To keep a recorded church service playing on YouTube Live, add it to an OBS scene as a looping Media Source, or use a looping VLC Video playlist for several recordings. Connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with its stream URL and key, then test the preview and monitor stream health. The computer running OBS must stay on and connected for the stream to continue.
Choose the OBS playback method

Set up a continuous stream step by step
- Prepare the recordings. Put the service files in a stable folder on the computer that will run OBS. Open each file and check that its audio and video play correctly. Decide whether you want one service to repeat or a playlist to cycle through. Install VLC first if you plan to use a VLC Video source.
- Create an OBS scene. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source for one recording. Create a new source, select the file, and enable Loop. For multiple recordings, add a VLC Video source, add files in the playback order you want, and enable Loop Playlist. Keep the source visible in the active scene; hiding a VLC source can affect its playback.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide to create or schedule the stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key as appropriate for the connection method. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your channel. Do not share it publicly. YouTube’s stream settings guide explains stream keys and settings.
- Configure video and audio output. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. Its encoder guidance specifies H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. Pick the output resolution and bitrate to suit the available upload bandwidth, leaving headroom for other network use rather than treating one bitrate as right for every connection. Consult the YouTube encoder settings and streaming tips when setting OBS output.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming in OBS and wait for the feed to appear in YouTube Live Control Room. Check framing, playback, and audio in the preview before making the stream public or going live. Test with representative content and confirm the event is accessible from the channel and watch page. YouTube recommends starting the encoder ahead of an event, previewing, and monitoring stream health; see its live streaming tips.
- Keep the local setup running. OBS is sending the scene from the computer, so the computer and its network connection need to remain on for the stream to continue. Avoid sleep, shutdown, or interruptions to the connection during the broadcast.
Plan for replays and long-running streams
Do not rely on YouTube to preserve an exceptionally long broadcast as a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a replay matters, end and restart the broadcast before that threshold and make a local recording as a backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance for the current qualification.
Clear rights for every part of the service
A recording may contain third-party music, readings, slides, or other material, and rebroadcasting it does not remove the need to secure the necessary rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may interrupt or terminate a stream if matched content remains. A license alone may not prevent a Content ID interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel. Confirm that the church has the necessary permissions, including music rights, before streaming. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance and its livestream terms.

Troubleshoot common OBS-to-YouTube problems
- The video does not appear in the scene: Confirm the source is enabled and visible, the correct file or playlist is selected, and the file plays locally. For VLC Video, confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- The video stops at the end: For one file, open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For several files, enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source.
- YouTube does not receive a feed: Check that the stream URL and key in OBS match the encoder stream in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- The preview is unstable or stream health is poor: Check the internet connection and reduce output resolution or bitrate if the available upload bandwidth cannot sustain the current settings. Use CBR and the recommended 2-second keyframe interval, and review YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- The live stream is interrupted despite working playback: Check YouTube’s stream health and copyright notifications. Third-party content can trigger live matching; confirm rights and any required channel allowlisting with the rights owner.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all. For future broadcasts, restart before that duration and keep a local recording if the replay is important.
