upstream NAT, what its mapping timer is, or whether a mapping expired during your stream.
Ask your ISP directly whether your account is behind CGNAT. If it is, ask whether a public IPv4 option is available and whether support can inspect the NAT or session records for the exact time you recorded. The IETF’s RFC 6888 describes requirements for carrier-grade NAT, but it does not identify the configuration of an individual Indian provider or connection.
6. Test the timeout theory without assuming the transport
Record whether the failure happens at a repeatable elapsed time and whether it occurs while the stream is continuously active or only after a period of inactivity. An idle-only failure may make an idle mapping timeout more plausible than a failure during continuous traffic, but it is still not confirmation. Share the timestamps and pattern with your ISP and ask it to correlate the relevant session or NAT logs. Avoid assuming which transport or flow YouTube ingest used based on the fact that the stream dropped; check the encoder and YouTube settings relevant to your setup.

RFC 4787, an IETF Best Current Practice published in January 2007, says UDP mapping timeout implementations vary, including in timer value and how the timer is refreshed. Its REQ-5 says a UDP mapping timer must not expire in less than two minutes except for a specified well-known-port exception, and it recommends a default of five minutes or more. These are standards provisions and guidance—not measurements of an Indian ISP’s settings, nor evidence that your stream used an affected UDP flow.
7. Check YouTube status and policy notices
Review the Live Control Room error text and your YouTube Studio dashboard before attributing a stop to the network. YouTube documents platform errors and copyright or policy actions that can interrupt or terminate a live stream. If the encoder appears healthy but only YouTube ingest fails, check the status message, ingest endpoint selection, encoder configuration and any relevant platform notice.

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a CGNAT diagnostic tool. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo runs the playback in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera. Moving playback to a cloud service changes the streaming path, so it cannot by itself prove that your home ISP’s CGNAT caused an earlier drop.

How to interpret the results
| What you observe | What it points toward | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| The local archive is corrupt, encoder errors appear, or CPU load is excessive. | Prioritize source, encoder or computer troubleshooting. | It does not establish a CGNAT problem. |
| The encoder looks healthy, but OBS reports dropped frames or a disconnection. | Investigate route stability, upload headroom and the ISP path. | It does not distinguish CGNAT from congestion, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, firewalling or routing. |
| Several services fail at the same time. | An access-path problem becomes more plausible. | It does not isolate a NAT timeout. |
| Only YouTube ingest fails. | Check YouTube’s status and error messages, ingest selection, encoder configuration and platform notices. | It does not by itself establish that the ISP is responsible. |
| The router WAN IPv4 differs from the externally visible IPv4, and the ISP confirms carrier NAT. | This supports the conclusion that your connection is behind CGNAT. | It does not establish the timer value or explain a particular interruption. |
| A failure repeats at about the same elapsed time. | There is a repeatable pattern to share with your ISP. | It does not prove a mapping expired; the flow details and provider logs still matter. |
What to ask your ISP
Give support a concise, time-bounded report rather than only saying that YouTube drops. Include your local time and time zone, stream duration, exact YouTube status or error, encoder log details, whether the local recording continued, and the result of any wired or second-network comparison. Then ask:
- Is this connection behind CGNAT, and can you confirm whether the NAT is on the carrier side?
- Can you check NAT or session records for the time window I supplied?
- Can you identify the relevant protocol or flow and whether a mapping or session expired?
- Is a public IPv4 option available for this account?
A provider’s confirmation of CGNAT establishes the network arrangement, not that it caused a specific YouTube drop. A timer explanation needs evidence that matches the relevant connection and event time. RFC 4787’s general UDP guidance should not be presented as a measurement of your ISP.
Common symptoms and next steps
- There is no useful Live Control Room error saved: on the next run, record the health status and exact local time as soon as a problem appears, before restarting the stream.
- Dropped frames rise before disconnection: compare a sustained upload test with your configured bitrate, then test a more conservative setting and a wired connection.
- The local file also has the interruption: review the source, encoder, CPU load and storage path before focusing on the ISP.
- The problem appears only on Wi-Fi: investigate the local wireless connection using a controlled Ethernet comparison.
- The issue occurs only on the original ISP: share the controlled comparison and timestamps with the ISP, but keep congestion, routing, policy and NAT among the possibilities.
- The issue recurs at the same elapsed time: provide several exact timestamps and whether traffic was continuous or idle; ask the provider to correlate them with session records rather than inferring a timer from timing alone.
- YouTube reports a copyright, policy or other platform error: follow the notice and review Studio dashboard details before treating the event as a connection failure.
What is known about CGNAT in India?
There is no authoritative India-wide figure established here for how many consumer ISP connections use CGNAT, and no provider-specific YouTube stream timeout figure. A Government of India TEC study paper concerns the tests in its own context; it should not be generalized to a particular provider, plan or household. Your ISP’s confirmation and time-matched connection evidence are more relevant to your case than a nationwide assumption.
