When YouTube provides chat replay for an archived live stream, it shows messages alongside the video at the points they appeared during the broadcast. But a 24/7 stream is not guaranteed to become one complete archive: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind while a stream is live may also be limited or unavailable. Check the specific video rather than assuming its archive or chat is complete.
What chat replay looks like
On an eligible archived stream, chat replay appears alongside the video and follows the timing of the original live messages. YouTube Help says replay is on by default for live streams, but a channel owner can turn it off for an archive. Whether it appears on a particular video depends on that video’s availability and settings.
Chat replay is not the same as comments. Replay shows the live chat that accompanied the broadcast; comments appear below the video after the stream ends.
Why a 24/7 stream may have no complete archive
YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is a platform caveat, not a prediction that every long stream will fail or succeed. For a continuous 24/7 gaming broadcast, viewers should not assume there will be a complete day-long VOD with chat. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup.

Live DVR and archive playback are different
DVR is the live-stream feature that lets viewers pause or rewind while the broadcast is still in progress. YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. That limitation concerns rewinding the live broadcast; it is separate from whether a completed archive exists or can be played afterward.
Why chat replay might be missing
If an archive exists but has no replay, several video-specific settings or circumstances may explain it. YouTube Help identifies these possibilities:

- The creator turned chat replay off in the archive’s customization settings.
- The stream was edited in YouTube’s video editor; edited streams do not have chat replay.
- The video’s audience is set as Made for Kids. Live chat and chat replay are disabled for that setting.
- The long broadcast was not captured as an archive. YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Because YouTube’s documentation describes platform-wide behavior rather than the settings of a particular gaming channel, the specific video is the best place to check which explanation applies.
Why chat can look different from one view to another
Top chat versus Live chat
Top chat filters messages based on signals; Live chat is unfiltered. The two modes can therefore show different messages, even for the same broadcast. If a message seems to be missing, check which mode is selected.

YouTube watch page versus embedded player
YouTube says Live chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. If you are watching an embedded video, you may not see the chat surface described in YouTube’s help documentation.
How to check a particular gaming stream
- Open the video’s YouTube watch page. An embedded player may not show Live chat.
- Determine whether you are watching live or an archive. DVR rewind applies while the stream is live; chat replay accompanies an eligible archived stream.
- If chat is available, check its display mode. Top chat filters messages; Live chat does not.
- If an archive has no replay, consider the video’s context. It may have been edited, set as Made for Kids, or had replay disabled by the creator.
- Account for the broadcast length. For a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube says an archive may not be captured, and live DVR may be limited or unavailable.
What this means for viewers of 24/7 gaming VOD channels
A continuous stream can be useful to watch live, but its length makes archive and rewind behavior less predictable than viewers may expect from a shorter broadcast. A missing replay does not by itself establish that chat was absent during the stream; it may reflect archive availability, video settings, editing, or the viewing surface. Likewise, being unable to rewind a live stream is not the same as a completed archive lacking chat.

The cited YouTube Help pages describe general platform behavior, not the configuration or outcome of any specific gaming channel.
