A useful place to start is by genre and play style: try Dragon Quest VIII for a long-form role-playing adventure, Gran Turismo 4 for simulation-focused racing, OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast for arcade racing, or SOCOM 2: U.S. Navy SEALs for tactical shooting. These are editorial starting points, not an objective ranking; whether you can play a particular game today depends on its edition, region, and available format.
Why the PS2 library is so broad
Sony released the PlayStation 2 in Japan in March 2000. Its DVD playback, network play for select titles through the Network Adapter, and range of software helped make it more than a single-purpose game machine. Sony’s company history also highlights the system’s Emotion Engine and iconic game library. Sony’s company history gives the platform’s milestones.
In a February 14, 2011 announcement, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. reported more than 10,828 PS2 software titles, describing a library spanning genres and appealing to the whole family. That is Sony’s count at that time, not a current catalog total. Sony’s same announcement said the system had reached 150 million units sold worldwide as of January 31, 2011, a cumulative sell-in figure. Sony’s 2011 announcement also notes that EyeToy let players use their images and body movements in games, broadening the system’s appeal.
The platform’s reach is also reflected in its software sales. Sony reported more than 1.52 billion software units sold worldwide through the end of December 2011. Separately, Sony’s business-data page lists cumulative worldwide PS2 software sales of more than 1,537.0 million as of March 31, 2012. These are two dated reports, not a new combined estimate. Sony’s business data provides the later figure.

Where to start: four games across different genres
The picks below represent different ways to enjoy the system. The selection favors recognizable genre examples and a mix of focused and expansive play; it is not a claim that these titles are universally the best or easiest to find today. GamesRadar+ includes these games in its subjective editorial list of PS2 recommendations.
| Game | Genre and appeal | Best starting point for | Present-day access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King | Role-playing game; a representative choice for players looking for a substantial fantasy adventure. | Players who want a story-led, single-player experience and are comfortable settling into a long RPG. | Check the exact edition and region, and verify any modern release or storefront listing before buying. The cited ranking does not establish current availability. |
| Gran Turismo 4 | Simulation-oriented racing; a fit for players who want a more deliberate driving experience. | Racing fans drawn to vehicle-focused, methodical play rather than quick arcade races. | Confirm that a listing is the PS2 edition or a specifically verified later release. Current availability is not established by the cited ranking. |
| OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast | Arcade racing; a contrasting option for a more immediate racing style. | Players who prefer shorter, more accessible racing sessions. | GamesRadar+ mentions second-hand copies for some recommendations, but that does not establish current stock or condition for this title. Verify the format and seller listing. |
| SOCOM 2: U.S. Navy SEALs | Tactical shooter; a genre example that emphasizes deliberate combat rather than arcade-style action. | Players interested in a tactical-shooter perspective on the PS2 library. | Availability, including any multiplayer functionality, depends on the specific edition and current setup. The cited sources do not verify present-day access. |
More franchises that show the system’s range
Sony’s own announcements help explain why the PS2 library is associated with so many different kinds of play. Its 2011 release names Gran Turismo, God of War, SingStar, and Ratchet & Clank among franchises from its first-party studios. A 2009 Sony announcement cites Guitar Hero, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, and Gran Turismo as franchises whose popularity the platform helped establish. The examples span racing, action, music, role-playing, and open-world games rather than pointing to a single style of “PS2 game.”

Availability is title-specific, so begin with the game rather than assuming the whole library works on a particular modern device. Some recommendations may be found as used PS2 discs; selected games also have later-platform availability, but that does not mean every PS2 title has a current digital version. Check the region and edition before treating a listing or storefront page as a match.
