Google Drive stores your gaming VOD; it does not send that video to YouTube Live by itself. To broadcast it, make the file accessible to a computer, play it through an encoder such as OBS, and connect the encoder to your YouTube live event using its server URL and stream key. Test the video and audio in YouTube Studio before starting the event, and stream only content you have the rights to use.
What you need
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance covers copyright; eligibility and activation guidance is in its encoder setup instructions.
- Access to the VOD as a playable file, either downloaded locally or available through Drive for desktop.
- An encoder, such as OBS, to play the video and send a live feed to YouTube.
- Your event’s server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, plus enough continuous upload bandwidth for the stream.
Make the VOD available to the encoder
Option 1: Download it from Google Drive
- Open the video in Google Drive and choose Download. Save it somewhere you can locate from the encoder.
- Play the downloaded file before the event and confirm that both picture and audio work.
The owner can disable downloading, copying, or printing for viewers and commenters. If Download is unavailable, ask the owner for a permitted copy or appropriate access; do not attempt to bypass the restriction. See Google Drive’s download instructions.
Option 2: Use Drive for desktop
Drive for desktop can stream files that are primarily stored in the cloud, or mirror them so they are stored locally and available offline. For a long broadcast, make sure the video is available and plays reliably before going live; streamed playback depends on Drive connectivity, while mirroring uses local storage. Connect the encoder to your YouTube event
- Create or select the live event: In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup and create or select the event you intend to broadcast.
- Get the destination details: Copy the event’s server URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup. The server URL is the destination; the key identifies the stream for your event. Treat the key like a password and do not share it publicly.
- Configure the encoder: In OBS or another encoder, set the YouTube destination using the server URL and stream key. YouTube describes the encoder workflow and lists OBS as an open-source software option at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Add the VOD as playback: Add the accessible video file as a media or playback source in the encoder, then place and size it in the scene as needed. Exact menu names and playback controls vary by encoder version and operating system; YouTube’s setup instructions cover the destination connection, not a universal procedure for adding a file source.
Check the stream before starting
- Start the encoder output and watch the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Confirm the video is moving and correctly framed, and listen for clear audio at a suitable level.
- Check that YouTube reports the incoming stream as healthy before starting the public event. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring the stream; see YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Keep monitoring picture and sound during the broadcast so you can catch playback stalls or audio problems.
- When finished, end the event in YouTube. Stop the encoder after YouTube indicates that the event has stopped.
Bandwidth, rights, and common problems
Allow upload headroom
The encoder must upload continuously. YouTube recommends testing upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. That recommendation is a margin, not a guarantee of a stable connection; test from the network and location you will use for the event. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Clear the rights to every part of the VOD
Having a video in Drive does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop the content, and continued playback can interrupt or terminate the stream. For licensed third-party material, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and obtain the necessary rights before broadcasting.
If the video will not play
- Download is missing or unavailable: The owner may have disabled downloading for your permission level. Ask for an authorized copy or access.
- Drive playback stutters or stops: Confirm the file is available offline or locally, test the full playback path, and prefer a downloaded or mirrored copy if relying on an internet connection to fetch the file is unreliable.
- YouTube shows no incoming video: Check that the encoder is sending to the correct event with that event’s server URL and stream key, then inspect the encoder output and YouTube preview.
- Picture arrives but audio does not: Check the source’s audio in the encoder and listen to the YouTube preview before the event begins.
- The stream is unstable: Test upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above total stream bitrate; also check whether the source itself is stalling.
- YouTube interrupts the broadcast: Check for third-party material and rights or Content ID issues. Do not resume disputed content unless you have permission and have addressed the relevant rights issue.
When to use software or hardware encoding
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming and names OBS as an open-source software option. Its guidance does not require paid software or dedicated hardware for this VOD workflow. A software encoder is a reasonable starting point; consider hardware only if your production needs justify it. In either case, the VOD still needs to be accessible to the encoder, and the encoder must send the event’s feed to YouTube.
