How to Restart a Church’s YouTube Sermon Stream Automatically After an FFmpeg Error

A systemd restart policy can relaunch FFmpeg after a process failure, but output recovery and YouTube broadcast status need separate checks.

Run FFmpeg as the foreground process of a systemd service and set Restart=on-failure with a deliberate RestartSec= delay. That can relaunch FFmpeg after qualifying process failures. It does not fix every broken stream: if FFmpeg stays alive while its output fails, investigate FFmpeg’s applicable protocol or FIFO recovery options, then verify the broadcast separately in YouTube Live Control Room.

What automatic restart can—and cannot—recover

There are three different states to distinguish: FFmpeg exits, FFmpeg remains alive but a connection or output fails, and YouTube’s broadcast is not reaching viewers. A systemd restart policy addresses the first state. FFmpeg’s protocol reconnect options and FIFO muxer address some cases in the second. YouTube’s Live Control Room and viewer-side playback help establish the third.

What you observe Recovery layer to investigate What it does not establish
FFmpeg exits with an error or is terminated abnormally systemd Restart=on-failure and a deliberate delay That YouTube accepted the ingest or that viewers can see the event
FFmpeg stays active but an input connection drops The reconnect options documented for that specific FFmpeg input protocol That the same options recover a YouTube publishing output
FFmpeg stays active but output encounters a recoverable error FFmpeg FIFO muxer recovery options, where appropriate Recovery from permanent errors, invalid credentials, or every network fault
FFmpeg restarts but viewers still cannot see the sermon YouTube Live Control Room and viewer-side verification That the underlying source, key, encoder, or network fault has been repaired

systemd documents Restart=on-failure as the recommended choice for long-running services. It can restart after non-zero exits, qualifying signals, timeouts, and watchdog failures, subject to service rate limits. A deliberate systemctl stop is not undone by this policy. See the systemd service manual.

Configure systemd to relaunch FFmpeg

Run FFmpeg as the service’s main, foreground process. Avoid a shell wrapper that exits while leaving an unmanaged FFmpeg child behind. The following is an illustrative unit shape, not a tested command for every host:

  1. Check the local setup: confirm the FFmpeg binary path, installed systemd version, input, codecs, output protocol, service account permissions, and the actual YouTube ingest details. Replace the bracketed placeholders with the church’s real command arguments.
  2. Save the unit and load it: use the host’s normal systemd workflow to reload unit files after creating or editing the service, then enable or start it as appropriate for the church’s operations.
  3. Inspect service state and logs: use systemctl status for the service and journalctl -u <service> -f to follow its journal. Look for the first FFmpeg error, not only the messages produced by later retries.
  4. Test recovery deliberately: confirm that a qualifying FFmpeg process failure causes a new process to start, then verify its output in YouTube. Do not treat a running service alone as proof of a live broadcast.

RestartSec= sets the delay before a restart; the systemd manual lists a default of 100 milliseconds. Choose an intentional delay for the service and failure mode rather than allowing rapid crash-and-restart cycles. The example’s 5s is a starting value, not a universal recommendation. See the systemd service manual for directive behavior and version details.

Treat the YouTube stream key as a credential. Do not post it in public support threads or expose it in broadly accessible unit files or logs. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance requires the Live server URL and stream key.

If FFmpeg stays alive, diagnose the failing layer

For a dropped input connection

FFmpeg documents protocol-specific reconnect options, including reconnect-before-EOF, EOF-triggered reconnection for live or endless inputs, network-error reconnect, and retry limits. These only apply when they match the protocol and connection direction in use. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the input protocol and options in your command; input reconnect behavior should not be assumed to repair the YouTube publishing output.

For a recoverable output error

The FFmpeg FIFO muxer provides configurable recovery behavior for some output errors while FFmpeg continues processing. It is separate from systemd supervision: systemd reacts to process termination, while FIFO recovery can address certain output failures inside a still-running process. Neither mechanism guarantees recovery from permanent errors, a rejected ingest, invalid credentials, or every network condition.

Verify the YouTube broadcast after a restart

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the encoder preview returns after FFmpeg reconnects or restarts.
  2. For a scheduled stream, use the event’s Go Live control when the workflow requires it; an encoder restart does not by itself prove that the scheduled broadcast is live.
  3. Check the actual viewer endpoint or public playback as well as the encoder preview. These are separate checks of the intended broadcast and what viewers can access.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS. Its published resolution and frame-rate guidance covers codec, keyframe, audio, and bitrate settings. The page currently recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; check its current settings and match them to the actual FFmpeg command. These are ingest recommendations, not restart fixes. See YouTube’s live encoder settings; the page does not display a publication date.

Troubleshoot in this order

  1. Find the first error. Read the earliest relevant FFmpeg message in the service journal; repeated retry output can obscure the original failure.
  2. Determine whether FFmpeg exited. If it did, inspect the systemd unit, restart policy, delay, rate limits, and journal. Restart=on-failure does not reverse an intentional service stop.
  3. If FFmpeg is still active, identify the failed connection. Establish whether it is an input or output, then check whether the protocol’s documented reconnect options or FIFO output recovery apply.
  4. Check the persistent causes. Validate the input source, current YouTube server URL and key, encoder settings, and network path. Repeatedly restarting an unchanged command will not fix an invalid key, unavailable source, incompatible settings, rejected ingest, or continuing network fault.
  5. Verify service and audience separately. Check the service state and logs, then the Live Control Room preview and viewer playback. If YouTube reports an ingest or platform problem, use that status to guide the next step rather than assuming another restart will help.
