If your YouTube 24/7 stream stops when you close SSH, first check whether the VPS itself is still running. If only the SSH session ended, run the encoder inside a remote tmux session and detach. If the encoder crashes or must recover after a reboot, supervise it with systemd. If the provider stopped or suspended the VM, neither tool can keep it online: check the provider’s notice and terms, then use a host that permits continuous encoding.
“Idle session suspension” can mean several different things. A dropped SSH connection, an encoder process exiting, a reboot, a network or YouTube ingest problem, and a provider stopping the VM need different fixes. The VPS provider and exact suspension message are not specified here, so there is no provider-specific setting that can safely be recommended.
Diagnose what actually went offline
- Note the time. In YouTube Studio, open the matching stream’s Live Control Room and check its health status and any error messages. YouTube’s live streaming error guidance can help identify format or ingest problems.
- Check the VPS. Use the provider console or status page to see whether the VM is still running. If it is available, check whether the encoder process still exists. If the VM is unavailable, look for a suspension notice or event in the provider’s console.
- If the VM is up but SSH disconnected, check for a surviving tmux session with
tmux ls. If you see the named session, reconnect usingtmux attach -t youtube. - If the encoder process is gone, inspect its output or logs and resource use. A terminal session alone does not supervise a process that exits; use a service manager if you need unattended restart or recovery after reboot.
- If the process is still running but YouTube shows an unhealthy or offline stream, inspect encoder errors and outbound connectivity. YouTube recommends checking encoder health and CPU load, confirming the stream’s picture and sound, testing the outbound connection, and contacting the internet provider if connectivity is problematic. - If the provider stopped the VM, ask why and review the plan’s resource, idle-use, and acceptable-use terms. A keepalive, tmux, or restart rule cannot reverse a provider action.
The distinction matters: tmux preserves a terminal session after SSH disconnects, while systemd supervises a service process. Neither can revive a VM that the provider has stopped.
Keep the encoder running after SSH disconnects with tmux
Use tmux on the remote VPS, not just on your own computer. The tmux(1) manual says a session survives accidental disconnection, such as an SSH timeout, and can be reattached later.

- Connect to the VPS and start a named session:
tmux new -s youtube. - Start your existing encoder command inside that session. Confirm it is running before detaching.
- Detach by pressing Ctrl-b, then d. You can then close SSH; the session remains on the VPS while tmux and the VM remain alive.
- Reconnect later and run
tmux attach -t youtubeto return to the session. Usetmux lsto check whether it still exists.
If tmux reports no session, or you find that the encoder exited, tmux has not restarted it. Check the encoder’s exit output and use a service manager for process supervision.
Use systemd for encoder crashes and reboot recovery
For an unattended encoder, a system service is a better process owner than an interactive shell. Configure it with the correct absolute executable path, working directory, permissions, logs, and protected stream-key handling. The exact unit depends on your encoder command and VPS setup, which are not specified here.

- Choose a restart policy appropriate to the process.
Restart=on-failurecan restart after qualifying failures, including configured non-zero exits, signals, and timeouts; it does not undo an administrative stop or a provider suspension. See the systemd.service(5) manual. - Enable the service at boot if it must start after the VM reboots, and test the restart behavior deliberately before relying on it.
- Keep the YouTube stream key out of public scripts and repositories. Treat it as a credential; if it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio.
Check the manual for the systemd version installed on your VPS, because service capabilities and configuration details can vary by version. A restart policy handles qualifying service failures; it cannot make a suspended VM run.
Check YouTube ingest and encoder settings before changing them
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. After the encoder starts, verify the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room; a running process on the VPS does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the URL-and-key workflow.

If YouTube reports an ingest or format error, use the specific message to guide changes rather than altering settings at random. YouTube’s error guidance covers H.264 video, AAC audio, bitrate, audio/video stream count, and keyframe frequency. If the health error points instead to connectivity, investigate the VPS’s outbound network, provider bandwidth or connection limits, and any interruption between the VPS and YouTube.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; the page does not establish that an uninterrupted stream longer than that will be archived. If you need a replay, keep a separate recording or schedule shorter streams if that fits your channel’s workflow.

When the VPS provider suspends or stops the VM
First obtain the provider’s event notice and determine whether the action was triggered by an idle-use rule, resource limit, acceptable-use policy, billing issue, or another reason. The provider and plan are unspecified, so continuous-streaming permission cannot be inferred. Ask support whether persistent outbound encoding to YouTube is allowed and what limits apply.
If continuous encoding is disallowed, or the provider continues to stop the instance, move the workload to a host whose current terms permit it. Compare permission for continuous workloads, outbound transfer and bandwidth limits, monitoring and logs, relevant server location, and total cost. Do not assume that tmux, SSH keepalives, or systemd restart settings can override provider policy.
