1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can keep a prepared Gurbani video streaming to YouTube around the clock with FFmpeg on Ubuntu by publishing to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest endpoint and supervising FFmpeg with systemd. First test the media, encoder settings, network and YouTube preview; then configure automatic process restarts and monitor the service. A restart can recover a failed FFmpeg process, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast or fix an invalid source, key, network or YouTube-side problem.
What you need before starting
- An Ubuntu machine that can remain powered on and connected to the internet. It can be a local PC or a hosted server; either way, its upload connection and encoding capacity must suit the stream.
- A prepared video containing the audio and visuals you intend to stream, or separate audio and video inputs. Use only recordings and visual assets for which you have permission.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available. Eligibility and activation requirements are not established here; check the channel’s Live Control Room and current YouTube Help before planning a launch.
- A YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to version control, or include it in a public example.
Install FFmpeg for your Ubuntu release
FFmpeg is available in Ubuntu’s package archive, but package versions vary by Ubuntu release and repository updates. Ubuntu Packages lists FFmpeg version 7:6.1.1-3ubuntu5 in universe for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (noble); do not assume that version applies to another release. See Ubuntu Packages for noble.
- Identify your release with
. /etc/os-release && printf '%s %sn' "$NAME" "$VERSION_ID". - Refresh package metadata and install the repository’s FFmpeg package:
sudo apt update, thensudo apt install ffmpeg. If installation fails, check that the repositories appropriate to your release are enabled and that the package is available for that release. - Verify the installed build with
ffmpeg -version. If an encoder or protocol option used below is unavailable, inspect the build withffmpeg -encodersandffmpeg -protocols, and consult the local manual withman ffmpeg.
Choose the video and audio inputs
One file with both picture and sound
For the simplest setup, use a local file that already contains both the video and audio. Confirm it plays correctly before streaming. The command below uses stream copy: it sends the existing codecs as-is, so it avoids transcoding load but only works when the source’s codecs and properties are accepted by YouTube and appropriate for the output profile. If not, encode instead, after confirming your FFmpeg build supports the selected encoder.
Separate or repeated media
If audio and video are separate, or you need a playlist or repeated segment, first test the exact inputs and looping behavior locally. FFmpeg’s input options and filter behavior depend on the media arrangement; do not assume a command for one file will correctly synchronize separate feeds or loop a playlist. The safe sequence is to build the input and looping portion, verify continuous playback and audio/video sync, and only then add the YouTube output. For FFmpeg’s protocol and publishing syntax, see the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

Set YouTube’s ingest URL, key and encoder profile
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. Copy the current stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast; interface labels may change.
- Prefer RTMPS. YouTube documents it as its secure streaming option, and Google describes RTMPS as RTMP carried through an SSL connection. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and Google’s RTMPS developer guide.
- Choose an output profile that matches the source and can be sustained by the machine and upload connection. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); a recommended two-second keyframe interval, no longer than four seconds; and AAC or MP3 audio. For H.264, its listed bitrate guidance includes:
| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of reliable service on a particular connection. Leave upload headroom for network variation; a stated minimum is not a robust 24/7 target. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before deploying because settings can change.
Test an interactive FFmpeg publish
For a combined audio/video file already encoded in an acceptable format, a stream-copy test can look like this. Replace every placeholder locally; never paste a real key into an article, public script, shared terminal log or repository:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/gurbani-video.mp4" -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR-INGEST-URL/YOUR-STREAM-KEY"

This is a starting pattern, not a universal command. -re reads the file at its media rate, and -stream_loop -1 requests repeated input. The RTMP-family output format is used for YouTube ingest; confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS and that the URL format copied from Live Control Room is correct. The stream-copy options do not repair incompatible codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate or keyframe spacing. If the source does not meet YouTube’s profile, replace stream copy with encoding options supported by the local build, set CBR and an appropriate bitrate, and target a two-second keyframe interval within YouTube’s four-second maximum. Test the exact resulting command before making it persistent.
Recommended Free Tools
During the test, check FFmpeg’s output for input errors, encoder failures and reconnects. In Live Control Room, confirm that the preview appears, audio is continuous and synchronized, and stream health is acceptable. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, checking stream health and reviewing messages. Do not assume a successful local FFmpeg start means viewers can receive a healthy broadcast.
Keep the stream key out of the command and restrict access
Putting a key directly in a shell command can expose it through shell history or process inspection. For a basic systemd setup, place the ingest URL and key in a root-readable environment file and reference it from the service. Create the file with sudo install -m 600 /dev/null /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env, then edit it as root and add values such as INGEST_URL=rtmps://... and STREAM_KEY=.... Keep the file private, do not commit it, and avoid copying its contents into logs or support requests. Use the complete output URL assembled from those values in the service command. If a key is exposed, replace or revoke it in YouTube’s Live Control Room.

Run FFmpeg under systemd
A system service can start FFmpeg at boot and relaunch it after a process failure. This example assumes the tested command uses one combined file and stream copy. Adapt the paths, user and output options to your tested setup; do not use an unverified command as a permanent service.
- Create a dedicated service account if practical, ensure it can read the media and environment file, and choose a stable media path. For a simple existing-user setup, substitute that account for
YOUR_USERbelow. - Create
/etc/systemd/system/gurbani-stream.servicewith a root-owned editor. Example unit:[Unit]
Description=Gurbani YouTube stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target[Service]
Type=simple
User=YOUR_USER
EnvironmentFile=/etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/gurbani-video.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv ${INGEST_URL}/${STREAM_KEY}

WantedBy=multi-user.target - Check the unit carefully before enabling it. In particular, confirm the actual FFmpeg path with
command -v ffmpeg, verify that the service account can read the media, and ensure the URL/key variable expansion works in the service’s command context. systemd does not runExecStartthrough a shell, so shell-style variable concatenation may not work as written. A safer deployment is to use a root-owned wrapper script that reads protected configuration and execs FFmpeg, or provide the output URL through a mechanism that avoids shell expansion; then pointExecStartto that executable wrapper. Restrict wrapper and configuration permissions and never print the key. - Reload and start the service:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload,sudo systemctl enable --now gurbani-stream.service. Inspect it withsystemctl status gurbani-stream.serviceand recent logs withjournalctl -u gurbani-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager.
Restart=always is a policy choice, not a fix for every failure: a bad file, revoked key or persistent network problem can cause repeated restarts. Watch the journal and YouTube health panel, and avoid leaving a restart loop unexplained. FFmpeg and systemd operational examples vary by release and configuration; compare the service with your system’s manual and test it under the account it will use.

Prove recovery before relying on it
- Stop and restart the service deliberately; verify it starts at boot and reaches YouTube preview.
- Test a process failure and observe whether systemd relaunches FFmpeg and whether YouTube accepts the reconnect. Process recovery does not itself guarantee uninterrupted availability.
- Check representative audio, visuals, sync and stream-health messages both before and after a reconnect.
- Inspect logs for malformed inputs, permission errors, unsupported encoders or protocols, authentication failures and repeated disconnects.
- Confirm the key remains absent from public files, repositories and routine logs.
Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg cannot open the file
Check the path, file permissions and local playback. If the service runs as a dedicated or different user, test file access as that user and ensure the media remains available after reboot.
The RTMPS connection fails or YouTube shows no preview
Re-copy the current ingest URL and key from Live Control Room, verify there are no accidental spaces or stale credentials, and check that the installed FFmpeg build lists the required protocol. Confirm outbound network access and inspect FFmpeg logs without exposing the key.
The stream connects but health is poor
Compare the actual output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Check upload stability and leave headroom; reducing resolution or bitrate may help when the source, encoder or connection cannot sustain the chosen profile.

Audio is missing, intermittent or out of sync
Test the source locally, confirm that the intended audio stream is selected, and verify the output uses an accepted audio codec such as AAC or MP3. For separate inputs or complex loops, validate synchronization and continuity locally before reconnecting YouTube.
The service repeatedly restarts
Use systemctl status and journalctl to distinguish an FFmpeg crash from a bad input, permissions issue, invalid key or unavailable network. Fix the underlying cause; a restart policy can relaunch a process, not repair its configuration or dependencies.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want an Ubuntu computer or home connection to stay on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. The setup is upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube, not from a live camera. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
