Set your live encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. At 30 fps, that means one keyframe every 60 frames. YouTube’s guidance explains why the setting matters for buffering and transcoding, but it does not explain why exactly two seconds was chosen.
What keyframe interval should you use?
For a live stream sent to YouTube, use a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Recommended 2 seconds” and “Do not exceed 4 seconds.” YouTube’s live encoder settings list this alongside its video encoding requirements.
A keyframe interval is a duration, not a fixed number of frames. Convert the duration using the stream’s frame rate:
| Frame rate | Frames per 2-second interval |
|---|---|
| 30 fps | 60 frames (YouTube’s example) |
| 60 fps | 120 frames (calculated from the frame rate) |
If you change frame rate, adjust the frame-count interval to keep the duration at two seconds. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance specifically says that at 30 fps keyframes should arrive every two seconds, or 60 frames, and that the frequency must change when the frame rate changes. - 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why does YouTube recommend two seconds?
Keyframes that arrive too infrequently can cause buffering
YouTube identifies keyframes arriving too infrequently as a possible cause of buffering. Regular keyframes therefore matter to the stream’s ingest and playback processing; using YouTube’s recommended interval helps avoid the too-infrequent condition described in its troubleshooting guidance.
A closed GOP supports transcoding
A GOP, or group of pictures, is a sequence of frames. YouTube says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. Some encoders offer GOP controls labeled “Open” and “Closed”; if yours does, choose Closed. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers on different devices and network conditions, making its GOP requirement relevant to that processing.

Does that mean a shorter interval is better?
No. YouTube’s troubleshooting page warns that a GOP that is too small can reduce image quality. The guidance is not “make keyframes as frequent as possible”: keep the interval at the recommended two seconds, stay within the four-second ceiling, and use a closed GOP. YouTube’s public instructions do not establish two seconds as a uniquely optimal value or provide an engineering derivation for choosing that exact interval.
Is the keyframe interval the same as live latency?
No. YouTube defines live latency as the delay between capture at the encoder or camera and the stream appearing to viewers. It notes that lower latency may result in more playback buffering. The two-second keyframe recommendation is not a promise of two-second end-to-end latency; the cited guidance does not say that the interval alone determines how quickly viewers see the stream. Where to set it and what to check
The control’s name and location vary by encoder, so look for “keyframe interval,” “keyframe frequency,” or a GOP-size setting in its video or streaming output settings. Use the encoder’s stream profile and frame rate that you intend to send to YouTube, then check these values before going live:
- Keyframe frequency: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame-count equivalent: 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps.
- GOP structure: Closed, if the encoder exposes an Open/Closed choice.
- After changing frame rate, recalculate the frame-count interval rather than retaining the old frame count.
Common keyframe and GOP problems
Viewers report buffering
Check whether keyframes are arriving too infrequently. Set the interval to two seconds and confirm the frame-count conversion matches the stream’s actual frame rate.

YouTube flags GOP or keyframe frequency
Verify the interval is within YouTube’s two-second recommendation and four-second maximum, and set the GOP to Closed if that option is available. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance identifies both infrequent keyframes and GOP configuration as relevant checks.
Image quality falls after making the interval very short
Restore the recommended two-second interval. YouTube warns that a GOP that is too small can reduce image quality, so shortening the interval further is not a general fix.
