If your YouTube stream drops frames after OBS warns “Encoding overloaded,” first check which OBS counter is rising. Encoding lag, rendering lag, and network dropped frames have different causes—and the overload warning alone does not prove that your internet connection is at fault. Use OBS Stats and the log to identify the symptom, then change the matching setting.
Identify which frames OBS is losing
Open OBS’s Stats or stream summary and check the performance categories; inspect the log for more detail. OBS distinguishes rendering and encoding performance problems from connection-related dropped frames. More than one problem can occur at once, so do not assume the warning explains every counter. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide and its encoding performance guide describe these as separate issues.
| What you see | What it indicates | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding lag or skipped frames | OBS cannot encode the configured workload quickly enough. | Reduce the encoding workload, starting with output resolution or frame rate if simpler changes do not help. |
| Rendering lag or stalls | OBS is not compositing and rendering frames on time; the GPU may be busy with the game or other work. | Cap the game’s frame rate or reduce its graphics workload to free GPU capacity. |
| Network dropped frames or connection stalls | The connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Check stable upload capacity and the network path; lower bitrate if necessary. |
The exact cause on your PC cannot be determined without its OBS counters, log, operating system, encoder, hardware, and settings. Treat the counters and log as the diagnosis, not the warning by itself.
Fix rendering or encoding overload first
If rendering lag or encoding lag is rising, work through these changes one at a time and recheck the counters after each test. The goal is to free capacity without lowering quality more than necessary. OBS’s performance guide recommends the following approaches.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Free up GPU capacity
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS says this can allow Windows to reserve some GPU capacity for OBS.
- Close other GPU-heavy applications that you recognize and do not need during the stream.
- If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync so the GPU has capacity left to render OBS scenes. Lower the game’s graphics settings if that is not enough.
Reduce the OBS workload
- If counters still show a performance problem, reduce OBS output resolution or frame rate. OBS notes that frame rate affects both rendering and encoding; try 30 fps if 60 fps is not keeping up.
- Simplify scenes to test for expensive sources and filters. Temporarily disable filters, reduce browser-source dimensions, and use static image or media sources where they meet your needs.
- If your scene collection is very large, split it into smaller collections if practical.
- Lowering the base canvas resolution is more disruptive because sources may need resizing and repositioning. Reserve it for more severe resource constraints.
Check Windows-specific factors where relevant
OBS’s guide also calls out Game Capture multi-adapter compatibility and Game DVR or Game Mode behavior. These checks are Windows-specific, and the relevant settings can vary by Windows version; verify your OS and current configuration before changing them.
Fix network dropped frames separately
If the network dropped-frame counter rises, OBS identifies an unstable connection to the ingest server or insufficient bandwidth for the configured bitrate as likely causes. That signal does not mean the encoder overload caused the network problem. Use the OBS connection troubleshooting guide to check the route and settings.

Match bitrate to stable upload capacity
- Run an upload speed test and use a quality and bitrate your connection can sustain reliably, not just at its best moment.
- OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic. It is not a guaranteed safe bitrate: account for fluctuations and other network use, and stay within YouTube’s recommendations for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- If network drops continue, reduce video bitrate and test again. This can improve continuity but reduces image quality.
- If your setup offers another ingest server, test it. Trying another streaming service can help distinguish a service-specific issue, but does not by itself identify which part of your usual route is failing.
Check the network path
- Use wired Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi when possible; wireless instability can interrupt a stream.
- Check whether a VPN, security software, or network-priority utility is interfering. OBS names Lenovo Vantage and Killer NIC as examples of software that may deprioritize OBS.
- Update network drivers where appropriate. On Windows, OBS lists network optimizations, TCP pacing, and dynamic bitrate as conditional troubleshooting options. Dynamic bitrate may lower quality; it does not repair an unstable connection.
- A fault can be anywhere along the path, including the modem, router, cables, network card, switch, or extender. If you suspect faulty hardware but are unsure, OBS advises contacting your ISP before replacing equipment.
A wired Ethernet cable is worth considering only if Wi-Fi instability is part of the network diagnosis. It will not fix encoding overload or GPU rendering lag.
Use YouTube-compatible settings and test before going live
Meeting YouTube’s encoder recommendations makes the stream compatible with its platform; it does not prove that your computer can render and encode those settings or that your upload can sustain them. YouTube recommends selecting a quality your connection can reliably support, testing upload speed, and running a representative test with the audio and movement you expect during the live stream. Monitor stream health and messages during the event.

YouTube’s encoder guidance, reviewed 2026-10-03, specifies RTMP or RTMPS, CBR, H.264, H.265, or AV1, and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the full recommendations and minimum rates for your selected combination; these settings can change.
| YouTube-published combination | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, reviewed 2026-10-03—not measurements of your connection or a guarantee that your upload can sustain the rate. Choose from the current table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then keep the bitrate within your stable upload capacity. Test with representative gameplay and audio before the event and watch stream health while live.
