The steps below use Liquidsoap as a reference implementation; adapt the command, paths, account, and dependencies to your actual streaming software. Automatic process restart does not by itself confirm that audio is reaching listeners.
What the two automatic-start settings do
Boot activation and crash recovery are separate controls. systemctl enable connects a unit to its configured boot target so systemd starts it during startup. The service’s Restart= setting controls what systemd does when its main process exits or times out. For long-running services, systemd documents on-failure as the recommended policy; Liquidsoap’s production example uses always, which also restarts after a clean exit. Intentional stop operations requested through systemd are not automatically undone. Frequent failures can also encounter systemd start-rate limits. See systemd.service(5) and Liquidsoap’s production guide.
Create a systemd service for the stream
Liquidsoap recommends running in the foreground under a service manager. Its production guide gives a systemd example with a Liquidsoap command; the unit below adapts that pattern for a Gurbani stream. Change the script path and service account to match your host.

Use the actual Liquidsoap executable and script locations on your server. Liquidsoap’s production documentation says its Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Alpine packages create a liquidsoap system user and group; verify that your installed package did so. That account must be able to read the script, configuration, and audio files it needs.

Choose a restart policy deliberately
Restart=on-failure restarts after an unsuccessful exit or timeout, while leaving a clean exit stopped. Choose Restart=always if any process exit should cause a restart, including a clean exit. Liquidsoap’s example uses always; systemd recommends on-failure for long-running services. Do not use Type=forking for a process that can remain in the foreground: systemd needs to supervise the process it starts.
Understand the network ordering
Wants=network-online.target and After=network-online.target request and order startup relative to that target. They do not prove that a remote streaming endpoint is reachable. Whether the target accurately represents network readiness depends on the host’s network manager and configuration.
Validate, enable, and start the service

liquidsoap --check /etc/liquidsoap/gurbani.liqLiquidsoap recommends this check after script modifications.

Save the unit file, then reload systemd’s unit definitions and enable the service for boot while starting it now:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl enable --now gurbani-radio.service -
Confirm enablement and inspect the service state and current-boot logs:

systemctl is-enabled gurbani-radio.service systemctl status gurbani-radio.service journalctl -u gurbani-radio.service -bDebian’s systemd services guide documents reloading unit files, enabling services, and checking status. Liquidsoap’s production guide also demonstrates enabling and starting a unit together.
Test recovery after a reboot

Schedule a maintenance window if the stream is serving listeners, then reboot the server using your normal operating procedure.

Test the public stream URL or listen from an independent client. A running service only establishes that systemd considers its managed process active; it does not establish that the expected Gurbani audio is being served.
Liquidsoap describes the audio generator, streaming server, and player as distinct parts of the stream path. If the generator outputs to Icecast, configure and verify Icecast separately. Liquidsoap’s Quickstart covers output.icecast and advises changing source and admin passwords when Icecast is publicly exposed.
Troubleshoot a service that does not return

The unit is disabled. Run

The command works in a shell but fails as a service. Check the
ExecStartexecutable path, script path, and whether the configured service account can access the script, configuration, and audio files. Usejournalctl -u gurbani-radio.service -bto find the current-boot error. -
The service starts before the network is usable. Check how your distribution implements
network-online.targetand whether its network manager waits for a usable connection. The unit’s ordering expresses a dependency; it cannot guarantee a remote endpoint is available. -
The process repeatedly crashes. Read the journal for script errors, missing dependencies, permissions, or invalid credentials. Restart settings cannot fix the underlying failure, and repeated attempts may encounter start-rate limiting.

The service is active, but listeners hear silence or the wrong audio. Check the Liquidsoap source and output, the streaming server mount or endpoint, and the listener URL as separate links in the chain.
