There is no single FFmpeg switch that makes every part of a 24/7 stream reconnect. Match the recovery method to the failure: HTTP input reconnect options for a dropped HTTP source, the FIFO muxer for temporary RTMP output failures, -stream_loop -1 to repeat a local file, and an operating-system service manager to restart FFmpeg if the process exits. These are separate layers, and none can fix persistent errors such as a bad stream key or a missing source file.
Identify which part of the stream needs to recover
Before changing the command, identify the input and output protocols and decide what failure you need to handle. A local music file that reaches its end, an HTTP source that disconnects, an RTMP destination that becomes temporarily unreachable, and an FFmpeg process that exits require different responses.

The options below follow the current FFmpeg documentation checked on October 3, 2026. Installed or custom FFmpeg builds can differ, so confirm support in the version you actually run.
Loop a local music file and recover a temporary RTMP output failure
For one local track going to an RTMP destination, this illustrative pattern combines an infinite input loop with FIFO output recovery:

"rtmp://YOUR_HOST/YOUR_APP/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"-stream_loop -1means loop the input indefinitely. It applies to the next input, so place it before-i.-rereads the file at its native rate, rather than as fast as possible.-vndisables video for this audio-only example. The AAC codec, 128k bitrate, and RTMP endpoint are illustrative; replace them with settings supported by your destination.-f fifo -fifo_format flvuses the FIFO muxer with FLV formatting for the RTMP output.-attempt_recovery 1enables output recovery. With-recovery_wait_time 1, FFmpeg waits one second between recovery attempts; FFmpeg’s documented example retries indefinitely at that interval.
This combined command is an adaptation of documented options, not a verified configuration for a particular Hindi-music service or destination. Protect the stream key: do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs.
Choose queue behavior deliberately
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 lets encoding continue if the output queue fills, but packets can be lost, causing missing audio or video. Without packet dropping, the encoder can instead block while the muxer catches up. Neither choice guarantees uninterrupted playback; check what listeners receive after a recovery.

Using multiple tracks
Looping one file does not create a shuffled or gapless radio playlist. Choose a playlist or other source strategy for the order and metadata you need, then test track transitions and reconnection against the actual destination. Do not assume either shuffle or gapless playback without verifying it.

-i "https://YOUR_HTTP_SOURCE" ...OUTPUT_OPTIONS...These HTTP protocol options address disconnects before end-of-file, end-of-file on an endless stream, and streamed or non-seekable inputs. The example sets a maximum reconnect delay of 30 seconds; that is a configuration choice, not a reliability figure. FFmpeg also documents -reconnect_on_http_error for selected status codes, including 4xx and 5xx groups, as well as -reconnect_max_retries and -reconnect_delay_total_max for limiting retries.
Choose status codes and retry limits to suit the source provider. Check that your installed FFmpeg build supports the options and that the provider permits reconnecting. These are HTTP input settings, not universal RTMP output recovery options, and the example is not a tested configuration for a specific Hindi-music source.

Restart FFmpeg if the process exits
Input reconnect and FIFO recovery operate inside FFmpeg. If the process itself exits, those options cannot restart it. Configure your operating system’s service manager separately, and verify its behavior for your host OS and service-manager version.
- Confirm the restart policy and delay.
- Check any start limits and what happens when they are reached.
- Verify that the service starts at boot if that is required.
- Review where service logs go and how to inspect them.
- Test a controlled process exit and confirm that the expected restart occurs.
No single service-manager recipe applies to every OS, and exact systemd unit directives are not included here. A service manager can restart a process, but it cannot correct a bad stream key, incompatible output settings, or an unavailable source file. If a persistent error remains, repeated restarts will not restore the stream.

Verify recovery end to end
- Check the endpoints. Record whether the source is a local file or HTTP input and whether the destination is RTMP or another protocol. Select recovery options for those specific protocols.
- Check your FFmpeg build. Inspect the installed version and its local help or documentation; packaged and custom builds may differ from the online documentation.
- Run the command manually. Confirm that the destination accepts it and that audio is playable before relying on supervision.
- Test the relevant failure. Check separately that an input reconnects, an output recovers, or a service manager restarts an exited process, depending on what you configured.
- Monitor actual playback. Review logs and check the destination or listen from a client. A running FFmpeg process alone does not prove that valid audio is reaching listeners.
Also consider the host’s network stability, bandwidth, and power continuity. These are deployment concerns; no particular hardware purchase is required by the recovery options described here.
Troubleshoot common recovery failures
