Choose OBS if you are capturing a game live and want to compose scenes in a graphical interface. Choose FFmpeg if you are sending prepared gameplay video through a scripted, repeatable pipeline. Neither choice alone guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast or a complete YouTube archive. For a VOD you cannot afford to lose, configure a separate local recording and verify both that file and YouTube’s archive.
Which tool fits your gaming channel?
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Capture a game as you play, switch layouts, and manage sources visually | OBS Studio | OBS uses scenes and sources to compose the broadcast, including game and capture-card inputs. It also provides graphical streaming and recording controls. OBS Studio Overview Guide (dated 2021-08-25). |
| Loop an existing gameplay recording as a live input | FFmpeg | Its -stream_loop -1 option repeats an input indefinitely, and -re reads at the input’s native frame rate. Those options do not create a graphical game-capture workflow or a complete, supervised YouTube service. FFmpeg Documentation. |
| Prefer a repeatable command-line media pipeline | FFmpeg | It provides command-line media processing and control, but you must plan process supervision, stream recovery, ingest settings, and recording separately. |
| Prefer a visual interface and on-screen controls | OBS Studio | It is more approachable for scene-based work, although configuration and monitoring are still required. |
The relative-complexity judgment reflects the tools’ documented interfaces and features, not a benchmark or hands-on comparison. If you want a continuous feed of prerecorded gameplay rather than live play, FFmpeg’s looping option is directly relevant; if you need to capture and arrange live game visuals, OBS is the clearer starting point.
Set up OBS for live gameplay and a local VOD
- Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream configuration. YouTube says prior stream settings, including a stream key, can be reused. Treat the key like a password and do not share it. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Build the output from scenes and sources. Add the game capture source for PC gameplay. Add a capture-card source only if you are bringing in a console or other external video input; it is not required for direct PC game capture. Add audio devices or overlays only if your broadcast needs them.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate your PC and connection can sustain. Higher frame rates can demand substantially more system resources. OBS warns that “60-fps streaming can be very taxing on your system compared to 30-fps.” Test gameplay performance and the finished output before relying on a setting for a long broadcast.
- Set encoder output using YouTube’s current recommendations. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, constant bitrate (CBR), supported codecs, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Select a bitrate appropriate to codec, resolution, and frame rate; published figures are starting recommendations, not a guarantee that your upload connection can sustain them. The table below reproduces figures from YouTube Help as accessed in 2026. Check its current encoder settings page before configuring a new stream.
- Enable local recording independently of streaming. Configure OBS’s recording path and recording settings, and enable automatic recording while streaming if that suits your workflow. Confirm the destination has room for the session. Make a test recording and play it back to verify that it contains the expected picture and audio.
- Test before going live, then monitor stream health. Run a test with representative game motion and audio. Check the encoder preview and YouTube stream health, and test how OBS behaves after a brief disconnect. Automatic reconnect can help, but it is not a guarantee against every outage.
- Start the scheduled broadcast in YouTube Studio. Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then click Go live when you are ready. An encoder sending video is not necessarily the same as a scheduled stream being made live. Follow YouTube’s current live-stream steps.
YouTube video bitrate recommendations
| Output | H.264 minimum / recommended | AV1 or H.265 minimum / recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 / 8 Mbps | 2 / 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 / 14 Mbps | 4 / 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 / 17 Mbps | 4 / 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 8 / 34 Mbps | 6 / 24 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s published minimum and recommended video bitrates, as accessed in 2026—not measurements of your connection or promised results. YouTube also lists frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video. Test your available upload bitrate and leave headroom for connection variation; use a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the connection or encoder cannot sustain the target reliably. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings for the current table and full settings.
Use FFmpeg to loop prerecorded gameplay
FFmpeg’s official manual defines -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping of an input stream and -re as reading the input at its native frame rate. The latter can be useful when output packet timing matters, including live streaming. These are building blocks, not a complete 24/7 YouTube recipe: the manual’s options do not supply a complete YouTube reconnect or process-supervision system.

- Prepare and validate the source file. Confirm it plays correctly and that its codecs and container can be used with your intended output and YouTube ingest configuration.
- Choose whether to re-encode or copy. Stream copy with
-c copyavoids decoding and re-encoding, so it is fast and does not introduce additional encoding loss. It may fail when the destination container needs information that is not available from the source, so test the exact input and output combination. - Configure looping and pacing. Use
-stream_loop -1to repeat the input and-rewhen you need FFmpeg to read at native frame rate for timed output. Confirm the resulting video and audio are accepted by the ingest configuration. - Provide YouTube’s ingest details securely. Use the server URL and stream key from the relevant YouTube stream. Keep the key private, and test the scheduled stream in Live Control Room before relying on it.
- Add supervision, recovery, and a backup plan. Decide how the process will be restarted if FFmpeg exits or the connection drops, how you will notice a failure, and how you will save an independent recording. The loop option does not solve those operational tasks.
For a custom command, verify options against the FFmpeg manual and test with the actual media and YouTube stream. No single command can be assumed to suit every file, codec, container, or channel setup.
Plan for the VOD separately from the live broadcast
YouTube Help says: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its documentation does not promise a complete automatic archive for broadcasts longer than 12 hours. A continuous channel that runs beyond that threshold should not depend on YouTube auto-archive as its only copy.

- Keep a local recording when having a complete VOD matters; configure and test OBS recording separately from the stream.
- For an FFmpeg pipeline, define a separate recording output and validate its container, file integrity, available storage, and behavior if the stream process fails.
- After a test session, inspect and play the local file and check the YouTube archive. Do not infer archive completeness from the fact that the live broadcast appeared normally.
- Consider copyright before broadcasting or saving gameplay that contains music, cutscenes, or other third-party material. A live stream and its archived copy can both raise rights issues; use material you are permitted to broadcast and review YouTube’s applicable rules.
The archive condition is documented in YouTube’s encoder-stream help page.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no video or the scheduled broadcast does not start | Wrong server URL or stream key, encoder not sending, or the scheduled broadcast has not been started from Live Control Room. | Check the stream details in YouTube Studio, confirm the encoder is sending, wait for preview, then use Go live when ready. Regenerate or replace a key if it may have been exposed. |
| Stream health reports unstable bitrate or video drops | Upload capacity is insufficient or variable, or the selected output is too demanding. | Test upload performance, reduce bitrate or output demands, and leave headroom. Compare the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate with YouTube’s published recommendations. |
| OBS game capture is missing or performance degrades | Capture source or scene configuration is wrong, or the chosen frame rate taxes the system. | Check the active scene and source, test the game capture before broadcasting, and compare 30 fps with 60 fps under representative load. |
| FFmpeg stops at the end of a clip | The input loop option is missing, misplaced, or the chosen input does not behave as expected. | Check the command and input against the FFmpeg manual; test the actual file and confirm it repeats before connecting the long-running pipeline. |
| FFmpeg exits or the feed stays down after a disconnect | Looping input does not supervise the process or guarantee reconnection. | Inspect process logs and connection state; configure an external restart/monitoring approach and test recovery behavior before depending on it. |
| The VOD is incomplete or absent | The session exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive condition, or the local recording was not configured or verified. | Use a separate local recording, test playback and file integrity, and check YouTube’s archive rather than assuming it is complete. |
