To rotate cartoon episodes on a YouTube livestream, put authorized video files into an OBS Studio VLC Video source, choose ordered or shuffled playback, and enable Loop Playlist. Then schedule the YouTube live event and connect OBS with the event’s server URL and stream key. That creates a repeating playlist; keeping it live around the clock also depends on the computer, power, network, encoder, rights, and YouTube’s live-stream checks.
Before building the rotation: confirm broadcast rights
Only include episodes you are authorized to livestream on YouTube. Rights to watch an episode, own a copy, or find it online do not by themselves establish permission to broadcast it. Check that your license covers the specific episodes, livestream use, platform, and territories where viewers may watch.
YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility for necessary rights on the content provider, including applicable music rights. A license also does not guarantee that YouTube’s automated checks will leave the stream uninterrupted.
Prepare episodes and choose a daily pattern
Make a folder containing only the files you have cleared for the rotation. Use filenames that make the intended sequence obvious—for example, episode numbers or titles—and decide whether viewers should encounter the same order each day or a different sequence.

- Fixed order: useful when the order matters or you want a predictable sequence. A playlist loops back to its first item after the last.
- Shuffle: useful when variety matters more than a fixed sequence. Review the resulting playback behavior before relying on it for a continuous channel.
OBS documents support for common local video formats and a VLC Video source that can play multiple items with loop and shuffle controls. These are playback controls, not a calendar: the cited OBS documentation does not describe assigning different playlists to daily time slots.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, select a scene, use the Sources panel’s add control, and choose VLC Video. Give the source a clear name.
- Add authorized episode files. In the source properties, add the files in the desired order. Use the playlist controls to move items if needed.
- Choose playback behavior. Leave shuffle off for the listed order, or enable it for randomized playback. Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the playlist after its final item.
- Check the scene and audio. Confirm the picture fits the canvas, the audio is audible and not clipping, and the source is visible in the scene. Preview the sequence through file boundaries before going live.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation distinguishes the VLC Video source from a Media Source that loops one file. For a multi-item rotation, use VLC Video rather than treating a single-file loop as a playlist.

Schedule the YouTube event and connect OBS
- Schedule a live event in YouTube Studio. Scheduling can create a public watch page and let viewers set reminders. Follow YouTube’s current event setup flow for visibility and audience settings.
- Get the encoder details. In the event’s stream settings, obtain the live server URL and stream key.
- Connect OBS. In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube if available, or use the custom server option; enter the server URL and stream key supplied for the event.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Confirm the event receives video and sound, and verify that the intended playlist is playing before you start the public broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder help page describes connecting an encoder with the server URL and stream key. It says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior is not a promise that a single broadcast can run forever, nor does it prevent interruptions.
Verify continuity before calling it 24/7
A looping playlist handles playback repetition; it does not by itself ensure an uninterrupted broadcast. With a local OBS setup, the computer must remain on and operating, OBS must keep encoding, the media files must remain available, and the network connection must stay usable. Power, host, network, configuration, and source failures can stop or degrade the output.

- Check that the playlist advances at episode boundaries and returns to the start after the last item.
- Confirm what viewers see if a file is missing, ends unexpectedly, or has no audio.
- Keep the machine and connection available for the planned broadcast and have a way to check the event if it stops.
These checks reduce avoidable setup errors; they do not establish an uptime guarantee. YouTube documents a separate hosted-calendar workflow as well, but vendor documentation alone is not independent evidence of uptime or comparative performance.
Copyright checks, interruptions, and monetization
YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may show a placeholder, warn the creator, temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream, or take further action after a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. If you have a license for third-party material, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to reduce the chance of interruption. A license alone may not stop an automated interruption. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to livestreams and assess whether content is original and authentic. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified that its former “repetitious content” policy is called “inauthentic content” and includes repetitive or mass-produced material. Repeating licensed cartoons therefore does not establish that a channel is eligible to earn ad revenue. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

A local playlist is the documented DIY route for controlling a multi-file rotation. A hosted playout calendar is another possible approach when you need recurring schedule slots. Compare what each setup actually documents and verify service terms, current pricing, destinations, and recovery behavior before committing.
