Use its Media Source to repeat one recording, or its VLC Video source to rotate a playlist. Both run on a local computer, which must stay on and connected while the stream is live.
Choose the right OBS source
| Workflow | Best for | What you need | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | Repeating one sermon recording | The video file on the streaming computer | Repeats only the selected file |
| OBS VLC Video | Rotating several recordings in a set order | VLC installed, plus the files you want in the playlist | Adds a VLC installation and playlist to manage |
OBS Studio is free, open-source software for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its official project page describes it as software for video recording and live streaming. OBS documentation explains how to configure Media Sources; VLC Video supports playlists, and its loop option is on by default.
Check YouTube Live eligibility first
Before configuring OBS, enable live streaming for the church’s YouTube channel. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this step until the day of a service. See YouTube’s encoder setup and live-stream instructions.
Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key there; OBS uses them to send the video to the scheduled broadcast. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send video to the channel’s stream.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up a single repeating sermon in OBS
- Create the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and key shown for the broadcast.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service, then enter the stream key or use the available account connection. If entering server details manually, use the URL and key supplied by YouTube. Do not share the key publicly.
- Add the sermon recording. In the OBS scene you plan to broadcast, choose Sources > + > Media Source. Create a source, browse to the sermon file, and enable Loop. Confirm that the source is visible in the preview and that its audio is audible in OBS’s mixer.
- Check output and connection settings. In Settings > Video, choose a canvas and output resolution that fit the recording and the church’s upload connection. In Settings > Output, set a video bitrate the connection can sustain. YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives a 2–6 Mbps video-bitrate range for 720p at 30 fps; that range is a platform recommendation, not a promise that a particular connection can carry it reliably. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its encoder guidance also recommends RTMPS and documents H.264, H.265 and AV1 video support. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations before choosing settings for another resolution or frame rate.
- Run a test broadcast. Start the encoder and check the YouTube preview, picture, sound and stream health before the service. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Use a private or unlisted test when appropriate, and confirm the actual audience visibility setting before the event.
- Go live and monitor it. Start streaming from OBS and verify the Live Control Room indicates that the stream is arriving. Keep the computer and network available throughout; this setup streams from the local machine rather than a cloud service.
Set up a looping playlist
- Install VLC on the computer that runs OBS; OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed.
- In the OBS scene, select Sources > + > VLC Video and create the source.
- Add the sermon files to the playlist in the order you want them to play. Confirm the file paths work on the streaming computer.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then check the preview and audio mixer. Play through a transition between files during the test broadcast to catch unexpected gaps, mismatched audio levels or unsupported media.
- Connect and test the broadcast using the same YouTube stream URL and key workflow described above.
Plan for long broadcasts and keep an archive
YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive, and DVR rewind features may be limited on very long broadcasts. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and DVR guidance. If the sermon must remain available afterward, record a local copy in OBS and check that the recording is being saved to a drive with enough free space.
For an unattended or extended stream, arrange for a person to check the Live Control Room and OBS rather than assuming the broadcast will remain healthy without oversight. Internet interruptions, a sleeping computer, power loss or an OBS crash can interrupt a local stream.

Check copyright and channel rules
Confirm that the church has the rights needed to stream and archive the sermon recording, music, lyrics, slides, photographs and other third-party material. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have necessary rights, including applicable music licensing rights, and to comply with Community Guidelines and applicable laws. Permission to perform a song in person does not by itself establish permission to broadcast or archive it online.
India-specific considerations
The OBS and YouTube setup is the same workflow described above; the platform guidance does not establish a separate India-only bitrate or feature. Test the church’s actual upload connection at the intended resolution and bitrate, preferably at a time and location representative of the service. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained upload performance during a live stream.
