You can stream a prerecorded video continuously to YouTube from Azure by running FFmpeg on an Azure virtual machine and sending its output to YouTube Live with your stream URL and stream key. Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) is another option when you need container orchestration. Azure Media Services is not a current destination: Microsoft retired it on June 30, 2024.
This is a do-it-yourself architecture, not a turnkey Azure recipe. You choose the VM or AKS setup, source-file access, encoding settings, process monitoring, and recovery plan. The available guidance does not establish a tested FFmpeg command, suitable VM size, cost estimate, or uptime guarantee.
What you need before setting it up
- A YouTube account with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the process.
- An Azure VM to host FFmpeg, or AKS if your deployment calls for container orchestration.
- FFmpeg installed and configured to read the prerecorded video and publish an encoder feed.
- A way for the Azure process to access the video, such as a file available to the host or a source it can fetch. The appropriate storage design depends on your deployment.
- The YouTube stream server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a secret: it authorizes publishing to your stream.
This workflow turns a file into a live broadcast; it is different from uploading a normal on-demand video. The current Microsoft migration guidance identifies VMs or AKS running FFmpeg as possible alternatives to retired Azure Media Services, while noting that these approaches require more setup and management.
Set up the continuous stream
-
Enable YouTube Live
In your YouTube account, enable live streaming. If this is your first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation before troubleshooting your Azure encoder.

-
Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing stream’s settings. If you schedule the broadcast, schedule it in advance and connect the encoder at broadcast time.
-
Choose and prepare the Azure host
For a straightforward single-stream deployment, an Azure VM is a reasonable starting point; that is an architectural judgment, not a Microsoft sizing recommendation. Consider AKS when you already need container orchestration. Install FFmpeg, make the video available to the host or process, and configure the encoding and publishing workflow for your file and target quality.

The cited guidance does not specify a VM size, bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, storage configuration, or exact FFmpeg command. Those settings depend on the source and delivery requirements, so validate them against your video, network, and YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than copying an unverified command.
-
Configure the YouTube destination
Copy the stream server URL and stream key from the stream’s YouTube Live settings into the FFmpeg publishing configuration. Keep the key private; do not expose it in public scripts, logs, or shared configuration. YouTube documents the encoder connection in its live-stream setup guide.

-
Start the encoder and confirm the broadcast
Start the FFmpeg process. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then select Go live when ready. Check that the preview and audio/video are behaving as expected before leaving the process to run.
-
Plan operations and archiving
Monitor FFmpeg output and the YouTube Live Control Room, and decide how you will detect a stopped process, reconnect after failures, and control the Azure host. The implementation needs its own process supervision and recovery plan; the cited guidance does not establish zero-interruption behavior or an uptime guarantee.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single automatically archived video for a continuous broadcast longer than that. If you need an archive of a longer run, plan a separately verified restart, segmentation, or recording workflow.
VM or AKS: which Azure option fits?
| Option | When it may fit | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Azure VM | A simple host for a single FFmpeg stream; the single-stream preference is an architectural inference, not a Microsoft prescription. | Install and manage FFmpeg, provide access to the source file, supervise the process, and plan recovery. Suitable VM size and cost are not established by the cited sources. |
| AKS | A deployment that already needs container orchestration. | Container and cluster operations remain part of the setup. The cited sources do not compare workload-specific capacity, cost, or reliability against a VM. |
Microsoft’s migration answer says VM or AKS with FFmpeg requires more setup and management than Azure Media Services did. Neither option removes your responsibility for the encoder process or the YouTube connection.

Do not follow retired Azure Media Services instructions
Azure Media Services retired on June 30, 2024, according to Microsoft’s 2024 end-of-support listing. Its former live-event endpoint is not a current Azure destination. An older Azure Samples FFmpeg example illustrates the historical idea of sending an encoder feed to a service, but it targets Azure Media Services. Do not use its Media Services destination URL or follow it as a current setup.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not show the encoder preview: confirm live streaming is enabled, the correct stream is selected, and the configured server URL and stream key match its settings. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- The stream stops when the Azure process exits: the YouTube broadcast depends on the encoder process continuing to publish. Inspect FFmpeg output and your VM or AKS process-management setup; design and test a restart and reconnect approach.
- The source cannot be read: verify that the file is present or reachable from the Azure host and that the process can access it. The cited guidance does not prescribe a storage service or access configuration.
- A long stream has no single automatic archive: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. For longer broadcasts, use an archive plan you have verified rather than assuming the platform will produce one complete VOD.
- You are following a tutorial that asks for an Azure Media Services endpoint: it is obsolete for a current deployment because the service retired June 30, 2024. Use a VM or AKS-based FFmpeg architecture instead.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running, StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasts.
