After a Windows update restarts your PC, reopen OBS, verify its YouTube stream key and gaming scene, then start the encoder feed and check the event preview in YouTube Studio. A network reconnect setting can help if OBS stayed open, but it does not by itself reopen OBS after a full reboot. Check whether YouTube still considers the event live before deciding whether to continue it or create another one; neither a seamless event restart nor a single VOD combining both sessions is guaranteed.
Restart the stream after Windows finishes updating
- Let the update finish. Windows may need a restart to complete installation. Avoid opening the stream until Windows has finished restarting and your desktop is ready. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains restart scheduling and active hours.
- Open OBS and check the broadcast setup. Confirm the intended profile and scene collection are loaded. Check that the game capture, microphone, desktop or game audio, and overlays are present. Watch the audio meters while testing sound. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking sources and audio and testing settings before streaming.
- Verify the YouTube destination and stream key. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and check the event’s stream settings. The stream URL tells the encoder where to send video; the stream key authorizes the connection. Treat the key like a password. If it is wrong or outdated, copy the current key from Studio into OBS rather than sharing it or resetting it unnecessarily. YouTube’s live stream settings guide describes stream keys and URLs.
- Check the event before starting OBS’s feed. Look at the Live Control Room preview and event status. For a scheduled encoder stream that requires manual start, wait for the preview and select Go live when appropriate. YouTube documents this scheduled-event flow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Start streaming in OBS. Select Start Streaming and watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Verify that the game image and audio are reaching YouTube, not merely that OBS says it is connected. - Confirm the recording afterward. Once the feed is stable, check YouTube Studio’s Live content and your channel archive. Keep any local recording. Do not assume the pre-update and post-update sessions were combined into one VOD.
First determine what stopped: connection or computer

OBS lists Configure Automatic Reconnect among its Advanced settings. That setting addresses an interrupted connection; it does not establish that OBS will launch after Windows reboots. YouTube also offers auto-start and auto-stop options in stream settings, but those do not promise that the same live event resumes after a reboot. Check the event’s current state before starting the encoder.
Can OBS start streaming automatically after a reboot?
OBS documents a separate --startstreaming launch parameter, with instructions for adding launch parameters to a Windows shortcut. It also recommends setting a working directory for scheduled or other automated launches. This is separate from automatic reconnect: it can start streaming when OBS is launched with the parameter, but a reliable unattended setup still needs a way to launch OBS after boot and must account for whether the internet connection is ready. Protect the gaming VOD
Check YouTube’s archive and keep a local copy
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. The 12-hour figure is YouTube’s published operational threshold, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will appear as expected. Check the archive in Studio after the stream, and make a local recording backup when the footage matters. YouTube recommends recording a local archive and checking that the file is growing during the stream. See Archive live streams and its live streaming tips.

Do not confuse DVR with the saved VOD
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, or resume during a live stream; it is not the same as the archived video. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Its guidance does not establish that two separate stream sessions will be stitched into one video, so inspect the channel archive rather than relying on continuity. See Turn on DVR on live streams.
Troubleshoot when the stream will not return
- OBS rejects the stream key: Copy the current key from YouTube Studio and update the encoder. Reset it only if needed; YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a key. Keep the key private. See Manage live stream settings and Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
- OBS connects but YouTube reports an unhealthy stream: Check OBS’s encoder errors, local audio and video, CPU load, and outbound internet connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers these checks; if OBS output appears healthy, test the network path to YouTube.
- The preview is black or the game is missing: Confirm that the correct OBS scene is active and the game capture source targets the game. OBS supports Game Capture for 3D games on Windows; test the source and confirm it shows the game before going live. Check that overlays or other sources are not covering it.
- The event says live, but there is no picture or sound: Use the Live Control Room preview and stream health to diagnose the feed. Check OBS meters and sources, and avoid repeatedly creating events or exposing and resetting the stream key without a reason.
- You cannot find the recording: Check both the local recording location and the YouTube archive in Studio. A local backup is particularly important for broadcasts over YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold.
Reduce the chance of another update interrupting a broadcast
Schedule Windows restarts outside your broadcast window and set active hours so automatic restarts are less likely while you are using the PC. Microsoft says updates cannot be stopped entirely, though Windows lets you pause updates temporarily. Do not rely on disabling security updates indefinitely; plan the restart for a time when ending a stream is acceptable. See the Windows Update FAQ.

Before the next broadcast, open OBS early, test the scene and audio, preview the YouTube feed, and confirm that a local recording file is growing. An external drive is one optional place to store a local recording; choose storage based on recording bitrate, session length, and available PC ports rather than assuming a particular drive is required to reconnect.
