The VPS replaces the always-on computer, not the encoder or the need to test the stream. If the stream is for YouTube, configure the remote encoder with the correct live ingest URL and stream key, verify the output, and only then stop the local encoder.
Choose the workflow that matches your aarti stream
OBS sends its output directly from the computer running OBS to the streaming service; a VPS simply makes that computer remote. Keep OBS when the stream is assembled from scenes and sources. For a prerecorded recording or playlist, a headless FFmpeg process may be a simpler fit, but validate the media and loop behavior on the system you choose. For a live camera or audio feed, identify how the feed will reach the remote encoder before selecting a setup. A VPS does not make peripherals connected to your home PC appear as devices connected to the server.
Inventory the current setup before moving it
Write down what the local PC actually sends, rather than assuming that the stream is a simple video loop. This list determines what must be recreated and what server resources and network capacity to assess.

- Source type: prerecorded media, live camera or audio, or a mixed OBS production.
- Media files, playlists, scene sources, overlays, and audio routing.
- Output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and ingest protocol.
- Any scheduled restarts, process recovery, or other continuity behavior you currently rely on.
- Your archive needs, including whether the stream must remain one uninterrupted session.
Select and prepare the VPS
Compare options against the real workload, not an assumed universal server specification. Check sustained outbound transfer and network stability, CPU or GPU encoding capacity, storage for media, server region, remote administration, recovery provisions, and total cost. Current provider prices, availability, or uptime are not established here, so verify them directly with any provider before committing.
- Choose the workflow. Decide whether to recreate the OBS setup or run a headless media loop. Keep the ingest protocol the same unless you have a specific reason and encoder support to change it.
- Install and transfer. Set up the intended encoder and copy only the scene assets or media the stream needs. For OBS, rebuild and inspect the scenes on the VPS; devices attached to the local PC will not automatically be attached to the VPS.
- Validate the media process. For FFmpeg, check the files on the chosen system and confirm that playback repeats as intended. The third-party walkthrough is context, not a guarantee that its steps fit your operating system, media, or server.
- Keep remote access practical. Make sure you can inspect the encoder and recover access without depending on a monitor or peripherals at the VPS host.
Configure YouTube and test the remote encoder
If YouTube is your destination, use the live control room to identify the intended stream or event and its ingest details. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the live server URL and stream key in the encoder, then start the encoder and verify the live output: YouTube encoder instructions. Treat the stream key as a secret; do not publish it or leave it in material you share.

- In the remote encoder, enter the correct YouTube live server URL and stream key for the stream you intend to run.
- Start the VPS encoder while keeping the local stream available as a rollback option.
- Check the platform preview and playback, and inspect the encoder status. Confirm both picture and aarti audio at the destination.
- If the test is clean, stop the local encoder so it does not continue sending a competing feed. Keep a practical rollback path until the VPS output is confirmed.
OBS’s connection guidance says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Test the actual output; if frames drop, try another ingest server or lower the configured bitrate, then check again: OBS Project Help. There is no universal bitrate established for this migration; use settings appropriate to your output and the connection you have measured.
Keep the encoder change separate from an HLS change
Moving to a VPS does not require changing protocols. If you intentionally select YouTube HLS ingestion and your encoder supports it, follow YouTube’s current HLS requirements rather than applying them to an RTMP setup. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because video is transmitted in segments. Its HLS guidance specifies TS segments, segment durations of 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; it also lists HEVC or H.264 video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio as supported formats. Plan recovery and archives as separate jobs
A VPS keeps the encoder off your local PC, but it does not by itself guarantee recovery after a server, process, network, or YouTube interruption. Decide how you will notice a stopped output and restart or restore it, and verify that your chosen host and encoder support the recovery behavior you need.
YouTube’s encoder instructions state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a single uninterrupted 24/7 session being archived in full; check YouTube’s current behavior and plan separately if you need a complete long-form archive.
