You can run a 24/7 YouTube channel from a Mac mini by using OBS Studio to loop prerecorded video and send it to YouTube Live. The Mac must stay awake, OBS and the internet connection must keep working, and you need a plan for stream interruptions and replays. Before launch, enable livestreaming on the channel and set the audience designation accurately for the actual content.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until launch day. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the process.
- OBS Studio installed on the Mac mini, plus the prerecorded video and any graphics or audio you intend to use.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the bitrate you choose. No universal upload-speed figure is established for every combination of resolution, frame rate, and encoder.
- A plan to keep the Mac awake and to respond if OBS, the Mac, power, internet, or YouTube stream connection fails.
A Mac mini is the encoder host: OBS sends the program feed to YouTube. Suitability depends on the specific Mac, media, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity; the model’s performance for your workload should be checked rather than assumed.
Set up YouTube Live and OBS
1. Enable livestreaming and create the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, enable livestreaming if this is the first time the channel will stream. Allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio. For a scheduled event, you will start the encoder first, then check its preview in Live Control Room and use the Go live control when ready.
- Find the stream URL and stream key in the stream’s encoder settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Do not post it publicly or include it in screenshots.
2. Build a looping scene
- Open OBS and create a scene for the channel’s program.
- Add a Media Source for the prerecorded video and configure it to loop. Add title or branding elements only if needed.
- Play the scene and check that the video returns to the beginning as intended. Listen to the audio and confirm that levels are clear and not clipping.
OBS’s exact media-source controls can vary by version. The essential check is that your chosen source loops correctly in the scene before you send it live.
3. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream.
- Select YouTube if it is offered as a service and connect the account, or choose the option to use a stream key. If entering details manually, copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the matching OBS fields.
- Apply the settings, return to the main OBS window, and start streaming. For an immediate-start stream, YouTube says starting the encoder begins the live stream and creates its watch page. For a scheduled stream, verify the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live there.
Keep the stream key private and confirm that OBS is sending to the intended channel before starting a long broadcast.

Choose settings your connection and Mac can sustain
There is no single safe bitrate or resolution for every Mac mini and internet connection. Select a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your encoder can produce and your upload connection can sustain, then test the actual stream in YouTube’s preview before relying on it. A higher target is not useful if the Mac or connection cannot maintain it.
- Bitrate: Start conservatively enough to leave headroom on the upload connection. OBS explains that an increasing dropped-frames counter with a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection to the server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. See the OBS Help Portal.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the output to the source and the workload the Mac can reliably encode. Confirm the result in a live test; performance is not established for every Mac mini model or scene.
- Connection: Use wired Ethernet where practical to avoid some wireless variability. It is a practical stability measure, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
- Keyframes and other encoder values: Use YouTube’s current recommended encoder settings for the selected stream format, and verify them in YouTube Studio before launch. The setup guidance cited here does not establish one set of values for every encoding configuration.
Keep the Mac mini awake and monitor the stream
Prevent automatic sleep
On a desktop Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Energy and enable “Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off” if that option is available. Menu labels and availability can vary by Mac model and macOS version. Apple notes that preventing sleep may increase power consumption. See Apple’s sleep and wake settings guide.

Check OBS and YouTube during operation
- Watch OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frame counter. If dropped frames rise, check the network and whether the selected bitrate is sustainable.
- Check the YouTube live preview and stream health after starting and periodically while the broadcast runs.
- Decide who will notice and respond to a power loss, internet outage, OBS crash, or stream disconnect. A Mac-based setup depends on the Mac, power, connection, OBS process, and configuration all continuing to work; wired networking and sleep settings do not guarantee uptime.
Plan for 24-hour operation, interruptions, and replays
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish that a single broadcast longer than 12 hours will be archived, so do not count on one uninterrupted 24-hour stream becoming a replay. Confirm current archive behavior in YouTube Studio before relying on it.
For a continuous channel, decide how you will handle stream length and recovery before going live: whether to end and restart scheduled segments, who will restart the encoder after a disruption, and whether you need a local recording as a separate copy. Test the chosen workflow on the channel. Do not assume OBS or YouTube will automatically recover every interruption or preserve every long broadcast as an archive.

Set the audience designation correctly
YouTube requires creators to designate whether content is made for kids. The decision should reflect the actual intended audience and content, not simply whether a video is safe for families. YouTube identifies factors including the subject matter, child actors, characters or toys, language, activities, songs, stories, and advertising; creators are responsible for setting the audience accurately. A channel intentionally aimed at children should not be labeled general audience just because adults may also watch. This does not determine the legal status of a particular channel. Review YouTube’s guidance on determining whether content is made for kids.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Livestreaming is unavailable on the channel | First-time activation may still be processing. | Enable livestreaming ahead of launch and allow up to 24 hours for activation. |
| OBS is not sending a signal to YouTube | Wrong service, server URL, stream key, or destination channel. | Compare OBS’s Stream settings with the current encoder details in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private. |
| OBS shows rising dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator | Unstable connection or bitrate beyond the connection’s capacity. | Check network stability, use Ethernet where possible, and lower the bitrate until the connection can sustain it. |
| The stream stops when the display goes off or the Mac is unattended | The Mac may have entered sleep. | Review System Settings > Energy and enable the prevent-sleep option if available; verify the Mac stays awake during a test. |
| A 24-hour broadcast is not available as one replay | YouTube’s stated automatic archive condition covers streams under 12 hours, not longer ones. | Check current Studio behavior and plan tested segments or a separate local recording if you need a replay. |
| The stream is labeled general audience despite being designed for children | Audience designation may not reflect the actual target audience. | Reassess the content using YouTube’s audience factors and correct the setting in Studio. |
DIY OBS or cloud playout?
Running OBS locally gives you direct control over the scene and source media, but continuity depends on the Mac mini, power, home internet, OBS, and your stream configuration. Cloud playout shifts the encoding and looping operation away from your home computer, but adds an external service and its account and network dependencies. YouTube’s encoder setup page lists cloud services as options; verify any provider’s current availability, features, pricing, and terms directly. A listing by YouTube is not an independent reliability guarantee or endorsement.
