To keep game audio in an OBS output, capture the game’s audio as an OBS source and make sure it reaches the output you’re troubleshooting. For a local recording meant to play in a standard video player, put all required audio on track 1. A YouTube livestream archive is a separate case: OBS’s Twitch VOD Track setting is Twitch-specific, and the official YouTube encoder guidance does not explain how YouTube archives select audio tracks.
First identify which output is missing audio
“VOD” can mean different things. A YouTube livestream archive, an OBS recording saved on your computer, and a prerecorded video being replayed as a live stream are not interchangeable outputs. Start by checking the affected video: if it is a local OBS file, follow the recording-track instructions below; if it is a YouTube archive, first confirm that the game audio was captured and sent to the live output. The available YouTube encoder guidance confirms OBS can broadcast gameplay, but does not document archive audio-track selection.
Capture the game audio in OBS
Option 1: Capture audio with Game Capture or Window Capture
- In OBS Studio 30.1 or later, add or edit the Game Capture or Window Capture source for the game.
- In that source’s properties, enable Capture Audio (BETA).
- Check the OBS audio mixer while the game is making sound. Confirm the source’s meter responds and that it is not muted.
Option 2: Add an Application Audio Capture source
- Add an Application Audio Capture (BETA) source to the scene.
- Select the game’s window. OBS recommends matching by application type for most applications; matching by executable name can help if the window title changes.
- Play game audio and confirm the new source appears and responds in the mixer.
- If you use this per-application source and hear echo, open Settings → Audio and disable the global Desktop Audio source. OBS gives this as guidance for Application Audio Capture setups to prevent duplicate capture; it is not a general instruction to disable Desktop Audio in every scene.
OBS documents per-application audio capture for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. If you are on another operating system or an earlier Windows version, this specific capture method may not be available.
Make a local recording play all required audio
If the missing sound is in an OBS recording played directly in a standard video player, assign the game and every other sound you need to track 1, then enable track 1 in Settings → Output. OBS Project’s Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide, published 2023-07-14, warns that standard video players play only one audio track at a time. A recording with game audio isolated on another track may therefore sound incomplete in a basic player. Separate tracks are useful when you plan to edit the recording, but do not assume a player will mix them together.

Troubleshoot missing or doubled game audio
- The game does not appear in the mixer: Check that the correct game window is selected and that the capture source is enabled. Try Application Audio Capture on a supported Windows version, or enable Capture Audio (BETA) on a Game Capture or Window Capture source in OBS Studio 30.1 or later.
- The mixer responds, but the local recording is silent or incomplete: Check that the needed sources are assigned to track 1 and that track 1 is enabled in Settings → Output. Standard players generally play one track at a time.
- You hear an echo: If you use Application Audio Capture, check whether the same sound is also coming through global Desktop Audio. OBS advises disabling that global source for this configuration.
- Application Audio Capture does not work with this game: OBS documents a conditional workaround: route the application through VB-CABLE, then add an OBS Audio Input Capture source using the cable output. Use this only if normal application capture is incompatible with the game’s audio path.
- The local file works, but a YouTube archive does not: Verify that game audio was present in the live output. Do not treat Twitch’s VOD Track option as a YouTube setting: OBS’s VOD-track guide describes separate Twitch live and Twitch VOD feeds, not YouTube archive behavior.
