You can run a continuous Indian music broadcast by playing a rights-cleared playlist from a persistent Google Cloud Compute Engine virtual machine (VM) and sending its output to YouTube Live with an encoder such as FFmpeg. The VM keeps the encoder running in the cloud; YouTube receives the stream through the server URL and stream key shown in your channel’s Live Control Room. For this straightforward design, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is not required.
Before configuring anything, secure the rights for the actual music, territories, and livestream use. YouTube may interrupt or terminate a stream that contains unapproved third-party material, even when the operator has a copy of the music.
Choose the Google Cloud architecture
For a radio-style stream, the simplest design is a VM running an encoder continuously. The encoder reads your playlist or audio/video files, produces a YouTube-compatible live feed, and pushes it to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Your YouTube channel’s stream URL and key connect the two services.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a different, managed transcoding and packaging service. It accepts an encoder’s input and produces configured outputs; it is not another name for YouTube’s ingest service, and an API output does not automatically feed YouTube. Choose the protocol and destination for each leg deliberately.

| Option | What it does | What you operate | Main continuity concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compute Engine VM with software encoder | Reads media and pushes a YouTube-compatible feed directly to YouTube Live. | The VM, encoder process, playlist, stream-key security, supervision, and monitoring. | Recovering from a VM, process, or network failure. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API | Accepts an encoder input over RTMP_PUSH or SRT_PUSH, then transcodes or packages output according to the managed channel configuration. | The input encoder plus API project, credentials, channel configuration, and output connection. | Managing the channel lifecycle, API quotas, and the documented session limit. |
Google recommends SRT for Live Stream API input where possible because it supports packet-loss recovery and related features; the encoder must support it. YouTube separately documents RTMP-style URL-and-key setup and an HLS ingest option. HLS has specific playlist and segment requirements and higher latency than continuous RTMP. Do not assume that an HLS output from one service is accepted by another: verify the selected encoder’s output protocol and the destination’s current requirements.
Clear music rights before you schedule the broadcast
YouTube’s livestream terms require the broadcaster to have the necessary rights to exploit the live content on Google services worldwide, including applicable music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. That requirement applies to the catalog you actually plan to broadcast, not just to the channel or the playlist software.

- Identify the rights holders and obtain permissions for the tracks, territories, and continuous livestream use. Rights and licensing arrangements vary by catalog and territory; there is no universal Indian-music clearance process established here.
- Coordinate with relevant rights holders about Content ID allowlisting when needed. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the picture, interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it. Having a license does not necessarily prevent a Content ID interruption unless the rights holder has arranged the appropriate channel treatment.
- Do not assume that buying a track, subscribing to a music service, or holding a Creator Music license authorizes a 24/7 radio-style live stream. Confirm that the specific permission covers this use.
- Keep written records of licenses, permitted territories, dates, and any Content ID arrangements so you can respond if a claim or interruption occurs.
If you cannot establish permission for every track and relevant use, remove it from the stream until you can. Technical configuration does not resolve a rights dispute.
Prepare YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming for the channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the planned launch time. Check the channel for restrictions that could prevent streaming.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Confirm the intended visibility and event details before configuring the encoder.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. These are channel-specific connection details; use the values displayed for your own event rather than values copied from a guide.
- Protect the key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, put it in screenshots, or expose it in a public script or repository. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration.
Provision a persistent Google Cloud VM
- Create or select a Google Cloud project and enable billing. Choose a VM size and region based on the encoder, source files, storage, network use, and availability you need. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API quickstart lists
asia-south1as a supported region; check current service and region availability when deploying rather than assuming every feature is available in every region. - Install an encoder on the VM. FFmpeg is one option for reading media and sending a compatible output to YouTube. Keep the source playlist and its files accessible to the VM, and ensure the operating system and encoder remain available for unattended operation.
- Keep credentials out of exposed files. Restrict access to the VM and to any configuration containing the YouTube stream key. Avoid placing secrets in public scripts, logs, or shared project locations.
- Enable the Live Stream API only if you chose that architecture. For the managed API route, configure the Google Cloud project, billing, API access, credentials, permissions, and an API input stream. Its encoder sends RTMP_PUSH or SRT_PUSH to the API’s input endpoint; the API’s configured output is a separate leg that must be connected deliberately to the intended destination.
The VM route does not require enabling the Live Stream API simply to push an encoder feed to YouTube. Keep the deployment as small as the chosen architecture allows, and verify the current Google Cloud service documentation for the resources and permissions your configuration needs.

Configure, test, and launch the encoder
- Set the YouTube destination. In your encoder, enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Select an output protocol supported by both the encoder and destination.
- Match output settings to the media and YouTube’s current guidance. Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, audio format, bitrate, and keyframe interval that YouTube currently accepts and that your source material can sustain. These values depend on the output format and intended quality; do not copy a bitrate preset blindly if it does not match the media or YouTube’s current recommendations.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends keeping 20% spare upload bandwidth for live streaming. Check the VM’s available outbound capacity against the encoder’s sustained output, not just a short speed-test peak.
- Test in Live Control Room before relying on unattended playback. Start the encoder, check the preview and stream health indicators, listen for clipping, silence, or imbalance, and confirm the expected video or still-image behavior. Open the viewer playback page as well and verify that it plays as intended.
- Test the playlist transition. Check that the final item returns to the beginning cleanly, that the next item starts with usable audio, and that the stream behaves as expected if a file is missing or an item has a different format. Resolve these issues before scheduling a long-running broadcast.
- Start the scheduled stream and observe it through a meaningful period. Confirm the live status, stable playback, and encoder output before leaving the VM unattended.
Make the broadcast recoverable and observable
A cloud VM is not, by itself, a 24/7 continuity plan. A stopped encoder, VM restart, network issue, full disk, or inaccessible playlist can still take the channel offline. Configure process supervision so the encoder can restart after a failure, decide how it should behave after a VM reboot, and monitor both the process and the YouTube playback state. Set alerts that reach someone able to intervene; unattended does not mean unmonitored.
- Use a supervisor or service manager to restart the encoder after an unexpected exit, and verify that restart behavior does not create competing encoder processes.
- Monitor VM health, encoder errors, storage capacity, and whether the YouTube stream is actually live. A running process alone does not prove viewers can see and hear the broadcast.
- Keep a recovery path for updating the stream key, replacing a damaged media file, and restarting the broadcast safely.
- Document who responds to alerts and how to reach the VM and Live Control Room if the stream fails.
If you use Google Cloud Live Stream API, its documented running-session limit is 24 hours, after which a channel may need to be restarted. That limit applies to the managed API; it should not be generalized to every Compute Engine VM or every YouTube encoder session. Separately, YouTube automatically archives livestreams under 12 hours. A continuous 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as one guaranteed, intact archive; plan recordings or archive handling around YouTube’s stated limit.

Estimate Google Cloud costs before leaving the stream on
No single VM price is reliable without knowing the machine size, region, uptime, storage, and network egress. Estimate compute-hours for the expected run time, storage for source media and any recordings, and outbound network usage using Google’s current pricing tools before deployment. Include time for testing and recovery, not only the planned broadcast hours. If you use Live Stream API, evaluate the resources and configuration for that managed service separately from the VM and network costs.
For a 24/7 deployment, review the estimate under continuous monthly use and confirm which resources continue billing when a stream is idle or stopped. Recheck the estimate if you change resolution, encoder settings, playlist size, region, or architecture; do not treat a cost figure from a different workload as your own.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room does not receive video | Incorrect server URL or key, unsupported output protocol, or encoder not sending. | Copy the current URL and key from the correct event, verify the encoder destination and protocol, and check its logs for connection errors. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| The stream starts, then drops or buffers | Insufficient upload headroom, unstable VM/network conditions, or encoder output interruptions. | Check sustained outbound capacity against the configured bitrate, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% spare bandwidth, and inspect VM and encoder monitoring for interruptions. |
| Video is present but audio is silent, distorted, or inconsistent | Incorrect audio input or output settings, a source file issue, or large differences between playlist items. | Listen to the encoder output and YouTube preview, check audio levels and settings, then test each transition and replace or normalize problematic source files as appropriate. |
| The API input is accepted but YouTube is not receiving a stream | The managed API output and YouTube ingest are separate endpoints, or the selected protocols do not match. | Trace both legs independently: encoder to API input, then configured API output to its intended destination. Confirm the protocol and endpoint pairings for each leg. |
| The broadcast is interrupted after music is detected | Third-party content has triggered YouTube’s live scanning or Content ID handling. | Follow YouTube’s notice, stop using the affected material until rights are confirmed, and coordinate with the relevant rights holder about channel allowlisting where applicable. |
| The encoder does not return after a VM reboot | The process was started interactively rather than configured for supervised restart, or the VM did not start as expected. | Check VM status and boot behavior, configure and test process supervision, and verify the encoder can access its media and credentials after restart. |
Questions to settle before launch
- Is Google Cloud Live Stream API necessary? Not for the direct VM design: a compatible encoder can push to YouTube using the channel’s URL and key. Use the API only if its managed transcoding and packaging workflow is part of the architecture you need.
- Can I use a stream key from another channel or event? Use the channel- and event-specific details shown in your own Live Control Room. Do not rely on a copied key or assume an old key remains valid.
- Can I count on one recording of an unbroken 24/7 stream? No. YouTube’s automatic archiving guidance covers streams under 12 hours, so a longer continuous broadcast needs a separate archive plan.
