Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use two recovery layers: FFmpeg’s fifo muxer can retry certain output failures while FFmpeg is still running; a process supervisor such as systemd can relaunch FFmpeg after it exits. They address different failures, and neither proves YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast. Check the service logs and verify the feed in YouTube Live Control Room or on the watch page.
First identify what failed
A YouTube radio stream can stop at two different points: FFmpeg may remain alive while its output connection fails, or the FFmpeg process itself may exit. The fifo muxer is for selected output failures within a running FFmpeg process. A supervisor is needed to start FFmpeg again after the process exits.
- FFmpeg is still running, but output writes fail: consider FIFO output recovery.
- FFmpeg has exited: configure a process supervisor to relaunch it.
- FFmpeg appears to be running, but YouTube has no healthy feed: check the service logs and YouTube ingestion separately.
You can use both recovery layers together: FIFO can handle recoverable output interruptions, while systemd can restart FFmpeg after an eligible process exit.
Enable FFmpeg recovery for output interruptions
FFmpeg documents routing RTMP output through its fifo muxer. The following is the documented generic RTMP pattern; it is not a guarantee specific to YouTube. FIFO options are output/muxer options, so check their placement and availability in the FFmpeg build installed on your host.

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
rtmp://server/app/stream-key
Replace the input, encoding options, and RTMP destination with those appropriate to your setup. Do not expose a real stream key in a public command example, service file, log, or support post. Inspect the installed build’s FIFO options with:
ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo
Choose retry behavior deliberately
FFmpeg’s online documentation is rolling; confirm behavior against the version you run. Documented defaults include attempt_recovery off, recovery_wait_time of five seconds, max_recovery_attempts of zero (unlimited), and recover_any_error off. The example above opts into recovery and uses a one-second wait; it also opts into dropping queued packets on overflow.

| Option | Documented behavior | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
attempt_recovery |
Enables output recovery; default is false. | Enable it to use FIFO retry behavior. |
recovery_wait_time |
Delay between recovery attempts; default is five seconds. | Choose a delay suited to temporary outages rather than retrying unnecessarily rapidly. |
max_recovery_attempts |
Maximum successive failures; zero means unlimited. | Consider whether a persistent error should eventually end the process so a supervisor can restart it or an operator can investigate. |
recover_any_error |
Attempts recovery regardless of error type; default is false. Some errors are usually permanent. | Do not assume retrying every error is safe or useful. |
drop_pkts_on_overflow |
Drops queued packets instead of blocking when the queue fills. | Processing may continue, but the output can have omissions. Decide whether that trade-off is acceptable for your radio stream. |
restart_with_keyframe |
Can wait for a keyframe after recovery; default is false. | Evaluate this video-specific option with the actual stream; it is not a process supervisor. |
Restart FFmpeg after it exits with systemd
On a Linux host using systemd, configure the service manager to run FFmpeg in the foreground and restart it after eligible failures. A common starting pattern uses Restart=on-failure with a deliberate RestartSec= delay. Exact unit directives, restart limits, permissions, environment, and command depend on the host and systemd version; verify them against the target machine’s installed documentation before relying on the service.
Keep the supervised process observable
- Run FFmpeg in the foreground so systemd tracks the encoder process itself.
- Use the service manager’s logs to understand why FFmpeg stopped before allowing repeated retries to continue.
- Correct persistent causes—such as an invalid input, permissions, bad arguments, an incorrect stream key, or connectivity problems—instead of treating every exit as temporary.
- Be cautious with wrapper scripts or commands that fork: they can make the service’s reported state harder to interpret.
These are operational considerations, not a complete, universally valid systemd unit. A restart policy does not fix a bad input, invalid credentials, or an unavailable network.

Check that YouTube has recovered too
A running FFmpeg process only tells you that the process is alive. After a retry or restart, verify that YouTube is receiving the feed and that the expected broadcast is accessible. Use Live Control Room to preview and monitor the stream, then check the public watch page when appropriate. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key; if YouTube reports a start error, check the key and update the encoder with the current one if needed.
Verify ingestion settings when the process runs but the feed does not
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. Its encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; it also specifies CBR bitrate encoding. These are ingestion settings to check when a restarted encoder does not produce the expected feed. They do not restart FFmpeg or supervise process crashes.

YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo AAC audio. Treat that as an encoder setting, not as a recovery mechanism. Test and preview a broadcast before relying on it, and monitor it after recovery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect the stream key
YouTube’s stream key is the value entered into the encoder. Keep it out of publicly visible service files, command logs, and support posts; store it with permissions appropriate to the host. YouTube documents resetting a key if it is compromised. If you reset it, update the encoder’s configured value as well.

Troubleshoot common recovery failures
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg remains alive but output does not return. | FIFO recovery may not be enabled, the error may not be recoverable, or the destination may remain unavailable. | Check the FFmpeg logs and installed FIFO options. Confirm attempt_recovery is enabled and review the retry wait and attempt limit; correct persistent output or connectivity errors. |
| FFmpeg exits and stays down. | The supervisor may not be managing the process, or its restart policy may not apply to that exit. | Check systemd service state and logs, then verify the unit’s restart policy and service command on that host. |
| The service repeatedly restarts. | A persistent input, permission, argument, stream-key, or network problem may be causing each run to fail. | Use the logs to fix the underlying error; do not rely on an endless restart loop as the repair. |
| FFmpeg is running, but YouTube preview or the watch page is not healthy. | Process status does not establish successful YouTube ingestion. | Check Live Control Room, the server URL and key, and applicable encoder settings such as RTMPS, CBR, and keyframe interval. |
| YouTube reports a stream start error after a key change. | The encoder may still be using an old or incorrect key. | Confirm the current key in YouTube and update the encoder configuration. Reset a compromised key and replace it wherever the encoder uses it. |
| The stream recovers with gaps or missing packets. | drop_pkts_on_overflow may be allowing encoding to continue by omitting queued packets. |
Decide whether packet loss is preferable to a stalled encoder; adjust the overflow trade-off for the stream’s continuity needs. |
