For a YouTube bhajan stream in 720p, start with 1280×720 at 30 fps, H.264 video at 3,000 kbps, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC audio, and RTMPS. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum H.264 video bitrate for 720p30—not as a guarantee that a 3 Mbps internet connection will stay stable. Its 20% upload-headroom guidance implies at least 3.75 Mbps of otherwise available upload for that stream, with more needed if other devices or a backup stream use the connection.
Recommended 720p settings for a low-bandwidth bhajan stream
Use these as a starting configuration for an audio-led YouTube broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists the same H.264 bitrate range for 720p30 and 720p60, but 30 fps is the more conservative starting choice when upload capacity is limited.

These are YouTube’s published encoder values, not a special preset for 24/7 devotional streams. If the stream remains unstable at the minimum bitrate, lower the resolution rather than assuming a speed-test result reflects sustained upload capacity. YouTube’s current encoder recommendations are documented in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Calculate the upload capacity you actually need
YouTube says, “The total bitrate of your streams cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” It also recommends keeping 20% upload headroom. For a 3 Mbps primary stream, that means at least 3.75 Mbps of stable upload capacity available to the stream: 3 ÷ 0.8 = 3.75. This is otherwise-available capacity, not merely the advertised speed of the connection.

- If other people or devices upload files, make calls, or stream concurrently, reserve capacity for them too.
- If you run primary and backup encoders at the same time, add their bitrates together, then allow the 20% margin. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the headroom and shared-network considerations: Streaming tips.
- A speed test is a snapshot. Test under realistic conditions and check YouTube’s stream-health messages before relying on the connection around the clock.
A mostly static devotional visual may involve less motion than camera footage, but it is not a reason to assume the configured upload bitrate will fall. Keep the actual encoder setting and test using the audio and visuals you intend to broadcast.
Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. The YouTube Live Streaming API describes stream configuration as including ingestion type, stream URLs, resolution, and frame rate: LiveStreams | YouTube Live Streaming API.
- Copy the ingest details into your encoder. Enter the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Apply the settings. Set output to 1280×720, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, and 3,000 kbps video; set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds and AAC audio. Select RTMPS if the encoder offers it.
- Test before committing to a continuous run. Use the same bhajan audio and visual style planned for the stream. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators, and listen and watch while it is live. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand; those checks are useful even when planning a continuous stream.
- Plan for interruptions. Decide how your playlist or media will loop and how the encoder will be restarted after a computer, power, or network interruption. YouTube’s guidance does not promise automatic restart or uninterrupted operation from a local setup.

Protect the devotional recordings and performances
Confirm you have the rights to broadcast each recording and performance. A bhajan’s devotional subject does not by itself make a recording free to rebroadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms say broadcasters must have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content; it may replace the stream with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate it if identified content remains. Even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID.

Plan for archives and local recordings
A 24/7 stream exceeds YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a complete recording matters, make a separate local recording and check that it is actively growing. Estimate storage from the recording bitrate and the number of hours you want to retain; an external drive or SSD can provide storage, but it does not protect against the computer, power, or network failing.
