Treat “always-on” as supervised sessions rather than one guaranteed endless broadcast: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so plan a restart and check if you need to preserve replays.
Choose a setup that your laptop and connection can sustain
A spare laptop is not automatically suited to continuous gaming and encoding. The game, cooling condition, processor or graphics hardware, encoder settings, and actual upload connection all affect whether it remains stable. There is no model-specific performance result here, so test with the game and audio you intend to stream before making the broadcast public.
For a constrained setup, compare 1080p at 30 fps and 720p at 60 fps under real gameplay. YouTube’s H.264 ingest recommendations are 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 720p60; these are ingest recommendations, not a promise that a laptop can render and encode a particular game at those settings. 1080p30 is a reasonable first test if the laptop or upload connection is tight, but choose based on the result rather than assuming one setting is universally easier. YouTube’s encoder settings guide lists recommended bitrates by resolution and frame rate.
Check upload capacity, not just download speed
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused and testing outbound speed. Measure upload while the household network is in its usual busy condition, then choose a streaming bitrate that leaves that headroom. Other devices using the connection can reduce the capacity available to the stream. YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See its streaming tips for network guidance.

Prepare the channel and create an encoder stream
Before setting up the laptop, confirm the channel can stream. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to stream with an encoder; streamers must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements if the channel cannot start a broadcast.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using the encoder option. If you want to test without a public audience, set the stream to private or unlisted.
- Open the stream’s Live Control Room and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder software on the laptop. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it, publish it, or show it on stream.
- In the encoder, select RTMP or RTMPS and H.264 for a conservative starting setup. Set rate control to CBR and keyframe interval to two seconds, as in YouTube’s general encoder recommendations. Choose the output resolution and frame rate you can sustain, then enter the corresponding bitrate.
- Return to Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health, and start the broadcast from the encoder when the picture and audio look right. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Run a representative test with gameplay, game audio, microphone or other intended audio, and the home network in typical use. Watch for dropped frames, warnings, overheating, or unstable audio. Lower bitrate or resolution, or reduce frame rate, and test again if the laptop or connection struggles.
YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingest, but the recommended H.264 settings are a practical baseline when the encoder and laptop support them. Consult the current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for other formats or output targets. More advanced codec options do not compensate for an overloaded laptop or unreliable upload.

Plan session length, archives, and supervision
YouTube automatically archives encoder streams that are under 12 hours. If keeping a replay matters, plan a supervised stop and restart before reaching that limit, and verify the archive afterward. Do not treat a spare laptop setup as a guaranteed single broadcast that can run indefinitely without attention. You can review stream management details in YouTube’s live-stream management guidance.
Continuous operation also means checking that the laptop stays cool, remains connected to power, and keeps the encoder and game stable. Leave enough time to observe a test rather than judging only by whether the stream starts. If you cannot supervise restarts or recovery, a self-managed laptop may not fit the requirement.

Keep the stream eligible and respect game rights
A working live stream is not the same as a monetized one. YouTube monetization features require channel eligibility; live ads and Super Chat may be available to eligible monetized channels, while memberships are available only to some channels. See YouTube’s live monetization guidance for availability and requirements.
YouTube’s July 15, 2025 clarification says repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under its “inauthentic content” policy, including live streams, and channel-wide monetization reviews may consider it. A long stream should offer an identifiable viewer benefit—such as original gameplay with commentary, a challenge run, useful tips, or interaction—rather than relying on duration alone. Review YouTube’s monetization policies, and check the rights and streaming rules for the specific game and any music or other material you include.

Estimate laptop electricity cost in India
There is no single reliable India-wide household electricity rate for this calculation. Retail tariffs are determined by state electricity regulatory commissions, and some state governments subsidize consumer classes. Use the applicable energy charge and marginal slab on your own bill; fixed charges and adjustments may also affect the total. The Ministry of Power explains the state-level tariff responsibility in its electricity tariff information.

Average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = approximate kWh per month
Multiply the resulting kWh by the applicable energy charge. This estimates energy use, not the full bill. For a dated, localized illustration—not a national rate—the Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 tariff document lists Chandigarh domestic energy charges effective August 1, 2024: 275 paise/kWh for 0–150 kWh/month, 480 paise/kWh for 151–400 kWh/month, and 540 paise/kWh above 400 kWh/month. Use your own utility’s current bill rather than applying those Chandigarh figures elsewhere. See the CEA tariff document.
Decide whether a UPS is warranted
Power reliability varies by locality and household. The Ministry of Power reported rural power availability of 12.5 hours in FY 2015 and 22.6 hours in FY 2025; this is a national aggregate, not evidence of current supply at a particular home. Distribution and supply fall within state government and distribution utility responsibility. Consider backup only if outages are a real concern where you live. If you use a UPS, size it for the combined laptop and router load and the runtime you want, rather than selecting a capacity from a generic estimate.
